Chronological & political information

"This girl—Aayla—she called me through the Force. She helped calm me in battle with the wampa. Could she be…"
"A Jedi? Perhaps."
―Quinlan Vos and Tholme[5]

Aayla Secura, bornAaylas'ecura, was a femaleRutianTwi'lekJedi Master in the later days of theRepublic, who served with distinction as aGeneral during theClone Wars. She served as aPadawan under the tutelage ofQuinlan Vos, and later, Vos' own masterTholme. Both Secura and Vos survived a brush with the dark side early in theirJedi training, though she later proved herself worthy ofknighthood.

After Secura was promoted to the level of Jedi Knight, the Clone Wars broke out, and she was one of many Jedi to participate in theFirst Battle of Geonosis. She served in various campaigns, surviving such infamous battles as those onHypori andKamino. Indeed, such were her achievements that Secura was promoted to the level of Jedi Master near the beginning of the conflict.

As a Jedi Master, Aayla Secura led the Republic war efforts atQuell and was instrumental in thedefense of Kamino and laterMaridun. However, despite her undoubted prowess, Secura met her end during the instigation ofOrder 66 onFelucia. Master Secura was remembered for generations by the people of the worlds she had helped during her life, and stories of her were known to have become part of the culture of many such people.

Biography[]

Early life[]

Born around48 BBY,[2] Aayla Secura, or Aaylas'ecura in hernative tongue,[13] was ablue-skinned,femaleRutianTwi'lek, and a member of the influentialClan Secura on herhomeworld ofRyloth.[1]

A young Secura and her savior

In46 BBY, a two-year-old Secura[2] was discovered on Ryloth to be strong inthe Force during a mission undertaken by the youngQuinlan Vos, theKiffarPadawan ofJedi MasterTholme. Though she was clan memberLon Secura's niece, the young Secura was sold intoslavery to aHutt crime lord after the death of her father. During Tholme and Vos's visit, theHutt's newly-acquired guardwampa freed itself went on a rampage, and Secura found herself in immediate peril. Fortunately, she emanated her need through the Force and wassensed and saved by Quinlan Vos. A strong connection was formed between them, and Vos persuaded Master Tholme to test Secura to betrained as aJedi onCoruscant. Secura joined theJedi Order,[5] underwentyears of training with Master Tholme,[13] and, when she was about ten years old,[14] Quinlan Vos took her as his Padawan.[15]

To celebrate the occasion of her thirteenth birthday, Vos gave Secura the gift of aHeart of Fire, a glowing stone from his homeworld[16] ofKiffu,[3] which she later passed on to a fellow Twi'lek Padawan namedXiaan Amersu, with whom Secura felt kinship.[16] Secura once learned a very valuable lesson when her dear petT'dadied. Her master comforted her by relating how her beloved was now part of the Force, and would also live on in her heart. Ironically enough, she buried T'da onFelucia[17]—a planet she returned to just before her own life abruptly ended.[4]

Padawan Secura and her Master, Quinlan Vos, undertook many successive missions together. They solved theMystery of the Lodi onSolibus IV,rescued ayoung princess fromskyboatpirates onXoman III,[16] and faced theterbeasts ofOgden Minor. Additionally, Vos shared with the Secura the story of theStark Hyperspace War, a conflict between theGalactic Republic and the pirateIaco Stark in which he had taken part as a Padawan.[18] Secura and Vos conducted undercover operations on thedesert planetTatooine while Jedi MasterQui-Gon Jinn was stranded there[19] in32 BBY.[3]

Later, Vos and Secura were assigned on a mission to Ryloth to investigate the source of the drugglitteryll. To hide their own involvement, Secura's uncle,Pol Secura, and Vos's clanmate,Asanté Vos, captured and drugged the two Jedi with the substance, inducing amnesia. While Vos was abandoned on themoonNar Shaddaa,[20] Secura was kept on Ryloth by her uncle, who had to feed her more glitteryll each day to keep her memories from returning. She forgot that she was a Jedi; she forgot she had a master and that she harboredForce powers.[11]

Quinlan Vos, searching for his Padawan, came to Pol Secura's quarters. He showed his Padawan herlightsaber but failed to restore her memory. Vos had discovered that Pol Secura was behind the drugging, and when the Twi'lek initially refused to reveal the identity ofChom Frey Kaa, his patron in the glitteryll scheme, the Jedi used the Force to strangle Secura with his ownlekku head-tail and electrocute him withForce lightning. Trying to rescue her uncle, the amnesiac Secura lashed out with the Force, accidentallyForce pushing him off a balcony to his death. Secura fled,[11] blaming the unfamiliar Quinlan Vos for the death of her uncle.[21]

Brush with the dark side[]

"From the moment you stepped foot on this planet, I sensed you…your scattered thoughts…I sent out my thoughts…my will…I drew you to me…for I need you, little Jedi. Great need…"
―Volfe Karkko to Aayla Secura[21]

Secura is seduced to the dark side of the Force by Volfe Karkko.

