Chronological & political information

Bernie Jabesq was aHumanmale who lived during thedecades that led up to theestablishment of theGalactic Empire.[1] Around32 BBY,[3] he worked as anengineer at themain hangar ofTheed, thecapitalcity of theplanetNaboo.[1] That same year, the planet wasinvaded by thedroidarmies of theTrade Federation.[4]

Personality and traits[]

Jabesq had light skin, brownhair andeyes,[5] and a very short stubble upon his face. While in service, he wore a yellow, double-breastedjumpsuit.[2] Like some of his colleagues, includingSimon Jabesq[6] andIain, Bernie Jabesq had customized hishelmet by writing his name infuthork,[2] the informal Naboo script.[7] He also wielded ablaster rifle.[5]

Behind the scenes[]

Bernie Jabesq was one of the many background characters featured in the1999 movieStar Wars: Episode IThe Phantom Menace, the first installment of theprequel trilogy, in which he was portrayed by an unknown extra. A posed promotional picture of the character appeared inStar Wars: Episode I Insider's Guide—an interactive encyclopedia on CD-ROM released byLucasArts—but his name was not explicitely mentioned.[2]

The "Naboo Soldier" action figure

The "Naboo Soldier" action figure

Despite being a character of very minor importance, the engineer was made into an action figure of the toy lineStar Wars: The Saga Collection in2006. Although it was erroneously labeled as a "Naboo Soldier," the figure had the distinctive markings of Bernie on the helmet.[5]

The character's name long remained unknown, since the transliteration of Naboo futhork had not been revealed. In2008, the first official mapping of the futhork alphabet appeared inThe Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia,[8] which allowed to decipher the letters on the helmet. This article assumes that inscribed helmets of the Royal Security Forces correspond to their wearers' names, following the example of Simon Jabesq, whose helmet reads "Simon" when using the symbol-to-letter correspondence fromThe Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia.[6][8] In2012, the character's full name was first identified as Bernie Jabesq inStar Wars: The Phantom Menace: The Expanded Visual Dictionary.[1]
