Plot summary[]
Shortly after the declaration of theGalactic Empire,EmperorPalpatine utilized thousands of workers to build a fortress onByss. Byss was adark side conduit, able to give its inhabitants great power in usingthe Force. Along with the power of Byss, Palpatine slowly fed on the life energy of his workers, to lengthen his own life.
Palpatine andDarth Vader brought a number of capturedAgricultural Corps survivors and other Force adepts to the planet in order to train them into powerful servants. Vader was ordered to select worthy pupils, and dispose of the rest.
Vader initially selected four of the best pupils, aJedi namedAntinnis Tremayne among them. The others included:Gwellib Ap-Llewff—who later became a dark side adept in service on Byss,Lanu Pasiq, andHalmere—who, like Tremayne, became aHigh Inquisitor.
Vader trained them personally in his palace in theImperial City.
The main charactersDrake Lo'gaan,Ekria andZonder are all Jedipadawans that have by, some miracle not specified, managed to escape theGreat Jedi Purge. They are hiding in the lower levels ofCoruscant hoping to escape the notice of theSith.
Drake is first seen gambling in theUscru District to make some credits. However theNalle triplets realized that he was underage and called in thestormtroopers to have him removed. Drake, afraid of being captured, made a daring escape with the help of his friends Zonder and Ekria.
Inside their small apartment the three friends had an argument about the moral wrongs of gambling and Ekria persuaded Drake to get a legitimate job.
Drake decided to joinCOMPNOR as they were launching a special recruitment campaign for theirSAGroup. He applied under the alias "Jodd Sonta". While at the launch party Drake heard a speech by Inquisitor Tremayne. Unfortunately Tremayne sensed his presence in the Force and ordered a full background check on everyone present in at the party.
Tremayne informed Darth Vader of the presence of Jedi on Coruscant at his training session. Tremayne talked to Vader as he fought off the other three apprentices. Unfortunately Vader became angry with his lack of concentration. Tremayne immediately succeeded in disarming the other Force-users using his powerful anger.
Meanwhile Drake managed to get a job as a security guard at a space port on Coruscant. While on duty, he met a girl namedOnnelly Praji who was boarding a transport to Byss. After discovering that the voyage will be one-way for the non-human passengers, he and Ekria armed themselves and rushed to rescue Zonder from certain death.
Having boarded the vessel, Ekria and Drake found Zonder, convincing him (and a few others) to leave before it's too late. Tremayne and two other Inquisitors arrived on the scene, and the former Padawans managed to escape with aid from the aliens they sought to liberate.
