Throughout naval history, it was used for some of the largest and most commonwarships in a given fleet, but alternate designations likeStar Cruiser was also applied, like in thenavy of theGalactic Empire[4] and theRebel Alliance.[5] Ships that were designated with other names were also often referred to as cruisers.[6][7]

The cruiser designation for warships second only tobattleships was used to a certain extent by theTrade Federation,[8] theConfederacy of Independent Systems[6] and theGalactic Empire (as Star Cruisers).[4] TheRebel Alliance often used the Star Cruiser term to describe its heaviestMon Calamari warships, which served as either cruisers or battleships.[9]

In at leastone classification system, cruisers could be divided into three categories:light, medium andheavy. The light cruisers were at the lower end of the cruiser interval, around 350–400 meters, which likewise were sometimes interchangeable withfrigates under theAnaxes War College System,[10] medium cruisers between 400 and 500 meters, and heavy cruisers 600 meters and beyond.
