Exile was a form of punishment or penance used by numerous beings acrossthe galaxy in which the punished were banished from society. The termhiding referred to those who lived in exile, though not as a form of punishment.

During theHigh Republic Era,MotherAniseya'scoven has been forced into exile as thewitches were hunted and persecuted to the brink of extinction.[3]

At the end of theMandalorian Civil War, those who continued to embrace the Mandalorian warrior culture were exiled to themoon ofConcordia. Concordia's governor,Pre Vizsla ofClan Vizsla, would reorganize these Mandalorians intoDeath Watch with the intent of retaking Mandalore from theNew Mandalorians.[4]

After his defeat at the hands ofObi-Wan Kenobi during theBattle of Naboo,[5] theSith LordDarth Maul was abandoned and entered exile[2] on the junk world ofLotho Minor until his brotherSavage Opress discovered and rescued him.[6] Maul would be brought toDathomir, whereMotherTalzin restored his sanity as well as giving her son new cybernetic legs.[7] Soon after, he and his brother would ally themselves with Vizsla and the exiled warriors of Death Watch.[8]

After hisduel withDarth Vader onMustafar,Obi-Wan Kenobi, entered self-imposed exile onTatooine to watch over and protect Vader's secret son,Luke.[1] Many Jedi who survivedOrder 66 and theGreat Jedi Purge went into exile to escape theGalactic Empire and theirInquisitors.[9]

TheChiss known asThrawn claimed to have been exiled by his own people, but secretly engineered matters with their aid to create the appearance of this, in order to gain acceptance into and study the Galactic Empire. When questioned by the Imperials as to his background, Thrawn described himself using theSy Bisti term for "exiled": "Xishu azwane."[10] Later, during theLiberation of Lothal in1 BBY, Thrawn was banished into a forced exile on the extragalactic planet ofPeridea whenJedi PadawanEzra Bridger summoned a pod ofpurrgil to aid the rebel effort. The purrgil dragged both Thrawn and Bridger, along with Thrawn's Destroyer, theChimaera, and crew toanother galaxy.[11] By9 ABY,Thrawn's forces, as well as Bridger, wouldescape Peridea thanks to the efforts ofMorgan Elsbeth.[12]

After his failure to train a new generation of Jedi, Luke Skywalker went into self-exile on the planetAhch-To,[13]shutting himself off from the Force and intending to spend his last days marooned and alone.[14]A year later, his apprenticeRey intended to replicate the feat, but was convinced by theForce spirit of her master to instead continue thefight against theFirst Order.[15]

Following hisdeath atEndor,Galactic EmperorDarth Sidious was secretly resurrected in aclone body onExegol,[16] where he remained in exile. In exile[17] on Exegol, Sidious was attended to bySith loyalists, who toiled endlessly to keep their venerated master alive by coupling theirgeneticengineering[16] technology with the occult of thedark side of the Force,[18] while the deposedEmperor built theSith cult into amilitary force ofsoldiers and workers.[17]
