Synopsis[]

SpongeBot plays with RoboGary.
The episode begins with the French Narrator walking to the screen and telling the viewers to imagine a trip toBinary Bottom. The scene cuts toa robotic version of SpongeBob's pineapple, where a holographic mailman delivers mail. We see a robot version of SpongeBob, named SpongeBot, wake up and go through his daily routine: unplugging himself from his bed, assembling his body and face in the bathroom, then eating nuts, bolts, and grease for breakfast. RoboGary enters, and SpongeBot uses a laser pointer from his nose to play with him. SpongeBot's alarm alerts him that it's time to work, but RoboGary wants to keep playing. SpongeBot says goodbye to Gary and equips his Krusty Krab hat, which is a many-legged robot. As he adjusts the hat into position, RoboGary opens up SpongeBot's back and hides inside of him. Unaware, SpongeBot leaves the house.
SpongeBot first stops by SquidBot at hishouse, who is assembling a clone of himself. Annoyed, SquidBot kicks him away, and finishes the clone, who self-destructs after realizing he has to live next to SpongeBot. Next, SpongeBot greets Pat-Tron at hishouse, who wants to come to work with him, but powers down. A hologram explains that he is recharging, and SpongeBot promises to bring him fuel from work. RoboGary peeks out of SpongeBot's back as he turns around, poking Pat-Tron's body.
SpongeBot arrives late to work, where SquidBot is waiting. SpongeBot uses a key in his finger to openThe Krabby Battery, pressing a button that makes a giant hand drop a large battery into a receptacle. This forms the basis of the restaurant. Inside, Mr. Krabs is a robot on a track, who is malfunctioning and repeatedly saying, "You're fired!" SpongeBot hits him with a large wrench to fix him. SquidBot comments that he wishes he was fired, much to SpongeBot's horror, and RoboKrabs orders them both back to work.
SpongeBot begins by cooking "Krabby Batteries," frying them on the grill and cutting up small batteries as condiments. RoboGary, still inside SpongeBot's body, leans out to taste some, but electrocutes himself. SquidBot leans his head into the kitchen to relay an order, and Gary crashes into him, fusing them together. To SpongeBot's horror, Gary runs out of the restaurant with SquidBot stuck upside-down to his shell. Gary briefly stops to do his business (expelling a small amount of nuts and bolts, which SpongeBot cleans up), then runs into theGrease Bucket. PlankBot, a wind-up toy version ofPlankton, sees them causing chaos. He attempts to chase after them, but winds down. A fish version of Karen winds him back up, and SpongeBot stops by to ask her which way Gary went.
Still with SquidBot on his body, Gary runs into the street, causing a traffic collision. The angry citizens chase after him and SpongeBot. Gary also passes through the house of Sandroid, a large robot head that resemblesSandy, triggering her to wake up. Sandroid flies off to attack him, and SpongeBot follows them. PlankTron follows behind, but is run over by robot citizens, and Karen sets him back upright.

Sandroid emerges from the water.
AtLube Lagoon, robots are seen sun tanning, playing volleyball, and sellinghot dogs. Suddenly, GrandPat appears from thetime closet, only to read the Lube Lagoon sign and realize he is not where he expected. Seeing a swarm of angry robots, he retreats back into the closet. Meanwhile, the robots (including Sandroid) chase Gary to the lagoon, and SpongeBot thinks of a plan to stop them. He comes up with the idea to build a brick wall, uses a rocket to reach the shore, and quickly builds the entire wall. He tells Gary to stop before he crashes, but Gary proceeds to crash through the wall, followed by the robot citizens and Sandroid. Gary is now detached from SquidBot, and runs off happily chasing a flutterbot (a robot butterfly).
However, the rest of the robots are stuck in the lagoon, as Sandroid approaches from below. She pulls them all under the water, and after a surge of electricity, combines them all into one large body. Sandroid launches plugs out of her mouth to capture the rest of the robots on the beach, reinforcing her body. She surfaces and begins ridingBikini Atoll, revving up one of the trees like a motor and jet-skiing away. She announces a "rise of the robots," which PlankBot (who is stuck on her finger) supports. The French Narrator appears and says that, while the viewer may believe robots will never replace humans, "anything can happen in a cartoon." He begins stuttering and glitching in a robotic manner as Sandroid heads towards a real-life city skyline in the distance.
Production[]
This episode was in production onAugust 23,2021.[7][8]
Arielle Phillips drew promotional art referencing this episode for theTidal Zone'sSan Diego Comic-Con poster during February and March2022.[9]
Clips from this episode were showcased at the San Diego Comic-Con onJuly 21, 2022.[10]
This episode was confirmed by Cartoonlounge.de onAugust 2, 2022.[11]
This episode, along with "You're Going to Pay...Phone" and "A Skin Wrinkle in Time" were officially completed in September2022. However, they were delivered onDecember 2, 2022, because of theKamp Koral Tidal Zonesegment being completed and delivered on the same date.
A background design of theGrease Bucket from this episode, seen onRebekie Bennington's website, was posted on November 7, 2022.[12]
OnDecember 11, 2022,Dave Cunningham shared a "sneak peek" of a character's feet from a future episode. It eventually turned out to be Karen's feet in her new, fish form.[13]

