"The Force is not fire. It cannot be passed from one user's lit torch to another's, and another's until an entire hemisphere is illuminated with a blaze of a million lights."
―From the writings ofDarth Bane[1]

Fire was the visible, highly exothermic reaction between combustible fuel andoxygen at extremely high temperatures. It usually appeared as orange or yellow glowing 'tongues' of erratically rising gas, but could be othercolors depending on the chemical being burned and the completeness of the combustion. While its intense heat could cause physical damage, fire was an important part of many cultures and religions from ancient to modern times.

Practical uses[]

In archaic cultures, fire was often maintained for heating and cooking. Specific structures calledfireplaces were often found in old houses andcastles likeChâteau Malreaux, but also in more modern housings. WhenPrincessLeia Organa was imprisoned onBakura in5 ABY, her room was equipped with a fireplace.[3] TheWookiees, who had managed to balance nature and technology in their culture, still used fireplaces at the time of theGalactic Civil War.[4]

When establishing a campsite, a fire (then known as campfire) was often lit for warmth and psychological sense of security. In1000 BBY, before theirfinal battle, the Sith established a camp onRuusan with many cooking fires around the tents.[5] Similarly, when he first came toDathomir,Luke Skywalker saw a campfire constructed by theWitches of Dathomir. Later on Dathomir, Han Solo used his blaster to light a small campfire when the group he was travelling with found a location to rest and make camp for the night.[6]

Besides domestic uses, fire was also used in deliberately harmful ways. A vast array of weapons known asflamethrowers projected streams of burning gas or flammable liquid. During theClone Wars, a squad ofspecializedclone troopers were equipped with massiveBT X-42 flamethrowers as well as other incendiary weapons.[7] Years later, under the height of theGalactic Empire, theIncinerator stormtroopers would burn their enemies to death.[8] Around3.5 ABY, theSanyassan Marauders who lived on the forestmoon ofEndor made use of fire cannon to destroy thehut of theWarrick, a family of peacefulEwoks.[9] Among theSith, the arcane and deadlyForce power known asConvection also allowed its user to modify the heat of their own skin and set their opponent's robes on fire through direct contact.[1] Another fire based Force Power, while rare, waspyrokinesis which was used by both Sith and Jedi.[10][11]

Fire was also often used as a means to destroy dead bodies through a process known ascremation, which was often performed at funerals. Individuals whose bodies were cremated with fire includedYarael Poof,[12]Qui-Gon Jinn,[13] and a group of Jawas who were killed by Imperial Stormtroopers on Tatooine.[14]

In theSith culture, fire was often used to symbolize the vivid hate or passion.LordKopecz once used fire as a symbol for the power of thedark side of the Force, burning like anger with the heat of passion and emotion.[5] In other cases, fire was considered a purifying substance.Rajivari's apprentices were known to be flawed, but once they "walked the fire", they were considered to be pure. Sacrificing oneself to the flames was considered a demonstration of resolve and strength.[15] On the contrary, theYuuzhan Vong considered fire to be an abomination.[16]

Sometimes, large campfires known as "bonfires" would be built as part of a celebration. TheWhiphids fromToola used to roast the remains ofsnow demons, and the young ones danced around them while the elders played the claw harps.[6]
