After theGalactic Republic became theGalactic Empire, theJedi Order'stemple became the palace ofGalactic EmperorSheev Palpatine. FollowingEmperor Palpatine'sdeath in theBattle of Endor, the Empire fought to remain in control of the Federal District during acivil war between theImperial government and theCoruscanti that supported theNew Republic.
Description[]

The Avenue of the Core Founders and the Galactic Senate Building were located in the Federal District of Coruscant.
Under theGalactic Republic, theplanetCoruscant's centralgovernment district was located[1] in the northern hemisphere[8] and generally referred to as the Federal District,[1] Senate District, or Legislative District.[12] It would also be known as the Military District during theClone Wars.[13] Informally, however, the Federal District was referred to byCoruscanti as the "Core of Coruscant" or "Core Square."[5] The Federal District was the focal point of theSenate Building that served as themeeting place of theGalactic Senate. In front of the Senate Building was theSenate Plaza, whoseAvenue of the Core Founders bore statues dedicated to the founding members of the Republic. Located nearby was theSenate Office Building, where theSupreme Chancellor maintained asuite of offices,500 Republica, a prestigious and exclusive residential tower whereSheev Palpatine maintained anapartment during his service assenator ofNaboo, and theJedi Temple, which served as the home of theJedi Order.[1]

The Imperial Palace, formerly known as the Jedi Temple, was the focal point of the Federal District under the Galactic Empire.
TheRepublic Judiciary Central Detention Center, the Republic's primaryincarceration facility on the planet, was also one of many buildings located in the district.[13] With thefall of the Republic and theestablishment of theGalactic Empire, theJedi Temple was converted into the Imperial Palace.[1] The area surrounding the formerJedi Temple became a focal point of the so-called "supreme triangle" of the newly-christened Imperial Palace, together with theNaval Intelligence Agency'sheadquarters and theCOMPNOR arcology[3] that housed theCentral Office of theImperial Security Bureau.[4] It was also within the Federal District that theImperial Military constructed acombined headquarters for theImperial Army and theImperial Navy.[5] The district was covered with toweringskyscrapers and its skies were kept clear via weather control.[3]
History[]

The bombing of Coruscant's central power distribution grid resulted in blackouts across the Federal District.
In thedays of the Republic, the term "Senate District" was synonymous with the business and power of thegalactic government.[3] TheClone Wars brought about great changes to the district, as it saw a massive build-up of new structures to house the increase in government agencies that were created in support of the Republic's war effort.[12] In21 BBY,[14][15] the Senate District was the site of aterroristbombing[16] and arampage by aZillo Beast that theGrand Army of the Republiccaptured on the planetMalastare.[17]
GeneralGrievous and his strike team landed in the Federal District during theBattle of Coruscant.[18] During the execution ofOrder 66, the501st Legionsecured the Jedi Temple under the command of the newly-christenedSith LordDarth Vader.[19] TheDark Lord of the SithDarth Sidious, publicly known asGalactic Emperor Sheev Palpatine, subsequently confiscated the Temple and refurbished the structure as the Imperial Palace, the seat of theGalactic Empire.[1] Along with other government structures that were constructed around it, the palace became the focal point of the Federal District as part of the "supreme triangle."[3]

The death of Emperor Palpatine was celebrated across the Federal District by the people of Coruscant.
After the death of Emperor Palpatine at theBattle of Endor in4 ABY,[20] the turning point of theGalactic Civil War between the Empire and theAlliance to Restore the Republic, theGrand VizierMas Amedda and the Imperial Security Bureau seized control of Coruscant in an effort to put down therevolution that had erupted on the planet.[21] As the Empire was driven back across the galaxy by theNew Republic, Amedda was placed under house arrest by order ofGallius Rax, the self-styledCounselor to the Empire, while Imperial forces continued to lose ground and struggled to hold onto the upper levels of the Federal District. With the defeat of theImperial remnants at theBattle of Jakku, Amedda signed theGalactic Concordance, formally marking thesurrender of the Galactic Empire and replacing theImperial government on Coruscant with aprovisional government that was overseen by the New Republic.[11]
Behind the scenes[]
Star Wars: Build the Millennium Falcon 67 identifies theRepublic Judiciary Central Detention Center as sitting within the Military District of Coruscant.[13]The High Republic: Cataclysm later stated that the Central Detention Center was part of the Federal District.[8] Therefore, this article assumes "Military District" to be an alternative name for the Federal District.