Art[]
Background design[]
- Designed bySterling Richter[3] andRebekie Bennington,[12] watercolour layouts byGeorge Nachev, painted byBrad Sutton.[16]
Character design[]
- Designed bySimon Edwards,[7][8] which were inspired by Fred Osmond's "hilarious"[7] and "killer"[1] rough storyboards. Clean-up design on incidental bots by Joann Chang.[17]
Model sheets[]
- Designed byChris DeRose.[2]
Storyboards[]
- Rough boarded byFred Osmond,[1][7][18][19][20] written by Mr. Lawrence, cleaned up by the "superstar plussing team" ofEliza Herndon,[21]Ibrahim Buenrostro,[22][23] Simon Edwards,[24] and Eddie Trigueros.[25][26] Revisions by Brad Vandergrift.[20]
Deleted scenes[]
- Various scenes during Eliza Herndon's plussing portion were eventually changed and replaced:
- In the beginning of the episode, a holographic worm was to chase Norton the mailman as he delivers SpongeBot's mail, but it was removed for unknown reasons. "[It was] a gag that didn't make it through but [Herndon] still really like. (Got to keep those mailman populations level... sorry Norton)"[27]
- SpongeBot's way of getting ready for the day in front of the mirror was changed; rather than just his eyes, nose, and mouth being placed onto his face in the final episode, he went through a tray of interchangeable faces, and later, a flappable face at the pull of his antenna: "A big source of exploration was the bathroom sequence. If memory serves, we ended up going off Fred Osmond's very fun rough board (with Brad Vandergrift working his revisionist magic for that), but one of my first suggestions was a tray of interchangeable faces... With the help of Dave Cunningham (who was an INCREDIBLE help on such a demanding episode!) we streamlined the idea a bit, having SB's faces flip with the pull of his antenna.. I completely forgot about the last face, which definitely gave me a shock looking through these files HAHA".[20][28]
- SpongeBot's door originally featured multiple openings in of itself: "There were lots of variations on certain gags to see what worked and what didn't. One was this very self indulgent spin on the Tex Avery-esque never ending door gag, which was just a little too convoluted/asynchronous with the tone looking back now... but fun to suggest!"[29]
Production notes[]
Eliza Herndon:
- Herndon hoped that "everyone enjoyedThe Tidal Zone!" and said "Everyone put their all into it--that goes for every episode, but is ESPECIALLY true of this one. Certainly a memorable opportunity!"[21]
- "This was one of the most challenging episodes I had been on at the time (and I was only assigned the beginning, which is the tamest part!!)–accommodating and redesigning characters, sets, and props is one thing, but trying to find ways to be inventive/avoid clichés is another!"[30]
- "There are so many aspects of this job to enjoy that it's so hard to pick a favorite, but I do really enjoy character acting and trying to get into the minds of the characters. [SpongeBot and RoboGary eating breakfast] was a really nice sequence that had a lot of opportunity for experimentation—dialogue deliveries waiting to be matched in the drawings and trying to make menial tasks such as a regular morning routine seem novel! SB's unique in that he's so EARNEST—it can be hard to pull off more "subtle" acting and not seem boring, but it's rewarding when you do capture his charm!"[31][32]
- "Gary's scenes were really just going off Fred's boards, but having a 3 month old kitten at the time who was ALSO pacified by laser pointers came in handy! I adore SpongeBob's bond with Gary and think much of that is owed to constantly being surrounded by cats of my own HAHA".[33]
- "Having one of your favorite cartoon characters [(Porky Pig)] be known by the general public for his stutter definitely came in handy with these stuttering scenes. Really cute way to symbolize the "rough around the edges" charm so inherent to these characters and this world."[34]
- "I'm happy to have thrown my hat into the ring on this! There's a lot I'd do differently now, but I'm happy with what holds up. Definitely some of the hardest work I put into an episode for the main show —this section seems like a breeze now! But it's one I'll always remember".[35]
- "Everyone REALLY poured a lot into this one, and it absolutely shows. Ibrahim J. Corona gave the characters so much life and was instrumental in establishing the personalities/dynamics.....Simon Edwards did his dynamic boarding magic to give these guys a ton of energy/appeal (and did some CRAZY crowd scenes!), and Cartoon Wizard Eddie Trigueros knocked it out of the park with incredibly charming (and COMPLEX!) action scenes. So lucky to work with these mega talents".[22][25]
- "I'm again SUPER grateful for Dave's constant support/patience/workshopping/feedback--I hadn't entirely overcome my Green Artist Jitters yet, and definitely felt intimidated by this one. Thanks to his constant guidance and support we were able to carve a vision that worked best for the cartoon, and the final product is really something special--especially knowing all that went into it! I'm again to lucky to be a part and to work with so many uber-talented people. It's episodes like these that really remind me of just how lucky I am!"[36][37]
- Seeing the final animatic for the episode "blew [her] mind at just how dang solid everyone's boards were."[38]
Chris DeRose:
- DeRose had a lot of fun designing the BG incidentals in this episode,[2] and was thankful for the positive feedback that the designs received.[39]
Fred Osmond:
- Osmond said that "[Dave Cunningham] and [his] team really knocked this one out of the park" and said the final designs for the Binary Bottomites were "excellent work."[40]
- Cunningham said in response that "[Osmond's] boards are always exciting to work on" and that "this one was amazing!"[41]
Sterling Richter:
- Richter said it "was [a lot] of fun figuring out how to flesh out a discarded computer item cyberpunk landscape in show style, bladerunner adverts and all", with "lots of fun and helpful director guidance on this one too!"[3]
Simon Edwards:

Four RoboGary designs, with the "A" one having certain concerns.
- Four preliminary designs for RoboGary were made during production, with one of them being noted as "tooJimmy Neutron?," referencing how similar the design might be toGoddard from that series.

The scene Simon Edwards was referring to.
- Edwards stated that he may have "aged a few years" while working a segment of this episode's chase scene.[42]

The second design for Sandroid, dated on August 23, 2021. Many of its features were cut, likely for simplicity.
- During the process of designing Sandroid, the second version had many of its weapons scrapped. Simon Edwards, who helped storyboard and design characters in the segment, said that they were thankful "we kept things simpler in the final."[8]
- According to him, it is unknown who or when the "Sun Bleached" Don Newhouse got added to the episode.[43]

Trivia[]
General[]
- This episode premiered as a part of "The Tidal Zone" special event.
- On its original airing, and all subsequentTidal Zone re-airings, this segment was paired withThe Patrick Star Show segment, "Shrinking Stars."[44]

Karen as a fish.
- Karen appears as a regular organic fish instead of a computer in Binary Bottom. This implies that the roles of the organic sea creatures and the machines are reversed.
- However, Karen's wall form appears in the Grease Bucket laboratory with no visible changes from the Bikini Bottom counterpart.
- Pearl is the only main character who does not have a Binary Bottom counterpart in this episode.
- The binary on the Grease Bucket's menu translates to "spongebob spon."
- The brick wall that SpongeBob builds is inlive-action.
- This episode was originally scheduled to premiere on Friday,November 25,2022 in the United States at 7:00 PM,[45][46] but due to their sister episodes not being completed in time for their intended release date, it got replaced with theNickelodeon premiere of the2021 filmThe SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run.[47][48]
- This episode was later scheduled to premiere at this exact time onJanuary 13,2023,[49][50] but it instead premiered at 7:15 PM, mirroring its proposed chronological order inThe Tidal Zone.
- Sandy is the most altered character in Binary Bottom, as she is only a mechanical head and is more aggressive than usual.
- This is the second episode of the main series where the main-universeSpongeBob is absent. The first was "The Algae's Always Greener," where aMr. Plankton Universe counterpart of him appears instead. However, the Alternate-Universe counterpart used the same likeness as the regular SpongeBob, while SpongeBot in this episode uses a different character design, so this is the first episode without main-universe SpongeBob where not even his exact likeness is shown.
- Likewise, this is the first episode without anysponge characters, as SpongeBot is a robot counterpart.
- This was due to the episode being part of "The Tidal Zone" crossover event, intended to include characters from the spin-off series.
- This is also the first episode in the main series in which every character is absent. Only their robotic counterparts appear and Karen is replaced by a fish.
