"Looks like an Imperial cruiser. Our passengers must be hotter than I thought. " ―Han Solo [ 1] Cruiser was a designation ofstarship class, which included wide variety of uses. The termstar cruiser was often used as an alternate term.[ 2]
Besides star-bound cruisers, there were alsomaritime cruisers .[ 3]

Throughout naval history, it was used for some of the largest and most commonwarships in a given fleet, but alternate designations likeStar Cruiser was also applied, like in thenavy of theGalactic Empire [ 4] and theRebel Alliance .[ 5] Ships that were designated with other names were also often referred to as cruisers.[ 6] [ 7]
The cruiser designation for warships second only tobattleships was used to a certain extent by theTrade Federation ,[ 8] theConfederacy of Independent Systems [ 6] and theGalactic Empire (as Star Cruisers).[ 4] TheRebel Alliance often used the Star Cruiser term to describe its heaviestMon Calamari warships, which served as either cruisers or battleships.[ 9]
In at leastone classification system , cruisers could be divided into three categories:light ,medium andheavy . The light cruisers were at the lower end of the cruiser interval, around 350–400 meters, which likewise were sometimes interchangeable withfrigates under theAnaxes War College System ,[ 10] medium cruisers between 400 and 500 meters, and heavy cruisers 600 meters and beyond. The latter group is also supplied under a completely separate class under the Anaxes War College System.[ 10] The alternate designation ofbattle cruiser was also used for some ships in the same size brackets.[ 11]
With a variety of different ship classifications in use, some of these used the "cruiser" definition for diminutive patrol ships like theGuardian -class customs vessel.[ 12] [ 13]