Desiring revenge on Quinlan Vos, Secura hid herself on a pirateship en route to theprison worldKiffex, twin planet of Kiffu. There, she discovered and releasedDark JediVolfe Karkko from hisstasis field. She gave in to thedark side of the Force and was willing to help theAnzati Dark Jedi.[21] He gave her command of his Anzati minions and had her hunt down the Jedi he had lured to Kiffex—Vos, Tholme, and the itinerant MasterZao. Karkko needed them alive to regain his strength; he needed to suck their "Jedi-soup." But first he needed to feed himself and his Anzati. Secura took the Anzati and stormed a local stronghold. There she faced off against the Jedi and got away with their captured people.[22] Vos followed her and reached the prison of Karkko. Again, she fought against her former master, but then she at last realized her true identity. At that moment Karkko used Force lightning to knock her out. When she woke up, she found Karkko dead.[12]

Leaving Kiffex for Kiffu, the Jedi met with a delegation from theJedi High Council—MastersMace Windu,Adi Gallia, andPlo Koon—who reassigned Secura from Vos, in light of the the darkness that touched them both, to complete her training as Tholme's Padawan. While she, Tholme, and the councilors made their return to Coruscant, Vos, on the other hand, pictured himself as "a leaf blown forth by the wind," and he left Kiffex, going where the Force told him to go.[12]

Return to Coruscant[]

"Patience, Aayla. A Jedi you still are, and with you is the strength to overcome. Butbelieve it, you must."
―Yoda to Secura after the latter returns from Kiffex[23]

En route aboard the councilors' starshipIntrepid, Plo Koon used histelepathic powers guide Secura as she arranged and organized in her mind her newly recovered memories, allowing her to remember her past adventures with Quinlan Vos. Secura was struck by the scarred face ofIntrepid crewmemberJace Dallin, a remnant of the Stark Hyperspace War. By way of explanation, Dallin, Tholme, and the councilors—all Stark veterans—shared their reminiscences of the conflict, replacing Secura's lost memories of Vos' account.[18]

After Secura returned to Coruscant, she sought the counsel of JediGrand MasterYoda. He told her that he was relieved when she had been found. She herself feared she was still lost after what had happened to her. Master Tholme had briefed Yoda on all that had happened to Aayla, and Yoda counseled her that she should not judge herself harshly. She replied that something was missing from her life now. Yoda offered his advice, telling her she was a Jedi and to be patient. Finally, he wished for her to understand that the Force leads them towards not what they always want, but what they need. Still somewhat confused, Yoda gave her one last piece of advice—to believe the Force was with her and would help her.[23]

Ascension to Knighthood[]

As Tholme's Padawan, Secura went undercover, infiltrating the Twi'lekclan Fenn. She discovered that the clan's leader, Ro Fenn, was planning an attack on the Secura clan's male heir, the childNat Secura. She informed Tholme and quickly joined her master against this new threat. Facing off against twoNiktoMorgukai, Tholme was defeated but still managed to slip on their ship. Unfortunately, he was discovered and imprisoned. Secura followedVilmarh Grahrk, who was in league with the Nikto, to his shipInferno, but the Devaronian escaped.[5]

The Force led Secura to a junkyard onOrd Mantell. There she found her former master, Vos, and helped him fight against bounty hunters. She explained all that had happened to Quinlan, and the two decided to rescue Nat Secura and Master Tholme. They succeeded in tracking down Grahrk and persuaded him to tell them where the two Morgukai went; the Nikto had left Ord Mantell forKintan, the home planet of the Nikto and site of the fortress of the Twi'lekKh'aris Fenn, who, all the while, had been behind the clan's current strife and misery.[24]

They quickly set course for Kintan and there faced off against the two Morgukai,Bok and his father,Tsyr, who had waited for the Jedi to arrive.[24] Escaping their pursuers at a river of lava, the two Jedi broke into the fortress only to be confronted by the Nikto again:[25] Secura was to rescue Nat Secura and Tholme, Vos would fight the Nikto.[26]

Secura reached the dungeon, defeated thetorture droidAX/RX, freed Tholme and Nat, and went to Vos's aid. Vos had already beheaded Tsyr, but he had been knocked to the ground by Bok. Secura saved Vos's life by engaging Bok before he could deliver the final blow. She wounded the Nikto, taking his right hand, but did not kill him. Bok let himself fall hundreds of meters in order to keep his honor. The three Jedi and Nat survived. They returned the young Twi'lek boy to his father, but, unfortunately, Fenn escaped from Ryloth toCountDooku's hidden stronghold. Ro Fenn, now forced to face Twi'lek justice, was sent into a land of no return—theBright Lands, the side of Ryloth that was baked in eternal sunlight. Back on Coruscant, Secura and Vos were both promoted by the Jedi High Council. Secura was granted the rank of Jedi Knight, and Vos, that of a Jedi Master.[26] In28 BBY, shortly before the promotion, Tholme made a record of Vos' recent history which cited his rescue of Secura among his accomplishments.[27]

Secura visited theKuat Drive Yards as a representative of the Jedi Order for the inspection and unveiling of thecorporation'sDelta-7Aethersprite-class light interceptor. Finding thestarfighter's testing performance satisfactory, Secura and Adi Gallia performed a ceremoniallightsaber salute in theKuati's honor, recorded and reported on by the "Jedi Watch" segment ofHoloNet News Vol. 531 #47, published on 13:3:14GrS.[28]

Clone Wars (22 BBY–19 BBY)[]

"Aayla Secura made a point of seeing us off personally; calling us the bravest soldiers she had ever met. It's a good thing we were wearing helmets, because none of us could bear to look her in the eye."
―Diary of the 501st, before Order 66[29]

Battle of Geonosis[]

Aayla Secura was in theJedi Temple at the time of theFirst Battle of Geonosis, and thus was a member of[30] the 200-strong[31]Jedi task force sent to the planet to rescue Jedi KnightObi-Wan Kenobi, his PadawanAnakin Skywalker andSenatorPadmé Amidala ofNaboo, who were held captive there and scheduled for public execution in thePetranaki arena.[30]

