- "Others, like Senator R'shinnos Sh'neel (Genassa), are reserving judgment until further developments."
- ―HoloNet News report[6]
Genassa was aMid Rimagriworld located in theM'shinni sector. It was thehomeworld of thesentientM'shinnspecies, which evolved from ahumanoid precursor species that had entered a symbiotic relationship with a localplant species. The M'shinni eventuallycolonizedGenassa's moon and the rest of theGenassa system before going on to develophyperdrive and settleworlds in otherstar systems at some point by3966 BBY. By the time of theClone Warsmillennia later, Genassa had become a member world of theGalactic Republic, and it subsequently became incorporated into the territories of theGalactic Empire and theNew Republic.
Description[]
Genassa was a terrestrial[4]planet[7] located in theGenassa system, a part of theM'shinni sector[1] in theNew Territories portion of[2] theMid Rim.[1] It wasorbited by alarge moon. At some point, the planet'sflora included aplant species that eventually—long before theGalactic Civil War between theGalactic Empire and theRebel Alliance—entered into a symbiotic relationship with aspecies ofhumanoid, which ultimately went extinct, evolving into the plant-covered,sentientM'shinnspecies.[3]
History[]
Joining the Republic[]

Genassa was the homeworld of the M'shinn species.
At some point, population pressures on Genassa forced thenative M'shinn species tocolonize outerspace, beginning with the construction oforbital biospheres and then proceeding with the settlement of Genassa'smoon and theterraforming of the rest of the Genassasystem's planets. Eventually,[3] at some point by3966 BBY,[8] the M'shinni developedhyperdrives, which allowed them to colonize hundreds of worlds in the M'shinnisector.[3]
Space surrounding Genassa was explored by theGalactic Republic between3000 BBY and1000 BBY,[2] and after being encountered by the Republic, the M'shinni quickly embraced that government,[3] with their homeworld being situated within the borders of the Republic by the time of theClone Wars.[2] By thedate13:3:21,SenatorR'shinnos Sh'neel represented Genassa in the Republic'sSenate,[6] and during the first campaigns of the Clone Wars in 22BBY, theNinth Army of the Republic was tasked with engaging themilitary forces of theConfederacy of Independent Systems in Genassa's vicinity.[5]
Empire and beyond[]
The planet was incorporated into the territory of the Galactic Empire by17 BBY.[5] During the Galactic Civil War between the Empire and the Rebel Alliance, thepirate group known as theVeiled Sorority planned to attack aconvoy of the criminal organization known as theZann Consortium as part of a feud between the two groups. The ambush was supposed to take place in an isolated region of space between Genassa and theBright Jewel sector planetOrd Mantell, wherestarships frequently emerged fromhyperspace fornavigational calculations.[4]
However, a group of individuals hired by the Zann Consortium to track down and eliminate the leader of the Veiled Sorority, thePirate Queen, managed to obtain information about the planned attack and its coordinates. They relayed that information to the Zann Consortium, which subsequently set up anambush of its own there.[4]
By13 ABY, Genassa had become a part of the Empire's eventual successor state, theNew Republic.[5]Fourteen years later, the Genassa system had been conquered by theextragalacticYuuzhan Vong species as part of itsinvasion ofthe galaxy. It remained under the invaders' control until29 ABY.[2]
Inhabitants[]
Main article:M'shinn
Genassa was anagriworld[4] that was the homeworld of the sentient M'shinn species. The M'shinni society was organized around families known asRootlines, with each M'shinni-controlled world having aCouncil of the Wise that consisted of the eldest member of each Rootline on that world. The Councils of the Wise enforced ancient land ownership rules and concerned themselves with how the M'shinni society interacted with the Galactic Empire.[3] Around25 ABY, the population of the Genassa system numbered between one and ten billion.[2]
Behind the scenes[]

A number of maps of the galaxy published in severalStar Wars sources placed Genassa on the Celanon Spur.
Genassa was first mentioned in the1995West End Games'Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game sourcebookGalaxy Guide 12: Aliens — Enemies and Allies, in an entry authored byLisa Smedman.[3] The2009 reference bookThe Essential Atlas byDaniel Wallace andJason Fry placed the Genassa system, and therefore the planet itself, in grid square M-7. In the book, a number ofgalactic maps depict Genassa between theBright Jewel andOttega systems on theCelanon Spurhyperspace route.[2] That placement was later repeated in several maps in other sources.[5][9][10][11][12][13]
However, in a map ofThe Essential Atlas focusing on Genassa's galactic region, the Mid Rim, itsstar system is instead placed a relatively short distance off that segment of the Celanon Spur[2]—a placement that was also repeated in theStarWars.comOnline Companion to the book[14] as well as in a smaller-scale map in Jason Fry andPaul R. Urquhart's2012 reference bookThe Essential Guide to Warfare focusing on Genassa's galactic neighborhood. This article assumes that the placement originating from these latter, more specific maps is correct.[5]

SinceThe Essential Guide to Warfare dates the latter event to3966 BBY, the M'shinni must have therefore acquired interstellar travel ability at some point by that date.
