Class four container transports, also called aclass four freighter,Imperial Class 4 Cargo Ship or more simply as anImperial cargo ship, were tetrahedral,hyperspace-capable,bulk freighters built byKuat Drive Yards and used by theGalactic Empire to haul large numbers of crates and containers acrossthe galaxy.

Characteristics and role[]

"This is a class four freighter, isn't it?"
"Yes, why?"
"Containers on class four freighters are equipped with reentry thrusters. We can escape in a cargo container."
"You are correct. I am impressed."
―Omega andTech[3]

The class four container transport was shaped like a tetrahedron resting on the longest of its six edges. Thebridge module was located in front of the ship, at the narrowest vertex of the recumbent tetrahedron, and resembled[2] that of theArquitens-class command cruiser.[6] A typical standard yield for a class four transport was 230 large containers,[4] which were attached to the rear triangular side of the ship, encased between thesublight engines positioned at each of the three angles.[2] However, containers could be removed to make room for a hangar bay at the rear of the cargo portion.[7] The cargo of the transport could be accessed from the inside through at least one entry and exit point between the cargo and the vessel.[2]

In addition to its sublight drives,[2] the Imperial class 4 cargo ship[8] was equipped with ahyperdrive, which allowed it to travel throughhyperspace. It was also armed, boasting one top-mounted double-barreledturbolaser battery and two side-mountedlaser turrets.[2] As a Class four freighter, Imperial cargo ships were required to have sublight re-entry thrusters equipped in all of their cargo containers in case of an emergency jettison; these engines were meant for last-ditch efforts and could only be fired when inside aplanetaryatmosphere. Additional safety measures included sixescape pods stored in a section on the sides of the ship's bow which could be remotely jettisoned in case of an enemy boarding action to trap the intruders on board the ship.[3]

Every Imperial cargo ship required the presence of aninventory droid. Suchdroids were responsible for arranging the cargo[4] and monitoring all the goods to ensure it was organized and safely arrived at its destination on time. Also, inventory droids were tasked with logging every item and crew member of the transport and in addition were able to view the Imperial data network. Imperial cargo ships were used to haul large quantities of containers and crates fromspaceport to spaceport.[5] For security purposes, Imperial cargo ships hadstormtroopers and a security complement of at least fiveDT-series sentry droids.[7]

History[]

Early Empire[]

Class four container transports were in use shortly after theformation of theGalactic Empire. On amission toCorellia, the rogueclones of theBad Batch got past theplanet'ssensors undetected by attaching theirshuttle, theMarauder, to the underside of the freight assembly of a transport approaching the planet, detaching when the ship was close enough to the planetary surface.[9]

Some time later, near18 BBY,[10] the Bad Batch again encountered Imperial cargo ships, this time inCountDooku'sformer palace onSerenno when they were tasked byCid to steal part of the Count'swar chest before it was taken over by the Empire. Three Class four transports, includingTransport Three, were involved in a massive transport operation based on the palace and guarded byClone CaptainWilco and a force ofclone stormtroopers.Wrecker,Tech,Echo, andOmega successfully infiltrated Transport Three whileHunter was providing cover, but the first team was trapped inside the ship when Captain Wilco ordered it to take off and detach its pods after noticing Hunter. Echo decided to jettison a cargo container in a desperate effort to use it as an escape vessel thanks to its emergency re-entry thrusters, but due to the container's thrusters malfunctioning the team was left trapped while it was freefalling to the planet,[3] although the thrusters eventually fired and allowed them to survive the fall.[11]

Later in 18 BBY,[12] multiple class four transports traveled from the planetErebus.[13] At one point, when the Empireliberated the planet ofChorin, several class four container transports arrived with the Imperial fleet.[14]

War with the Rebellion[]

"You stole an Imperial freighter?"
―Hera Syndulla, to Chopper[2]
In order to steal a cargo ship, Chopper jettisoned its freight assembly.

In order to steal a cargo ship, Chopper jettisoned its freight assembly.

In3 BBY,[15] the rebelastromechChopper stowed away on anImperial cargo ship docked at theHorizon Base. Eventually, the astromech joined forces with the ship's inventorydroid, anRA-7 protocol droid calledAP-5, to steal the vessel from the Empire. In order to do so, Chopper managed to trap the stormtroopers serving aboard the ship in the freight assembly, before jettisoning the soldiers along with the containers. AP-5 then transmitted the coordinates for the planetAtollon to Chopper'sSpectres and thePhoenix Cell despite the opposition of theImperial captain. Chopper then rendezvoused the cargo transport with the rebels above Atollon.[2]

In2 BBY, theWeequaypirateHondo Ohnaka and theJablogiancrime lordAzmorigan acquired the flight plan for a cargo transport. They disabled the transport withion mines. However, the ship drifted into the upper atmosphere of the planetWynkahthu, where it was trapped in a storm. Most of Hondo'sUgnaught crew with the exception ofMelch were lost while boarding the ship. Hondo and Azmorigan managed to reach the ship with the help of the Spectres and AP-5, who was familiar with that class of ships. They managed to restart the ship and steal a cargo ofproton bombs and treasures. However, the recovery team was forced to flee when it accidentally activated the sentry droids. The recovery team fled back to theirstarship, theGhost, before the cargo ship descended into the vortex and exploded.[7]

Later, during the Spectres' attempts toliberate theplanetLothal from the Empire,Hera Syndulla, at Ohnaka's suggestion, latched theGhost onto the hull of a container transport to sneak past the Imperial blockade of Lothal. After waiting for some time, they latched onto the ship once it exitedhyperspace, successfully passing through the Imperial blockade.[16]

Behind the scenes[]

The Imperial cargo ship appears in theStar Wars Rebels series, first appearing in thesecond-season episode "The Forgotten Droid."[2]Dave Filoni, supervising director of the show's first two seasons, built a model of the cargo ship out of a manila folder when the show's crew was breaking the story of "The Forgotten Droid."[17]

  10. Per the reasoninghere, the seventh and eighth episodes ofThe Bad Batch Season 2, "The Clone Conspiracy" and "Truth and Consequences," can be placed in18 BBY. Therefore, all Season 2 episodes proceeding "The Clone Conspiracy" occur between19 BBY, which features the end ofThe Bad Batch Season 1 according toStar Wars: Timelines, and 18BBY. TheGalactic Empire, theformation of whichStar Wars: Timelines dates to 19 BBY, sentMayday's squad toBarton IV over ayear prior to the events of the twelfth episode, "The Outpost." As it occurs over a year into theImperial Era and is set shortly after the events of "Truth and Consequences," the events of "The Outpost" occur around 18 BBY. Following that logic, the ninth through eleventh episodes ("The Crossing" through "Metamorphosis") are also set around 18 BBY because they occur between the events of "Truth and Consequences" and "The Outpost." Finally, all season 2 episodes set after "The Outpost" occur shortly after its events, thereby placing those episodes around 18 BBY as well.

  12. Per the reasoninghere,Season 2 ofStar Wars: The Bad Batch takes place around18 BBY. The tally marks made byOmega inThe Bad Batch Season 3's first episode, "Confined," indicate the episode must take place at least twenty-onestandard days following her capture as depicted in the Season 2 episode "Plan 99." According toStarWars.com "Confined" Trivia Guide | Star Wars The Bad Batch onStarWars.com(backup link), Omega spends about 164 further days in captivity by the end of "Confined." As such, the events of Season 3 must begin around 18BBY.