Taking an active role in the fighting, Secura was one of approximately thirty survivors of the ensuing skirmish between theConfederacy of Independent Systems' forces and the Jedi strike team. During the fighting she dispatched asuper battle droid with a kick to the face while fellow Jedi KnightSarrissa Jeng dealt with aGeonosian warrior nearby. As the fight turned in the Separatists' favor, Secura was forced at gunpoint, along with her fellow survivors, into a circle in the center of the arena. Secura and the others narrowly escaped certain death due to the timely arrival of Grand Master Yoda, leading the newly commissionedGrand Army of the Republic. Secura and the survivors were evacuated on severalgunships and she went on to lead her own squad ofclone troopers into the developing ground battle. This battle marked the outbreak of the wider conflict that would come to be known as theClone Wars.[30]

Secura struck up a lasting friendship with Jedi MasterDarrus Jeht and gave him the gift of a customblaster, accompanied by the teasing remark that he would not need it were he her equal as a Jedi.[32] During the Clone Wars, she traveled toCularin to visit him and his companionTrilinae Untaire. Though Secura expressed concern that Jeht's preoccupation with his large collection of personal starships was in violation of theJedi Code's opposition to personal possessions, she eagerly took part in repairing his antique starship theLegacy upon learning that he had acquired backstage tickets for a concert bySien'Soro, a band enjoyed by both Secura and Untaire.[33]

Mission to Corellia[]

Like almost every other fully trained Jedi in the Order, Secura became aJedi General. Eight standard days after the Battle of Geonosis, she was sent on amission to interceptTechno UnionscientistRatri Tane, who had fled toCorellia with the files and prototype of new droid circuitry, along with fellowCaamasi JediYlenic It'kla.[8]

Infiltrating the Wheel[]

Secura fights Zenex on The Wheel

Less than a standard month later, Secura infiltratedthe Wheel, posing as a down-on-her-luck mechanic named Jayzaa, in order to locate Quinlan Vos, who hadn't reported from his undercover mission since the Battle of Geonosis. Together, they secured a copy of the plans of the impending Confederacy attack onKamino. With the help ofKhaleen Hentz andTookarti they kept crime bossZenex from stealing back the plans. After killing Zenex and his henchmen, Vos told Secura that he was going to set up spy networks for the Republic.[34]

Battle of Kamino[]

"Perhaps you try too hard?"
"Maybe, I don't know. Things just get so...complicated sometimes! It's not like when I'm flying or fighting—or like when I was podracing. Everything seems so clear then."
"Maybe things aren't always that simple."
―Aayla Secura and Anakin Skywalker[9]

Aayla Secura later visited Kamino alongside MasterKit Fisto and saved thefacilities from sabotage from within—aKaminoan nano-virus meant to wipe out the clone troopers. During the last minutes of the battle against super battle droids (under the control of a double-crossing Kaminoan), Secura fell into the waters of Kamino and nearly drowned before being saved by Fisto. As an amphibian, theNautolan was able to absorb oxygen from the water and breathe it into Secura to help her breathe. When they were up on the surface again, they killed the double-crossingKaminoan using the virus by tricking her into injecting it into herself.[35] Her collaboration with Fisto, a fellow Geonosis veteran, and his ability to read lekku—unusual for a non-Twi'lek—led to a close relationship between the two, one which pushed the limits of the Jedi Code at times.[15]

After using the intelligence she and Quinlan Vos had collected, Secura was present at a meeting with various Jedi Generals hosted by Obi-Wan Kenobi prior to the battle on Kamino, there,Oppo Rancisis and Vos explained that the Confederacy needed to attack before they became aware of the Republic forces on Kamino, otherwise they would back out. Secura would be one of the many Jedi Generals that would use her starfighters to lead the flight to intercept the enemy fighters as the fighters for the clones were not ready yet. Minutes before the battle, Secura found Padawan Anakin Skywalker trying to fix a droid, claiming that he was meditating while doing it. The Jedi told Skywalker that maybe he was trying too hard to fix it and that things were not so simple. The Separatist forces soon arrived and every Jedi got ready to fly, with Secura engaging in the initial strike with her Jedi starfighter and successfully defending the cloning facilities.[9]

Battle of Hypori[]

Later into the war, Secura ascended to the rank of Jedi Master. Subsequently,[13] the Twi'lek Jedi, along with fellow Jedi MastersDaakman Barrek,Ki-Adi-Mundi,Shaak Ti,K'Kruhk participated in theBattle of Hypori, where she was one of the Jedi who survived their first encounter withGeneralGrievous. Grievous gripped Secura and the deadTarr Seirr with his feet and sent both flying into the ceiling.[36] She suffered grave wounds in the attack, and only survived due to the intervention of a squad ofARC troopers.[37] It was after this mission that she was assigned to the327th Star Corps, and later forged a close relationship withCommander Bly.[38] Later, Secura and the JediAgen Kolar andVoolvif Monn were cornered in battle byLM-432 crab droids and trapped bybubble wort projectors, only to be rescued and freed by Anakin Skywalker, now a Jedi Knight.[39]

Battle of Quell[]

"Are all Jedi this reckless?"
"Just the good ones."
―Republic Admiral Yularen and Aayla Secura[40]

Aftercapturing an important Separatisttactical droid, Secura and Commander Bly were dispatched to lead an assault over the planetQuell.[41]

As her ships were assaulted byB2 Rocket droids, Jedi Anakin Skywalker and his PadawanAhsoka Tano, arrived and helped Bly and Secura evacuate the decimated Republic Cruiser.[40]

