Role(s)
Bloodfin, also identified as theSith Speeder, was the personalrepulsorcraftspeeder bike of theZabrakSith apprenticeDarth Maul. Like allFC-20 speeder bike models,Bloodfin was originally manufactured byRazalon. However, thespeeder was heavily modified to remove all nonessential systems, givingBloodfin the maximum output of speed when traveling across land for Maul's stealth missions. During his apprenticeship to theSith LordDarth Sidious, Maul keptBloodfin docked aboard his modifiedStar Courier,Scimitar, and later used the speeder bike to pursueQueenPadmé Amidala's escort during theNabooCrisis. When Maul reached the Queen'sroyalstarship in theTatooinedesert, he leapt offBloodfin andengaged theJedi MasterQui-Gon Jinn in aduel, only moments before the Queen and the Jedi got away. This act revealed Maul and theSith to theJedi Order, after amillennia of plotting in secret.
Characteristics[]

Darth Maul, theBloodfin, and DRK-1 Dark Eye probe droids
Bloodfin was originally a standard-issue and crescent-shapedFC-20 speeder bike model from the manufacturerRazalon,[1] with a single seat for onepilot[4] and a length of 1.65meters. Therepulsorcraft was heavily modified, however, by its owner,Darth Maul,[2] aZabrakSith apprentice.[1] Maul had the exterior of thespeeder bike pared-down and its nonessential systems removed[2]—including its sensor and weapons systems[1]—to make theSith Speeder as fast as possible when in use.[2]
Additionally,Bloodfin had its energy systems modified to divert all power to speed. As a countermeasure to the intensity of the speedBloodfin acquired, the speeder bike had a built-in "wait-mode" for dismount, which allowed Maul to have the Sith Speeder automatically decelerate[1] before it went on standby for him to mount the speeder bike again.[4]
Role[]

Maul keptBloodfin docked aboard his modified Star Courier, the Sith InfiltratorScimitar, when not in use.
As aSith Lord, Darth Maul usedBloodfin on assignment from hisSith Master,Darth Sidious, during stealth missions.[4] The Sith Speeder was kept aboard Maul's stealth ship—theStar CourierSith InfiltratorScimitar—until Maul needed its use.[2] WhileScimitar had acloaking device,[5]Bloodfin did not, so Maul usedDRK-1 Dark Eye probedroids tospy on his targets after landingplanetside.[4]
Scimitar would act as the Zabrak's base of operations until Maul's targets were found using his probe droids, at which point he would unload his Sith Speeder and pursue his targets.[3] Maul's modifications onBloodfin ensured the speeder bike would reach its fastest speed possible during his pursuits, making the use of hisstarship unnecessary for such a task.[2]
History[]
- "My only conclusion can be that it was… a Sith Lord."
- ―Qui-Gon Jinn to the Jedi Council, after dueling Darth Maul on Tatooine[4]
As part of the Sith plot to subjugatethe galaxy, Darth Sidious orchestrated theblockade of the planetNaboo by collaborating with theTrade Federation and itsViceroy,Nute Gunray. When Gunray failed to take theQueen of Naboo,Padmé Amidala, hostage and kill theJediambassadors sent by theGalactic Republic, Sidious assigned Maul to the task instead. Maul, as theSith apprentice of Sidious, obeyed his Master's command and was eager to gain revenge on theJedi Order by completing his mission. As the Jedi had believed the Sith to be extinct for over a millennia, they did not expect—nor would they come to believe—that the Sith could have returned.[4]
Using the Sith InfiltratorScimitar, Maul tracked Queen Amidala'sNaboo Royal Starship toTatooine soon after she successfully escaped theNaboo invasion. To locate the Queen and her entourage, which included the Jedi ambassadorsQui-Gon Jinn andObi-Wan Kenobi, Maul used his starship's DRK-1 Dark Eye probe droids to spy on the populace ofMos Espa until he located his target. Some time after the conclusion of theBoonta Eve Classicpodrace, during which Jinn freed thehumanboyAnakin Skywalker fromslavery, Maul located his targets and set a course to intercept theJedi Master on his return to the Queen's starship. UsingBloodfin, Maul was able to catch up with Jinn and Skywalker just as they arrived at the Naboo Royal Starship in thedesert.[4]

Maul dismountedBloodfin—using its "wait-mode"—when he attacked the Jedi Qui-Gon Jinn during his pursuit of Queen Amidala.
Maul used the Sith Speeder's capabilities to slowBloodfin down long enough for him to dismount, then usedthe Force to vault into position andengaged the Jedi Master in aduel. Moments earlier, the Sith Speeder nearly ran over the young Skywalker as he ran, but the boy avoidedBloodfin thanks only to Jinn's warning beforehand. Before Maul could defeat the Jedi Master in combat, Kenobi was able to get the starship to take-off, but not before getting Jinn safely aboard. Despite Maul's failure to complete his mission at that moment, his act—at last—revealed the Sith's continued existence to the Jedi, a fact which Jinn took back to theJedi Council and was denied.[4]
Behind the scenes[]
- "For Darth Maul's speeder we needed a very small motorcycle. That crescent shape evolved from another design that I initially developed for the battle droids. George remembered that design and said, 'Here, just use it for Maul's speeder.'"
- ―Doug Chiang[6]

Darth Maul's speeder bike first appeared inStar Wars: Episode IThe Phantom Menace, the1999Star Warsprequel trilogy film.[4] The speeder bike was officially identified inStar Warscanon as Sith Speeder on theStarWars.comEncyclopedia.[7]
