Biology and appearance[]

Many female Devaronians, likeTress Hacnua, had vestigial horns only.
Hailing from theplanetDevaron, the Devaronians were aspecies ofsentienthumanoids, characterized by twolegs, a torso, a single head, two arms with hands, fingers, and an opposable thumb.[1] The Devaronian head featured anose, amouth filled with pointedteeth, and two forward-facingeyes,[8] which notably came in shades of black,[10] blue,[11] brown,[12] dark brown,[6] green,[4] pink,[5]red,[8] and yellow.[9] Both sides of the face were flanked by two pointedears that stuck out slightly.[8]
The species had twosexes, male and female, which were primarily dimorphic. Many males had short horns growing from the top of their heads, while most females were mostly hornless[8] with small vestigial bumps on their foreheads[2] along with a full head ofhair.[9]. However, some females, such as thecrime lordIsa Durand,[15] and others[16] possessed full sets of horns as well.[15] Some female Devaronians possessed a thin coat of gray fur on their body.[17] Male Devaronians were typically bald— however, some of them grew sideburns[1] as well as beards.[3]
Devaronians had blackblood, and weresilver-based due to the unique blood filtration and cleansing system of the species. Processed through twolivers, their bodies were constantly cleansed of toxins and carcinogens which allowed them to be highly resistant topoison and consumefoods toxic to other species. To this end, sulfur was used as astimulant on Devaron to enhance speed and strength, because inhaling it caused the substance to enter the bloodstream rapidly. Their livers struggled to eliminate sulfur from their system, meaning that long-term use could be dangerous.[2] Their skin was also immune tofire and extremely high temperatures.[11][18]
Society and culture[]

Devaronians lived under a matriarchal government on theirhomeworld; though males were not prohibited from holding positions of power, few desired to do so. The biological dimorphism of the species carried over into their culture, wherein females tended to be more settled and serious minded, while males longed to wander the stars. Devaronian males were extremely dedicated to their families despite their wanderlust, and were known to send their earnings they accumulated abroad back to their families to support them.[2]
Force-sensitivity was found in higher frequencies among Devaronians than in other species. Despite this, no strongForce-based tradition emerged on Devaron or among their colonies. TheJedi Order established theTemple of Eedit on Devaron to train the Forcefulchildren there, with females making up the larger percentage of students as males desired to travel more than theJedi culture permitted.[2]
Devaronians in the galaxy[]

Developinghyperdrive technology on Devaron independently from extraterrestrial assistance, the Devaronians had explored and interacted withthe galaxy before theGalactic Republic ever made contact with their region ofspace. To this end, Devaronians were a common sight across the galaxy for tens ofmillennia before theClone Wars.[2]
Devaronians have become increasingly prominent in the less civilized portions of theOuter Rim over the last few decades, in part because of the Empire's distrust ofaliens of all sorts. Under thereign of theGalactic Empire, a Devaronian namedCikatro Vizago led theBroken Horn Syndicate, aLothal-based criminal organization. Thecrew of thestarshipGhost occasionally relied on Vizago for funding and information.[8]Roland Durand was a Devaronian male criminal who forcefully took overCiddarin Scaleback's Parlor, onOrd Mantell. Another Devaronian namedYelkin worked as aminer on thethorilide mines ofCynda.[19] Shortly before theBattle of Yavin,[6] a red-skinned male Devaronian namedKardue'sai'Malloc[20] was present inthe cantina ofMos Eisley thedayObi-Wan Kenobi andLuke Skywalker metHan Solo andChewbacca.[6] During3 ABY,[21] the female Devaronian namedTorro Sbazzle worked as theExecutive Chef ofCloud City.[18] During theNew Republic Era, a Devaronian namedBurg operated as amercenary.[11]
Behind the scenes[]
The devil-faced Devaronians first appeared inStar Wars: Episode IVA New Hope, in which one of them was seen inChalmun's Cantina. The Devaronian patron, whose mask was created byRick Baker, was added to the scene during the additional photography that filled out the cantina booths with exotic aliens.[22]
The2014 reference bookStar Wars Rebels: The Visual Guide, written byAdam Bray, specifies that male Devaronians have horns while females are hornless.[8] However, the2015mobile gameStar Wars: Uprising then depicted female Devaronians with horns.[16] The Devaronian femaleIsa Durand was depicted with horns in "Paths Unknown," the second episode of theStar Wars: The Bad Batch'sthird season,[15] which premiered onFebruary 21,2024.[23] This article assumes that the precedent of all Devaronians with horns automatically being male, as established inStar Wars Rebels: The Visual Guide, has since beenretconned.[8]