The Jedi and the Clones destroyed most of the droids on her ship but were ambushed by a large number of Super Battle droids and were forced to flee toward Skywalker's ship. But then, an explosion started behind the pursuing droids. Skywalker noticed this early and Force pushed Secura, Tano, and some more clones into the ship's doorway and tried to use the Force to stop the explosion, but it didn't work and seriously injured him, but fortunately, Tano and Secura rescued him. Before the Jedi could dock aboard theResolute to give Skywalker medical attention, fire from droid fighters knocked out one of the pilots, accidentally activating thehyperdrive. Secura told AdmiralWullf Yularen to take theResolute up above, before they took the cruiser with them.[40]

After a treacherous trip through hyperspace, the Jedi and the few clones in their company crash landed on the planetMaridun. After they landed, Secura and Tano took Bly and the remaining troopers (except for Rex, who guarded Anakin during the night) to look for help. They found a drawing of a tree, so they looked for it, but some giant pods fell down. Secura noticed that other pods had been dragged away by. Secura guessed that whatever or whoever had dragged away the pods were sentient creatures and thought they might be able to help Anakin. The group followed the tracks and were attacked by a pair of mastiff phalones and only Bly, Tano and Secura came out alive. The next morning, they found a village ofLurmen who had settled on the planet, far away from the war. The village elder,Tee Watt Kaa refused to aid them, fearing that destruction would break the peace they already had. However, at Tano's request, he did give them medical supplies and had his son,Wag Too help deliver them. But he requested that only one Jedi take the supplies and that Bly should follow. The Jedi agreed to this, Tano and Bly went to bring back Anakin, and the injured Jedi was healed.[40] During her time in the Lurmen village, Secura spoke with Kaa on the circumstances of the settlers' arrival on Maridun, learning that the Lurmen had abandoned the starship on which they had arrived to escape the nativeAmanin. The Jedi was surprised by the Lurmen's willingness to strand themselves on the foreign world, which the elder explained by way of his people's dedication to the principals of pacifism.[43]

Later, an army of droids, led by GeneralLok Durd, landed on Maridun and upon meeting Tee Watt Kaa, claimed the planet for the Separatists. The Jedi and the clones decided to leave the village, or else the droids would have killed the Lurmen. They left but decided to steal a Separatist ship to get off of Maridun. They were followed by a spy droid, but they destroyed it before it could send news of their plans to the Separatists. The team climbed a tree and saw a Separatist fort and Durd testing a new weapon that destroyed life forms, but not machines. After the successful test, the Separatist army headed for the Lurmen village. The Jedi and the clones mounted a raid on the fort that night and stole a ship and two shield generators. They then headed back to the village. They offered their help, which Tee Watt Kaa turned down, but they then barricaded the village anyway. The Separatists reached the village and tried using their new weapon, but the shield generators stopped the effects of it. They then sent the droids out. Secura and the others obliterated the first wave, but the second group got past them and destroyed the shield generators. Secura and Tano took care of them while Skywalker destroyed the new weapon. After the battle, Wag Too thanked the Jedi for saving the village, and Kaa admitted that the Lurmen owe the Jedi their lives. Finally, three Jedi cruisers appeared and picked up Secura, Tano, Skywalker, Rex, and Bly.[42]

Mission to Alzoc III[]

Later Secura went with Jedi MasterLuminara Unduli andClone Commanders Bly andGree, toinvestigate the planetAlzoc III, where Separatist activity had been reported by the Huttcrime lordJabba Desilijic Tiure. The Republic squad took severalAll Terrain Tactical Enforcers and headed for the coordinates of the location provided by Jabba. Along the way, the walkers were forced to scale a vertical cliff, and when a walker's path became blocked by two bulks ofice, Bly immediately ordered his men to blast them. Secura, however, ordered to hold, stating that the blast could lead to the collapse of the entire cliff, and proceeded to remove the obstacles in a more delicate way. Upon arriving at their destination, both the Jedi and the clone troopers witnessed a crash site of aMunificent-class star frigate and were stunned by the view of huge masses of ice and numerous starship parts floating freely in the air. Deciding to investigate the unusual phenomena, the clone troopers used theirjetpacks to reach what remained of the ship's hangar, while the Jedi followed them by using the Force to navigate through debris. Rendezvousing at the hangar, the group was attacked by aVulture droid, and it became apparent that the crash site attracted Separatist interest as well. Unduli and Secura quickly defeated the droid and ordered the clones to scout ahead and find the ship's data recorder, while they themselves engaged the battle droids and followed by an alternate route.[44]

After reaching the remains of the ship's bridge, Gree began toslice the vessel's data recorder, while the Jedi and the clone troopers protected him from the attacking droids. After successfully neutralizing the battle droids, Gree was able to access the record of the ship's final moments. It became apparent that an individual had used aTelgorn dropship to board the Separatistfrigate which was carrying two classified weapons, stole one of them, and then departed shortly before the frigate was hit by an explosion. The vessel had then crashed on the planet, where the weapon created a gravity anomaly. Soon, it was also revealed that theDark AcolyteAsajj Ventress had already visited the crash site and set the remains of the frigate toself-destruct. Unduli and Secura ordered the clone troopers to safety and then briefly dueled Ventress. The two Jedi trapped the Dark Jedi under the bulk of ice before leaving the crash site and reporting to the Jedi High Council.[44]

Distracting the Zillo Beast[]

"We aren't having much effect."
"Time to leave, it is."
―Aayla Secura and Yoda, on the Zillo Beast[45]

