"Coaxium. Know it, you do?"
"Coaxium? Standard hyper-fuel and incredibly unstable until refined."
Yoda andMace Windu[5]

Coaxium, also known asCorellian hyperfuel, or simplyhyperfuel, was a rare form ofhypermatter and type of expensivestarshipfuel mined onKessel.

Description[]

A container of refined coaxium

A container of refined coaxium

Coaxium in its raw, unrefined state was a very volatile and highly explosivehypermatter and had to be refined in order for it to be stable enough to be stored at room temperature. Even refined coaxium had to be handled with caution, as it was still explosive. Unrefined coaxium, once mined, would gradually begin to destabilize and turn red in color before exploding violently if not stored properly in a temperature controlled environment. One such coaxium refinery existed on thedesertplanet ofSavareen. 100 kilograms of refined coaxium was worth around 60 millioncredits.[2]

Thehyperdrive reaction chamber of a starship was coated in coaxium, which, when energized, allowed the ship to travel through hyperspace.[1] Coaxium, when used as a fuel, was so potent at energy generation that just a small amount of it was sufficient to power an entire fleet of ships. This made it extremely valuable and it was therefore highly sought after by many. TheGalactic Empire transported large shipments of coaxium under high-security measurements, with the intent of gaining complete control over the production of the substance.

Because of the knowledge aboutpurrgil and the gasClouzon-36, scientists discovered that coaxium naturally forms itself in places with strong interstellar energy like Kessel.[6]

History[]

"Do you know what that really is?"
"Yeah. About sixty million credits worth of refined coaxium."
"No. It's the blood that brings life to something new."
"Yeah, what?"
"A rebellion."
―Enfys Nest and Han Solo[2]

By the age of theGalactic Empire, coaxium was a highly valuable substance sought after by the Empire as well as various criminal organizations; theWhite Worms, thePyke Syndicate, andCrimson Dawn among them.[2] Control over coaxium trade was one of the Empire's earliest priorities to ensure it had enough for its fleets.[7]

Thirteen years prior to theBattle of Yavin, a youngHan acquired a small amount of coaxium, and he and his childhood friendQi'ra attempted to use it to barter their way off ofCorellia. He partially failed, only managing to secure his own escape, while Qi'ra was detained at the spaceport. Three years later, Solo became embroiled in aplot to steal a shipment of the precious fuel from a20-T Railcrawler conveyex transport onVandor forDryden Vos andCrimson Dawn. Due to the interference ofEnfys Nest and herCloud-Riders, Solo chose to release the tethers holding the coaxium rather than followTobias Beckett's orders to fly straight towards a mountainside. The Cloud-Riders' swoops were unable to hold up the heavy container on their own and were forced to drop it, causing a massive explosion that collapsed the mountainside.[2]

Finally, Solo, together with Qi'ra,Lando Calrissian, theWookieeChewbacca, andL3-37 made theKessel Run toobtain unrefined coaxium from the Pykes and bring it back to Vos in repayment for their past failures. This time, Solo succeeded, bringing the shipment toSavareen to be refined. He and his associates were soonconfronted by the Cloud-Riders, who revealed Crimson Dawn's intention to use the coaxium to spread death across the galaxy.[2]

Deciding to double-cross Crimson Dawn, Solo fed false information to Beckett, knowing he would sell him out to Vos, that he would be bringing two crates full of counterfeit coaxium, when in fact he was bringing the real shipment. Both Beckett and Vos were fooled by his ruse as the Crimson Dawn enforcers attempted to ambush the Cloud-Riders only to be fooled by decoys and empty crates before they were dispatched. Beckett soon took Chewbacca hostage and held him at blasterpoint to carry the coaxium off Vos's yacht, but Solo soon caught up to him and killed Beckett. Afterward, he gave the coaxium to the Cloud-Riders to fund their growing rebellion. After declining Enfys's offer for Solo to join them, she provided him a single vial of coaxium, which he used in asabacc game against Calrissian in which he won ownership of theMillennium Falcon.[2]

Sometime after theBattle of Yavin, theMC80 Star CruiserAurora Flare was carrying a large amount of coaxium from theRedhurne system. Upon hearing the news ofkingLee-Char's murder, theAurora Flarecrashed into anImperial-class Star Destroyer, creating an opening for many other Mon Calamari cruisers to flee to the rebel-controlledMako-Ta Space Docks.[4]

At some point following theGalactic Civil War, the racerMarcus Speedstar refueled hisracer with hyperfuel but underestimated the effect that the hyperfuel would have on his ship and caused his racer to spiral out of control and crash into the stands, killing hissister-in-law andniece.[8]

Speedstar's older brotherJarek Yeager had a container of hyperfuel in his private hangar.Jace Rucklin andhis team wanted to steal it for a long time since it could give a racer a boost. They managed to convinceKazuda Xiono to help them, but the team didn't know that the fuel's drops could turn a ship into a giant bomb. While Xiono managed to save Rucklin, his racer exploded and Rucklin swore revenge on Xiono.[9]

After theEvacuation of D'Qar,Kazuda Xiono led theWarbird gang toraid the remains of theFulminatrix to retrieve its coaxium for theColossus.[10] Sometime after theBattle of Crait, theWeequaypirateHondo Ohnaka hired a team of pilots to use theMillennium Falcon tosteal coaxium from aFirst Orderhovertrain onCorellia.[11]
