TheWii U is the first eighth-generationNintendo home console and the successor to the Wii. Officially revealed on7 June 2011 and released on18 November 2012, it is the console where theSplatoon series eventually made its debut starting withSplatoon. Despite being met with mixed-to-positive critical reception, the Wii U was a commercial disappointment for Nintendo, selling 13.56 million units as of 2019[1] and becoming Nintendo's lowest-selling home console to date. Production on the system officially ended in January 2017, just before it was followed by theNintendo Switch on3 March 2017.

Features

The Wii U system, like the handheldNintendo DS and3DS systems, comes with a second screen, known as theWii U GamePad. It was exclusively marketed as a home console due to how the GamePad cannot be taken on the go. One of its main features is the GamePad's large 480p touch screen, which allows for a different display from what is on the TV (displayed at up to 1080p HD) and through which some games can be played on the GamePad alone. TheWii U Pro Controller is also compatible to provide more traditional controls. The Wii U offers backwards compatibility with all Wii games and controllers, including theWii Remote andWii Classic Controller, and has a service known asNintendo eShop, where digital versions of games can be purchased. These, along withSplatoon, include some classic Nintendo titles which are played on the Virtual Console.

The Wii U was capable of taking screenshots, but it did not have a dedicated button on the controllers to do so. WhenMiiverse was available, it could be used to take and upload 800x450 screenshots. The Wii U Internet Browser can take and upload 960x540 screenshots, and the Internet Browser is currently the only built-in way to take screenshots on the Wii U.[2] The screenshot feature was only practical to use during single-player missions or in hub areas or menus, as attempting to take a screenshot during live multiplayer gameplay could result in a disconnection. The steps to take a screenshot are as follows:

  1. While playing a software title, and on a screen you wish to upload, press the HOME Button to pause the game and access the HOME Menu.
  2. Select the Internet Browser icon to launch the Internet Browser.
  3. Visit the site you wish to upload a screenshot to.
    • You can upload screenshots to many sites that allow image uploads, including social media sites, image hosting sites, and web forums.
  4. On the website you visited, select the appropriate option to upload an image.
    • If you receive an error message stating an image is not available, this indicates the software or gameplay sequence does not support the screenshot feature.
  5. On the GamePad, tap on the image you wish to upload (either the image from your TV or GamePad).
  6. The upload process should begin. The final upload steps will vary depending on the site you are using.