When theZillo Beast broke out of its captivity on Coruscant, it stormed its way to the Senate building and captured the escape craftSupreme ChancellorPalpatine was using to usher himself, Anakin Skywalker, and Padmé Amidala to safety. Secura teamed with Yoda to leap onto the beast's back, attempting to distract it and allow the occupants of the escape craft enough time to scurry away from the beast's clutches. They were successful in their attempt, and followed the group to safety, shielding them from the cloud of gas from the toxin-bombs used to kill the Zillo beast.[45]

During a scouting mission to theOuter Rim, Secura came across aconfrontation between a Separatist frigate and fugitive bounty hunterShahan Alama'sFlarestar-class attack shuttle over the planetFlorrum and sent agunship team led by Bly to investigate.[46]

Hunting Attuma Duum[]

"Yes, tragic the events were—but a failure your mission was not. Destroyed was Duum's operation. And sense a change inyou I do, Aayla Secura."
"Yes...maybe. Perhaps I found something within myself that wasmissing before."
―Yoda and Secura after her mission to Cavamina Minor[23]

Around21 BBY, Secura was assigned an escort of elite clone troopers to arrest themercenaryAttuma Duum on the moonCavamina Minor. She was betrayed by Duum's operatives, and in theensuing struggle in thecantina, all her clones were killed. She fled, and herDelta-7B was shot down. She broadcast a distress signal on channelDelta-622-Echo. She was pursued on foot bySabat, Duum's chief of security. TheForce-sensitiveShon-Ju intervened to rescue her, engaging Sabat and hissecurity droid. Sabat activated hisjetpack, leaving Shon-Ju to assist a wounded Secura, who passed out from her wounds. Secura later woke up alone inShon-Ju's castle. She explored the castle and found Shon-Ju watching over his students. The man told her his story, how he had trained as a Jedi but was rejected. Secura was ready to leave to return to her mission, but Shon-Ju told her to wait, because he wanted Duum shut down as well and agreed to accompany her.[23]

The next morning, they stole two abandonedbombers to infiltrateAttuma Duum's headquarters. Once aboard, Shon-Ju rashly took her lightsaber to trip the alarms. Secura used her Force powers to subude the guards, but Sabat took Shon-Ju hostage and force her to surrender. Once placed in suspension, Duum visited them but was called off to other matters. He hadlured twofleets, one of theRepublic Navy and the other one from theConfederate Navy. When Sabat was distracted, Shon-Ju told her he wanted to kill Duum to humiliate the Jedi, who had failed to capture the mercenary. Shon-Ju then used own Force powers to escape his bonds and attack Sabat, throwing the latter into a turbine and killing him. Shon-Ju left Secura in her bonds for the moment, telling her that her destiny was in her hands, but she wouldn't stop him from finishing what he had come for. Shon-Ju then went to confront Duum, who revealed hiscyborg body. As flames from the damaged base spread near her, Secura accessed the Force to escape. She arrived in time to intervene, preventing Shon-Ju from finishing a damaged Duum. Shon-Ju stated attacking her instead, allowing Duum to escape. As the two traded blows, Secura had a flashback to what Yoda had once told her. Shon-Ju picked her up by her lekku, sayihng he would end it for her quickly, but she just laughed in response, saying being a Jedi was accepting one's place. She then used the Force to grab her lightsaber and cut off Shon-Ju's hands. Shon-Ju said the Jedi kepttaking from him, and ran off in tears into the flames.[23]

With the base in its death throes, Secura stole another bomber to return to Coruscant. There she met Grand Master Yoda to discuss the results of her mission. Yoda consoled her, telling her Duum's operaiton was destroyed, and that he sensed a change in her. She replied that she found something inside of her which had been missing. She had doubts though, whether the change was for the better, as Duum could still be alive. Unbeknownst to her, both Duum and Shon-Ju had indeed survived, the latter accepting a set of prosthetics.[23]

Mission to Devaron[]

Later in the war, Securainvestigated Separatist raids on Republic supply lines along theCorellian Trade Spine as part of a Jedi task force of masters Tholme,T'ra Saa, Kit Fisto, andAn'ya Kuro. During the mission, Tholme delivered to Securaholographic message from Vos in which he claimed to have defected to the Confederacy,[15] in reality an undercover operation orchestrated by his former master.[47]

When the headquarters of the raiders were pinpointed to the planetDevaron, Secura went undercover as "Tuulaa Doneeta," the spoiled daughter of a Twi'lek shipping baron. This way, she managed to infiltrate SenatorVien'sai'Malloc's apartments as her guest, with Masters Tholme ("Miles Croft"), and Kuro ("Saba") as her servants. The Senator was the one who backed the raiders, hoping to play both sides in the war. She had hired bounty hunterAurra Sing, an ex-Jedi, to make sure nobody learned of her plans.[15]

The Jedi on Devaron were Sing's next targets, and after caving in her former Master and Tholme, she ambushed Secura. The Twi'lek survived and attacked Aurra. The two fought, and Secura was able to win by hitting the bounty hunter where it hurt: her feelings of abandonment. Aurra reacted by unleashing her rage, but thus became disoriented, and Secura cut off the antenna implant—installed by the hunter's Anzati mentors—that allowed Sing to feed off the fear of her prey. As Sing was enveloped in anger, Secura was at peace, and turned the former Padawan over to local authorities. She eventually ended up on the penal colony ofOovo IV. Then, Secura rescued Tholme and Kuro and provided intelligence she had gathered about the raider headquarters to Fisto and Saa and the raiders were dissolved in a battle between them and Republic forces.[15]

Betrayal on Honoghr[]

