- "Even advanced species like the Chiss had found a way to make icy planets into homes."
- ―An artist, in his journal[6]
Csilla (pronounced /ˈt͡ʃiːlə/) was afrigid,ice-lockedplanet in theUnknown Regions. It was thehomeworld of thesentient,near-humanChissspecies and thecapital world of theChiss Ascendancy. Though largely unknown to the widergalaxy during theage of the Galactic Empire, exploratory missions to the Unknown Regions conductedyears later revealed Csilla and other worlds that could be reached through cautioushyperspace jumps.
Description[]
Csilla was acold,ice-lockedplanet[3] located in theCsilla system[2] of theUnknown Regions, at the coordinates F-8[1] on theStandard Galactic Grid.[7] Its capital was thecity ofCsaplar, which was mostly located underground.[2]
Visitors to Csilla, whether Chiss oralien, were led to believe that the planet remained vibrantly populated despite its shift to much colder weather. The parts of Csilla near theCsaplar spaceport were bustling, with hotels, entertainment venues, merchants, diplomats, government and military business nearby. However, most of the above-ground parts of Csaplar and other cities were devoid of inhabitants and made to simply look lively to create the appearance of a well-populated world.[2]
At the twilight of theClone Wars, approximately 60–70 million Chiss still lived on Csilla. The vast majority of them lived in illuminated and heated underground caves which could even have forests, lakes, mountains, and convincing artificial sunlight within them. To create the façade of 8 billion inhabitants on Csilla, some of those who lived underground were selected on a rotating basis to spend a limited amount of time on the surface, to appear as if they lived there.[2]
History[]
A great war[]
- «But then, centuries later, came an invasion by a merciless enemy. Our outer worlds were overrun and the Defense Force pushed back until only Csilla remained unconquered. The enemy gathered all its ships and armies, preparing for what is now known as the Final Assault on Csilla. We knew there was no way we could stand against them, and we knew that if we lost the Chiss faced extinction.»
- ―Lamiov, to Thrass and Thrawn[5]
Csilla was inhabited by theChiss for thousands ofyears. Approximately 1000 years before theClone Wars,[2] during theclimax of a greatwar fought between the Chiss Ascendancy and anenemy, the Chiss were forced back to Csilla. Despite their earlier losses, the Chiss Ascendancy were forced to use an ancient alien weapon known as theStarflash. The sacrifice of all four sons of theMitthPatriarchThomoro destroyed the entire enemy force, saving the Ascendancy from being conquered and securing the Mitth a rank among theNine Ruling Families. However, the weapon also affectedCsilla's sun, causing it to cool and make the surface of the planet uninhabitable.[5]
Climate change[]
Because of the change intemperature, a vast majority of the planet's four billion residents moved offworld to the planetsRentor,Avidich andSarvchi. Those who remained moved underground. At the time of the Clone Wars, the official records stated that Csilla had a population of eight billion, but the actual population at this time was around sixty to seventy million. To maintain the illusion of a still-thriving planet, several hundred Chiss citizens were stationed nearCsaplar's spaceports andtube cars were continually run across the empty city.[2]
Csilla was openly attacked in 19 BBY[8]. Three unknown enemy capital ships emerged fromhyperspace and attacked the orbital defense platforms. The defenders, although shocked momentarily, began firing within a minute and soon destroyed all three of the ships and all wreckage so as to not damage the planet. All leadership on the planet went to underground bunkers and stayed there for several hours to see if there were any follow-up attacks.[2]
Imperial Era[]

Joining the ranks of the Empire in the name of supporting the Chiss, Thrawn attempted to withhold the location of his people's territories from the Galactic Emperor, something he noticed.
The Chiss and their home planet were largely unknown in other regions ofthe galaxy. Consequently, when anImperial scouting party led byCaptainVoss Parck encountered the supposedlyexiled ChissThrawn[9] in circa15 BBY,[10] Parck instructedcadetEli Vanto to learn anything he could from thealien about his species and homeworld.[9] In secret, Thrawn's motives were to see if the Empire would be a suitable ally for theChiss–Grysk conflict or if it could be weakened from within to be a more suitable target. Upon meetingGalactic EmperorSheev Palpatine, however, Thrawn would find himself with a new opportunity and entered the ranks of theImperial Navy.[11]
As continued his career in the Imperial Navy and became an advisor on the mapping of the Unknown Regions for Palpatine, Thrawn—who would arise to the rank ofGrand Admiral[9] in2 BBY[12]—would withhold the location of Chiss planets and bases from the Emperor, something Palpatine noticed but claimed did not annoy him.[9] In truth, however, Palpatine—when confronted by Thrawn about the comingGrysk Hegemony[11] in1 BBY[12]—decided the best defense would be the annex the Chiss territories into his Empire. He intended to force Thrawn to help him in his conquest,[11] but the efforts of the Jedi-in-trainingEzra Bridger during theBattle of Lothal took Thrawn out of galactic affairs[13] for years to come,[14] ruining Palpatine's plans.[11]
In4 ABY,[15] theForce spirit of theJediObi-Wan Kenobi told his apprenticeLuke Skywalker the fate of Csilla, and many other planets, would rely on him confronting theSith LordDarth Vader in theBattle of Endor.[16] Sometime after theBattle of Crait[17] in34 ABY,[18] thepirateHondo Ohnaka included Csilla in thegalactic map of his book named theGalactic Explorer's Guide.[17] Although dangeroushyperspace anomalies limitedexploration of the Unknown Regions, the occasional exploratory missions of the region conducted[19] by35 ABY[20] revealed some navigable worlds—including Csilla,Ilum, andRakata Prime—that could be reached through careful hyperspace jumps.[19]
Inhabitants[]
A part of theChiss Ascendancy,[2] Csilla was thehomeworld of thesentientChissspecies.[6]
At some point, anartist traveled around the galaxy and wrote about the Chiss and their ability to settle into icy planets inhis journal. The document was later restored and published by theGraf Archive[6] sometime no earlier than 34 ABY[21] and included a mention of Csilla as the Chiss homeworld.[6]