- This is the second episode edited by Nicolas Carr to not use any "Hot Steel and Slide Licks" since they debuted in "Ghoul Fools," the first episode being "Fun-Sized Friends." The episodes "Gary's Got Legs," "Squid's on a Bus," "Broken Alarm," "SpongeBob in RandomLand," and "Goofy Scoopers" also do not use any Hot Steel and Slide Licks, but those episodes were edited by guest music editors.
- This is the fifth instance in which SpongeBob's alarm clock becomes a living character. The first was "Truth or Square," the second was "Gary's New Toy," the third wasSpongeBob Comics No. 48, and the fourth was "SpongeBob's Big Birthday Blowout."
- This marks the third appearance of the Tidal Zone following "No Pictures Please" and "The Night Patty," and its return following "The Night Patty" after a five-year absence.
- Fred and Incidental 7's robot counterparts in this episode later appear inSpongeBob Simulator.
- This marks the firstSpongeBob SquarePants episode to have the voice ofDana Snyder.
- When this episode is seen in its proper episode 279 pairing, it has a copyright date of 2022. However, when shown as a part ofThe Tidal Zone compilation special, it has a copyright date of 2023. The episode, ultimately, was produced during the former year.
Episode references[]
- Thesoda commercial from "Sun Bleached" appears in the scene where the robots are driving.
- Both Sandy and Sandroid use a simile in their first moments to show how they can become friends with others, as Sandy does it in "Tea at the Treedome."
- When SpongeBot is thinking on a plan to stop the robot swarm, the TV dinner from "Squid Noir" appears.
Cultural references[]
- The song that SpongeBot sings is a reference to the song "Dem Bones."
- Sandroid is a parody of the titular floating head from the1974 filmZardoz, bearing a similar design, the same facial expression, and even similar lines.
Errors[]
- Some letters in the title card have their lines poorly cropped.
- After RoboRube closes his head, his mouth disappears for a frame.
- The Mrs. Puff robot appears on Sandroid's right leg as she emerges from the water: however, in the next shot, she can be seen standing on the beach.
- The "RobotInc" Incidental 39 also appears on Sandroid's left arm as she emerges from the water: however, in the next shot, he can be seen standing on the beach.
- The number of robots chasing after SquidBot and RoboGary is inconsistent; at first, there were only 9 of them, but in the scene where they are approaching GrandPat, one is missing (although he might be simply obscured from the view). After they jump in the lagoon, one additional robot appears, and when Sandroid captures them, there are suddenly enough to be assimilated into a giant body, despite the lagoon clearly being empty in many shots.
- Despite the "RobotInc" Incidental 39 selling robo dogs, his stand is called "Hot Dogs."
- RoboRube is on Sandroid's torso but in the next scene, he is missing from the torso.
- When the "RobotInc" incidentals get into a collision in downtown Binary Bottom, the "RobotInc" Incidental 7's head is colored faded yellow like her dress, but when the "RobotInc" incidentals get up and form an angry mob, her head changes back into its natural bluish-gray color.