OnNew Holstice, Secura was apprised by Bly of acostly victory overMandalorian forces and joined Tholme in a Republic hospital. Her one-time master revealed to Secura that Quinlan Vos had not really betrayed the Jedi Order but was a double agent infiltrating the Separatists to spy on Dooku, although he feared that Vos had fallen to the dark side.[47]

She was then sent to the head of a squad of clones and seconded by theClone Commander Bly onHonoghr to recover theScientific Instrument Package (SIP) containing all data on adeadly gas developed by the Separatists and fell into the hands ofNoghri warriors. She had to battle against the fierce natives when unexpected help came: her former master Quinlan Vos. But when they had recovered the SIP, Quinlan turned against Aayla to bring her to Dooku. Aayla was again forced to fight Vos but was defeated. Bly intervened to save her life; shooting Vos and causing him to flee.[48]

Secura and Ki-Adi-Mundi were dispatched on atop secret mission on the planetHitaka for the Supreme Chancellor—in reality, a ruse to distract the Jedi from operations on the world by the Separatists,[49] clandestinely led by Palpatine in hisSith identity of Darth Sidious.[4] Secura and Mundi conducted diversionary action of their own, deceiving Jedi KnightAnise I'Zak into conducting a decoy mission while they completed their objective.[49]

Mission to Endor[]

Secura, with the battle droid, begin their duty to kill the Beast in the Mouth of the Mountain.

Shortly after, Master Secura and Commander Bly investigated a deserted Separatist outpost in the Endor system. After discovering the base to be empty, (and finding remains of countless clone troopers and battle droids) Secura went out scouting in the forest on her own, during which she was spied upon by alone battle droid. When it attempted to shoot her, she severed its appendages with her lightsaber. While interrogating the droid, Secura was caught unaware by the native Ewok people hiding in a tree and was shot with a tranquilizer dart.[50]Secura awoke within an Ewok treehouse, and while using the battle droid as a translator, she learnt that the natives believed that she was a forest spirit. As a spirit, the Ewoks said that it was her duty to vanquish theBeast in the Mouth of the Mountain that terrorized them. Secura, taking the opinionated battle droid along with her, complied to their wishes. While climbing the very tall mountain to the Beast's lair, Secura argued with the droid over her sympathy for her clone troopers and became increasingly annoyed with it as their journey progressed up the huge mountain peak.

Upon reaching the cave of the Beast in the Mouth of the Mountain, the Jedi Master tripped on a large pile of bones at the mouth of the cave, alerting the Beast to their presence in its lair. The huge Beast quickly impaled the unarmed battle droid with its sharp claws, killing it, but this fortunately left the Twi'lek Jedi Master free to use the Force on the collapsing parts of the ceiling of the cave, forcing them down upon the monster, killing it instantly. Having fulfilled her duty as the Ewok's spirit, Secura then returned back to her Republic gunships at their rendezvous point, where Bly and her clone troopers were patiently waiting for her. Dismissing her commander's worries about where she had been, the pair, along with their squadron of clone troopers, headed on their next mission. The Ewoks would remember Secura's brave deeds forever, by immortalizing her in a large painting depicting her defeat of the huge Beast, which they would respect for many years to come.[50]

Siege of Saleucami[]

Secura accompanied Tholme to the planetAnzat in order to investigate the renegade JediSora Bulq, Dooku's right hand. She found Bulq's ship, fought against a Morgukai warrior and stole the logbooks. The logbooks revealed separatist activity onSaleucami.[51]

Then, the Council assigned her on a mission toTrigalis.[51] There, she met Obi-Wan Kenobi, obsessed withstalking Asajj Ventress, and offered himher Jedi starfighter.[52] She then received a transmission from Tholme, telling her that the Separatists had created an army of Bok's clones on Saleucami, the Morgukai warrior she had defeated years ago, specially trained by Anzati to kill Jedi.[53]

The Republic therefore sent an army to laysiege to Saleucami, supported by many Jedi including Quinlan Vos, apparently repentant but still playing a double game. Piloting a Jedi starfighter with the Republic'sBlue Squadron, Secura provided air support to the ground forces and destroyed Separatistion cannons exposed by her allies' sabotage of theirshield generator, forcing the enemy to retreat.[10]

Secura and Vos fought side by side against Morgukai clones,[54] destroyed theplanetary shield that prevented the Republic forces from bombarding the planet and destroyed the cloning facilities.[55] Secura then had to face Bok again and killed him, while Vos faced Sora Bulq in a duel, sliding more towards the dark side of the Force. Secura and Tholme went into meditation and snatched Quinlan from the darkness, allowing him to defeat his opponent.[56]

Death[]

Following the siege of Saleucami, Secura and her troops weresent to Felucia to help Jedi KnightBarriss Offee uncover a plot to poison Felucia's water supply.[57] There, Secura had also gained the respect of the501st Legion in the time they served with her when she saved them from a number of deadly acklays and helped destroy an auto-turret system.[29] After freeing Offee and her new PadawanZonder, Secura and the PadawansEkria andDrake Lo'gaan were able to discover thatPresidenteShu Mai of theCommerce Guild had arranged the poisoning of Felucia's water supply.[57]

While Offee took a squad toHar Gau, Secura and Commander Bly went toNiango.[57] While preparing to engage an oncoming onslaught of droids, Secura glanced to the skies as aFelucian bird flew overhead. Standing behind her friend and commanding officer, the ever-loyal Commander Bly received word from the Supreme Chancellor ordering him to carry outOrder 66, which denounced Secura and her fellow Jedi as traitors to the Republic. Distracted by the bird, the Twi'lek could not even ignite her lightsaber before she was struck by blasterfire from behind; as she crumpled to the ground beneath a large fungal growth, her troops continued to fire at her body repeatedly. Soon after, the AT-TE walker that was closest to her fired at Barriss Offee, making her the next victim of theGreat Jedi Purge.[4] Both died on 16:5:23 GrS.

