I am a software advocate and speaker. I love to build tools to help others.I like to advocate for open-source software in my legacy industry, by showing people how to integrate GitHub, Node.js, and VS Code into their COBOL, RPG, and Db2 environments - mostly IBM i systems. I am fortunate enough that my work allows me to not only write new code, but help others use new tech to write new code.Pre-covid I was an in-person speaker at more than 5 conferences a year, including IBM Think (2019), COMMON Europe & US, plus plenty of user groups. Since then, I am back to speaking regularly at in-person events. I also just ran my own online event for the first time in 2021, again in 2022 and it was a huge success. My largest contribution to my industry is a few VS Code extensions I have written that allow developers to write and compile legacy languages like RPG and COBOL, as well as tools for legacy unit testing and code coverage. This is all targetted at an OS named IBM i, previously AS/400.

IBM i: actually using automated pipelines, builds and git

In this blog post, I write about my two new and bigger open-source projects - Source Orbit and IBM i CI - tools that allow businesses to make it easier to integrate with GitHub Actions with their legacy platforms.

COMMON Denmark

My primary topics for the COMMON Denmark event were the following:* An introduction to VS Code & Code for IBM i (extension)* Working with Db2 for i inside of VS Code

Code for IBM i

Code for IBM i is the only free and open-source extension to allow developers to write legacy languages on IBM i (AS/400). This project doesn't only provide a way for people to use VS Code with their legacy code, but also a home for a lot of first-time-contributors - which I take great pride in!

VS Code extension: Db2 for i

I got to work on re-writing a database client for VS Code to work with the IBM i platform, but in the OSS space! This includes being able to execute SQL statements, export data, and integrate tightly with the Notebooks API to generate charts from data right in the database.

COMMON Europe Prague

Once again I get to promote not only VS Code, but also Code for IBM i, an open-source extension for working with legacy platforms and languages like COBOL and RPGLE.Not only did I give a workshop, but I also get to talk about how people can start to use git and GitHub for their source control - mostly new technologies for businesses who have legacy systems.

VS Code for IBM i: rpgle is modern

A video in which I show off how RPGLE, a language typically only written on midrange platforms, can work with VS Code, git and GitHub seamlessly.

VS Code Day: Empowering Legacy Software Devs

I got to speak at VS Code Day, an event hosted by Microsoft, to talk about how VS Code is changing the way people have written software in a legacy industry and how it will continue to affect that industry for years to come - all thanks to the power of Open Source Software.

PowerUp 2023

The largest "IBM i" OS event in NA. I get to spend a few days advocating modern software tools like VS Code, GitHub Actions plus Codespaces and how they work with legacy platforms like IBM i.
