Behind the scenes[]
Caf firstcanonically appeared in the2014 novelA New Dawn, written byJohn Jackson Miller.[6] Although coffee and caf had never been designated as the same thing in a narrative source at the time, Miller explained that he decided to use caf as a more exoticStar Wars equivalent ofCoffea arabica.[18] Later, the short stories "Blade Squadron" and "A Good Kiss" identified the two beverages as the same;[1][9] unlike theStar Wars Legends continuity, wherecaf andcoffee are two different beverages.[19][20]
In that continuity, caf first appeared in the short story "Hasty Exit" byPeter M. Schweighofer, which was published in1996 inWest End Games'Shadows of the Empire Sourcebook.[19] Coffee was first mentioned in thefifty-ninth issue of the1977MarvelStar Warscomic book, written byDavid Michelinie andWalter Simonson[21] and published byMarvel Comics onFebruary 16,1982.[22] It first appeared in the novelChildren of the Jedi, written byBarbara Hambly and published in1995.[20]
Out-of-universe, the breakfast menu forDocking Bay 7 Food and Cargo atStar Wars: Galaxy's Edge describes Black Caf as "Regular coffee."[23]
A 2014 non-canonical television specialPhineas and Ferb: Star Wars features the occupation ofbarista, whose duties would include preparation and serving of the caf drinks.