While on the run from his own clone forces, Quinlan Vos felt a void in his sense of Secura,[58] and concluded that she had been killed.[17] Immediately after the Twi'lek's death, Secura's friend Jedi Master Darrus Jeht felt her demise through the Force and experienced a vision of her being killed by the clone troopers, which greatly upset him.[32]

Legacy[]

"They believe you are a forest spirit…"
Anonymous B1 battle droid[50]

When theGalactic Empire emerged, official records compiled bySate Pestage stated that Aayla Secura and Barriss Offee were both executed because they were plotting to poison Felucia's water supply, although it was really the Separatists.[59] When the purge of the Jedi Order was enacted, a member of the 501st reflected on his time on Felucia with Secura and, though he believed the Jedi to be traitors to the Republic, hoped that she had been granted a quick death as he believed that "she had earned that much".

However, despite the attempts of the Empire, Aayla Secura was remembered by the peoples of the worlds she aided, in some cases merging with pre-existing goddess myths or historical figures. As late as40 ABY, a professor by the name ofMovac Arisster believed that he had seen a vision of Secura telling him to kill a Jedi, though this had in fact been a projection by theSith LadyLumiya. By that time, there were still fictitious accounts of her life being written.[60]

Personality and traits[]

"Does it concern you that you have doubts?"
"No, I think it is good. I trust in my skills and training, but without doubts, without realizing that things could spin out of control, I would become arrogant, a failing that could lead to the dark side."
"Very good, Aayla Secura. Now you know why you are worthy of being entrusted with so important a mission.
"
―Jedi Knights Ylenic It'kla and Aayla Secura[8]

Although her clothing was practical, Secura was not devoid of ornamentation as this ornate navel jewelry illustrates.

Aayla Secura was an empathetic and highly intelligent Jedi but was also impulsive and somewhat mischievous.[1] Becoming very confident, though not arrogant, in her abilities, she was a good leader and a skilled tactician; her quick thinking earned her the respect of many clone troopers during the Clone Wars. Her given name, Aayla, was common for female Twi'leks and it meant 'smoke' or 'mist' inRyl.[61]

In the aftermath of the events on Kiffex, she felt something was missing inside of her. Master Yoda consoled her and told her to believe that the Force gave her strength. Events on Cavamina Minor years later forced a change inside of her, and she said she felt something had been found.[23]

Secura had a brief romantic relationship with Kit Fisto, but she was dedicated to the Jedi Order and decided the Order was more important than her relationship with Fisto, though they would still nurse feelings for each other. From childhood, Aayla formed an intimate Force bond with her savior, the stripling Padawan Quinlan Vos, years before he turned to the dark side; she once said that he had been like a father to her.[40] Like her relationship with Fisto, however, she eventually learned to let go of her attachment to her master, and she later taught Ahsoka Tano, Skywalker's padawan, to do the same.[40] She did not let anger or violent feelings control her.[62] She also had a close friendship with Commander Bly, but like most clones Bly obeyed Order 66, betrayed her trust, and killed her.[4]

Secura's attire was practical, albeit somewhat revealing, and allowed her to both move freely and show her Jedi affiliations. She also wore ornate jewelry on her navel.[63] Secura liked to do a form of moving meditation as she thought better that way.[9]

Powers and abilities[]

"The Force has made us strong."
―Aayla Secura[29]

Aayla Secura was trained as aJedi Guardian,[64] a particularly martial class of Jedi,[65] becoming an impressively skilled fighter. She quickly masteredAtaru,[66] the fourth form oflightsaber combat, in the fifth,[65]Djem So, had some ability,[67] and was a practitioner of dual-lightsaber combat.[29] Secura's lightsaber skills allowed her to survive the battle of Geonosis,[30] hold her own against General Grievous, (albeit with help from several other Jedi)[36] and overpower the skilled bounty hunter Aurra Sing in a duel.[15] She had also grown adept in unarmed fighting, especially while sparring with Commander Bly.[57] In combat she was known to use theNexu stance evasive roll.[7] On some occasions, she would wield her green-bladed lightsaber in tandem with her blue blade, in order to apply herJar'Kai skills in combat.[29] Early in the Clone Wars, she was almost killed by a Mastiff phalone attack and could not save most of her men.[40] She was good at deflecting shots fired from point blank range and evading darts.[34][48] She was tough enough to get back up after being tossed around by Vos.[48] She was always better at flying machines than Vos.[64]

