Prelude[]
Anaxes, a terrestrialplanet home toimportant shipyards,[5] had previously been threatened with destruction during theClone Wars.[6] In19 BBY,[7] the finalyear of the conflict between theGalactic Republic and theConfederacy of Independent Systems,[8] the Separatists launched anattack on Anaxes led byAdmiralTrench. TheSeparatist forces initially had the upper hand due to having gained access to a secret, highly-effectiveRepublic strategy algorithm[5] from a capturedARC trooper,Echo.[6]
AfterJedi GeneralAnakin Skywalker,Clone CaptainRex andClone Force 99rescued Echo,[9] the Republic launched a counterattack against the Separatists. When it became clear thebattle droids were being driven back, Trench activated his backup plan: "total annihilation" in the form of abomb hidden in theassembly complex which was powerful enough to destroy most of the planet. With the help of Skywalker and Echo,JediGeneralMace Windu was able to disarm the bomb, and Skywalkerkilled Trench and blew up hisflagship,Invulnerable, ending the threat theHarch had posed.[6] However, aSeparatist stronghold still remained on the planet.[4]
The Clone Wars ended later that year[8] with thereorganization of the Republic into theGalactic Empire and thedestruction of theJedi Order, which was falsely accused oftreason byDark Lord of the SithDarth Sidious, publiclySupreme Chancellor andGalactic Emperor Palpatine. The newEmperor promised to bring about a new era of "peace" forthe galaxy.[10]
The destruction[]
Around the end of the Clone Wars,[2] Anaxes was destroyed in a cataclysmic event.[3] All that remained of the planet was anasteroid belt.[1]Fort Anaxes, aRepublic Military base which had been the Republic's headquarters during the Battle of Anaxes, miraculously survived the cataclysm on a newplanetoid[3] which was later designatedPM-1203.[11] The Separatist stronghold also survived on the planetoidPM-6986. It was theorized that the cataclysm had been caused by a shipyard mainreactor failing and igniting ahypermatter stockpile.[4]
Aftermath[]
Fort Anaxes was abandoned for military purposes after the cataclysm and became afuel depot,[3] which was also occasionally used bysmugglers or rebels such as theSpectres for supply drops.[1]
Behind the scenes[]
The destruction of Anaxes was first mentioned in Fort Anaxes'StarWars.comDatabank entry, which went online[3] after the airing of theStar Wars Rebelsfirst season episode "Out of Darkness," the first appearance of the fort itself.[1]
Ultimate Star Wars, New Edition[12] andDawn of Rebellion state that the destruction of Anaxes happened within the Clone Wars.[4] However the Databank entry of Fort Anaxes[3] andStar Wars Helmet Collection 2 place the event after the end of the Clone Wars.[13]
