While on areconnaissance mission during the earlyyears of theGalactic Civil War, Breg crash-landed onKalist VI, where he wasimprisoned in theplanet'sImperiallabor colony, though his captors were unaware of his Rebel affiliation. At Kalist VI Breg befriended a fellowinmate, the idealistic seventeen-year-oldDak Ralter, and together the two planned their escape from the labor colony.
Wearing stolenuniforms, they boarded and planned to hijack anImperial prison barge, but astormtrooper shot Breg before the two fugitives could lift off. Although mortally wounded, Breg helped guide the inexperienced Ralter through takeoff and their jump intohyperspace, bound for theRebel base on the planetTierfon. Bregdied shortly after Ralter improvised a crash-landing on Tierfon, but Ralter would remember him fondly, later replying that he had a good teacher when asked of his own naturalpiloting andgunnery abilities.
Biography[]
Breg was a Rebel Alliance pilot during the Galactic Civil War.
Breg wasborn sometime in theyears leading up the conclusion of theClone Wars and theinauguration of theGalactic Empire in19 BBY.[1][3] Astarfighterpilot of theAlliance to Restore the Republic by the early years of theGalactic Civil War, Breg crash-landed on theplanetKalist VI during areconnaissance mission. Although Breg was captured by the Empire andimprisoned in the planet'slabor colony, his Rebel affiliations remained safely concealed. Otherwise, he would have faced an Imperialinterrogation droid, or worse.[2]
While at the labor camp, Breg made quick friends with anotherprisoner slightly younger than he, the seventeen-year-oldDak Ralter. The son ofpoliticalprisoners, Ralter had been born into captivity on Kalist VI. Breg was a free spirit and made quite a mark on the impressionable Ralter, telling him of a life of freedom that existed beyond thetransparisteel dome of the prison. Together they planned their escape from the complex. The two young men planned to steal anImperial prison barge and blast away from the planet. They first shorted out the camp's inner and outerpower fences, and managed to make it past theprison sentries. Stealing two slightly-used guarduniforms, they gained access to the camp's landing area with relative ease. They then triggered areactor alarm and staged a prearranged power outage in order to board thebarge.[2]

After Breg's death, Dak Ralter (pictured) regarded him as a good teacher.
Before they could lift off, however, anImperial stormtrooper became aware of what was happening and boarded theship in pursuit. Thestormtrooper shot Breg before Ralter could react. Although Ralter shot andkilled thetrooper in return, Breg was mortally wounded. With Breg lying immobile and dying on the barge'scockpit floor, thepiloting duties fell to Ralter, who had no experience with any technology more sophisticated than alaser drill. Only able to speak, Breg talked Ralter through the takeoff sequence as they departed from their Imperial captivity. Fortunately for the two youths, Ralter displayed a natural affinity for piloting, and, under Breg's tutelage, they soon enteredhyperspace en route for theRebel base on the planetTierfon.[2]
By thetime the two escapees reached their destination, Breg's condition had worsened considerably. He died shortly after Ralter miraculously managed to land the stolen barge on Tierfon's surface. Ralter went on to join theAlliance Starfighter Corps, eventually earning a position with the eliteRogue Squadron. When asked about his natural piloting andgunnery talents years later, Ralter remarked simply, in reference to Breg, that he had a good teacher.[2]
Personality and traits[]
Breg was a free spirit whose personality complemented well that of the impressionable seventeen-year-old Dak Ralter, who longed for a life of freedom outside the Kalist VI labor colony. The two youths' similar ages led to their quick friendship, and they soon developed a plan for escape from their Imperial captivity.[2]
A skilled starship pilot tasked with reconnaissance duty by the Rebellion, Breg, who was shot and mortally wounded during the escape attempt from Kalist VI, was able to talk the inexperienced Ralter through takeoff procedures and hyperspace entry in the stolen Imperial prison barge. The mark that the deceased Breg left on Ralter spurred the younger man to join the Rebellion as a pilot after reaching Tierfon.[2]
Behind the scenes[]
The Breg character was first mentioned in the1989 first edition of theWest End Games sourcebookGalaxy Guide 3: The Empire Strikes Back, written byMichael Stern. His creation served to supplement the backstory of Dak Ralter, with Breg identified as the driving force that led Ralter to first join the Rebel Alliance and who initially introduced him to starship piloting.[4]

Notes and references[]
- ↑1.01.11.2Galaxy Guide 3: The Empire Strikes Back, Second Edition states that Breg was "just a little bit older" thanDak Ralter, who was seventeenyears old at thetime of their escape fromKalist VI. Thevideo gameStar Wars: Rogue Squadron, which is set in0 ABY, immediately following theBattle of Yavin, states that Ralter replacedBiggs Darklighter inRogue Squadron following the Battle ofYavin, describing Ralter as "one of the newer, youngerpilots" and noting that he was "showing promise as anX-wingpilot" at that time, therefore placing Breg and Ralter's escape roughly in the time frame shortly preceding the Battle of Yavin, and thereby providing an approximate period for Breg's date of birth and approximate year for his death.