In addition to her combat skills, Secura was very skilled in stealth and infiltration which she learned from Quinlan Vos and Tholme, who were considered less intuitive with the Force that she was.[25] Secura also had some skill withForce cloak, using it to prevent a swarm ofQuarra beasts from noticing as she walked among them, which was a hard to learn ability that some masters couldn't complete.[15] The Jedi couldhide her Force presence, as she did to prevent Sora Bulq from noticing any more than a passing flicker of her power when she was spying on some traitors to the Republic. She usedForce push and Force pull to great effect,[23] such as when she telekinetically pressed a lever and pulled her saber to her hand,[40] when she threw debris at Sing and Force pushed the assassin,[15] knocked Noghri into a wall,[48] and slew Bok by pushing him against a laser gate, after using theForce to leap around one of his blows and outmaneuver him.[56] Previously, she had also used the technique of saber throw against otherMorgukai warriors.[25] She also coulddeflect blaster bolts with the Force.[48] Once, she raised abarrier to protect herself when a ship she was on was destroyed,[24] and later held back deadly gas.[45] Though she was defeated, she was able to survive the blast of a Death Watch rocket.[68] In addition to her power to move objects, she couldaugment her body’s abilities.[64] Secura could fall a great distance without being hurt, if she had time to ready herself for the leap,[25] and on Maridun, she used the Force to jump up a massive tree and spring from side to side up a wall.[42] HerForce senses were such that she could find other Jedi,[24][22]detect the health of her allies,[26]know Ahsoka's feelings and fears,[40] and feel the dark side in others and sometimes feel their intent to betray her,[48] and she was a skilled pilot, more so than her master Quinlan Vos[64] She was also known to use her beauty and Force powers to seduce people into giving information.[51] She could use the Force to calm others,[5]make them follow her orders,[24] or fall asleep.[15] The Jedi had a slight measure of skill atForce healing.[26] Aayla Secura also dabbled in the dark side, such as gaining a proficiency in Force choke,[64] was able to useForce lightning.[62]

Equipment[]

"This isyours, Aayla. Yourlightsaber. Take it."
―Quinlan Vos[11]

As Quinlan Vos' Padawan, she used a red-bladed lightsaber,[11] and adopted a blue-bladedweapon during her retraining under Master Tholme.[24] By the time of the Clone Wars, Secura possessed two sabers of her own construction,[66] and wielded either a blue and green blade together,[29] or a single blue lightsaber,[30] that she primary used duringOuter Rim Sieges campaigns, until herdeath onFelucia, where she was betrayed by the troops under her command and gunned down before she could defend herself.[4]

When Secura was rescued from slavery, she wore a simple light brown dress with darker head and foot wraps of the same hue.[5] Early in her apprenticeship to Vos, she wore traditional, cream-coloredJedi robes joined with autility belt, a sleeveless brown cloak, and a headband dotted with gold-colored ornaments.[16] By the time of her mission to Ryloth, she had taken to wearing a mesh bodysuit beneath a sleeved cloak,[69] and wore similar—albeit less covering—garb in her amnesiac enslavement by Pol Secura.[11] In her time on Kiffex, Secura wore[21] a Twi'lek-style Jedi uniform:[66] browncombat boots, trousers, and unadorned head-and-lekku-wraps, with arycrit hide belt[70] and one-sleeved vest. Secura preferred this fitted clothing to the traditional, flowing Jedi robes, which she found restrictive in combat.[71] Though Secura again wore the mesh suit while returning to Coruscant with Tholme,[18] she sported the Twi'lek Jedi robes as his Padawan,[24] as she would continue to do until her death.[4] Secura also wore various disguises when operating under an assumed identity: she wore aHuttese slave-girl costume as a servant to Ro Fenn,[5] black pants and top with shoulder pads and goggles as the mechanic Jaayza[34] (or Jayzaa),[51] and white-and-purple gowns as trade heiress Tuulaa Doneeta.[15]

Under thecall signRed Two,[72] Secura flew a Delta-7Aethersprite-class light interceptor with Jedi MasterTsui Choi'sRed Squadron in the battle for Kamino of the Clone Wars.[9] By the time of her covert mission to Trigalis, she possessed a blue-hulledEta-2Actis-class interceptor, which she lent to Obi-Wan Kenobi,[52] and later flew a red-brownActis-classinterceptor with Blue Squadron during the siege of Saleucami.[10]

Behind the scenes[]

Aayla Secura was originally created for theExpanded Universe by artistJan Duursema and writerJohn Ostrander. In early concept art for the character, she was a fish-like creature rather than a Twi'lek.[74] After seeing a piece of cover art of the final character,George Lucas decided to place her inStar Wars: Episode IIAttack of the Clones.[1]

Aayla Secura was portrayed byAmy Allen inStar Wars: Episode IIAttack of the Clones andStar Wars: Episode IIIRevenge of the Sith,[1] and was voiced byJennifer Hale in theStar Wars: The Clone Wars TV series. Series directorDave Filoni had Hale perform the role with a French accent in homage to the French resistance fighters of World War II.[75]

Her surname came from Nat Secura, originally introduced in the short storyOf the Day's Annoyances: Bib Fortuna's Tale fromTales from Jabba's Palace. The two eventually appeared together inRite of Passage. Writer John Ostrander originally wanted to kill Secura inTwilight, but was convinced by Jan Duursema's daughter Sian to let her live.[73]

Secura is depicted in the gameStar Wars: Battlefront II as having two lightsabers—a green one and a blue one (although she has blue and purple sabers in the cutscenes and thePlayStation Portable version)—but uses a single blue saber in allG- and T-canon appearances. InStar Wars: The Force Unleashed Secura makes appearance in theWii and PlayStation Portable-exclusive duel mode.[76] and is voiced byKari Wahlgren. In the video gameStar Wars: Episode IIIRevenge of the Sith, all concept art can be unlocked by entering AAYLASECURA as a cheat code.[77]

While theDark Horse Comics story "What Goes Up...," from2006'sStar Wars: Clone Wars Adventures Volume 5, established that Secura traveled from Endor to take part in the Battle of Felucia,[50] thesixth issue of theStar Wars: Dark Times series, published in thefollowing year, states that she was deployed to Felucia from Saleucami,[78] making the exact sequence of events unclear.
