Point of origin

"We are Alderaan. We answer rage with wisdom. We answer fear with imagination. We answer war with hope. If one life with a single drop of Alderaanian blood survives, Alderaan survives. If one life with a passion for Alderaanian creativity survives, Alderaan survives. And we are, each of us, important. And whatever happens, I bow to all of you—and to our future."
―Princess Leia Organa, after the destruction of Alderaan[3]

Alderaanians were a cultural group ofhumansnative to theplanetAlderaan.[2] Known for their pacifistic values and devotion to the arts, prominent individuals includedViceroyBail Prestor Organa and hiswife,QueenBreha Organa, who were the adoptiveparents ofPrincessLeia Organa.[4] They were driven to the brink of extinction by the destruction of their homeworld by theGalactic Empire via the originalDeath Star in0 BBY, with only a few scattered remnants across the galaxy being all that remained of the pacifistic people.[1]

Biology and appearance[]

The Alderaanians were arace ofhumans native to theplanetAlderaan. While majority of individuals had skintones like reddish tan, golden tan and dark brown,[1][5] some like the adoptedPrincess[4]Leia Organa had more pale skin.[1]

Society and culture[]

The Alderaanians were a pacifist society, one devoted to the fine arts and to philosophy, and freely shared their knowledge with others. They were also careful to live in harmony with theirplanet, which was renowned for its untarnished beauty.[6]

Alderaan also had amonarchy[7] that was dedicated to the welfare of its people and had existed for thousands of years.[8]

Alderaan had a number of traditions aboutbraids such as who wore them, when, and why that vaired from continent to continent and age to age. Themonarch of Alderaan was expected to wear braids.[8] Some Alderaanianmales, likeNash Windrider wore theirhair long by tradition.[9]

Early in their history, the Alderaanians employedsoldiers like most other cultures, before gradually developing into a pacifist society. Overtime, Alderaanians became noted for sharing their knowledge with the rest of theGalactic community.[6]

Throughout history, a number of Alderaanians emigrated to other planets, founding communities and exporting their unique culture far from theirhomeworld. Such offworld communities notably existed onNaboo[6] andSullust.[10] Generations before theGalactic Civil War, a number of Alderaanians also established their presence on the planet ofEspirion, which was known for being open torefugees and wanderers. There, they intermarried with thenatives, aspecies ofred-skinnedhumanoids with taperedears. As a result, a population ofhalf-Alderaanians, exhibiting non-human characteristics, arose on Espirion. In the immediate aftermath of theBattle of Yavin, their community was led byChiefBeon Beonel.[2]

People without a planet[]

"As wespeak, the Imperials are hunting down all surviving Alderaanians."
"All? How do you know?"
"Word travels through the Rebel forces. Too much so to simply be rumor."
―Evaan Verlaine and Leia Organa[1]

When Alderaan wasdestroyed by theGalactic Empire to test the capabilities of their newDeath Starbattle station, most Alderaanians perished along with their home planet. Those who survived by being offworld were targeted[11] for extermination by the Empire in apurge,[12] albeit with some exceptions such as the Imperial loyalistNash Windrider[9] and the ImperialAdmiralGallia Kryder, who survived the purge by moving herfleet to the edge ofWild Space.[12] Shortly after the Battle ofYavin, during which theRebel Alliance retaliated against the Empire and destroyed the Death Star, aconvoy of refugees wasrescued byEcho Squadron.[11]PrincessLeia Organa set off on amission to rescue the surviving sons and daughters of Alderaan.[1]

Some Alderaanians who served in the Alliance to Restore the Republic wore atattoo of theRebel Alliance starbird beneath their left eye to symbolise the planet they came from and the people they lost.[13] This became widespread enough that Imperial veterans were able to recognize the tattoo on sight and know that the wearer came from Alderaan, as was the case with an Imperial shuttlepilot confronted byCarasynthia Dune.[14]
