Wave Goodbye is asong by theSquid Sisters. It is played during the endcredits ofSplatoon 3's story mode,Return of the Mammalians.
Description
Wave Goodbye is an atmospheric J-pop song that starts with somber, drawn-out melodies that build up to an energetic chorus. Following the chorus, the intensity drops again, and the Squid Sisters pause singing as unidentified human-sounding vocals sing the lyrics toCalamari Inkantation. The Squid Sisters then harmonize with this voice singing their own lyrics before transitioning out of the interlude and back into the pre-chorus.
The major mode of the track (as opposed to the relative B minor) is implied harmonically but it does not fully resolve to the tonic D major until the interlude, around 3:19 in theSplatune 3 release. This keeps the tension and momentum up throughout the first half of the track, as it never feels securely anchored in the major key.
According to the interview withMarie,Marina, andBig Man inSplatune 3,Callie wrote the lyrics toWave Goodbye, wanting to write a song about her feelings toward her distant ancestors and the planet, andShy-Ho-Shy then wrote the melody.
Wave Goodbye plays during thecredits sequence ofReturn of the Mammalians inSplatoon 3. Before the credits play, the release of the song is reported on byDeep Cut in a specialAnarchy Splatcast broadcast;Frye initially claims to be "big MAD about it", but the three of them then realize that Agents 1 and 2 are in fact the Squid Sisters and decide to play the song.
The credits ofSplatune 3 reveal thatWave Goodbye is the only new track in the game byShiho Fujii, the original sound team member responsible for the music of the Squid Sisters. The other new Squid Sisters songs,Tomorrow's Nostalgia Today andLiquid Sunshine (as well as the arrangement ofCity of Color (2023)), were written and produced byYumi Takahashi. This is alluded to in the interview with Marie, Marina, and Big Man, which states that, in-universe, Shy-Ho-Shy producedWave Goodbye whereasYou★Me producedTomorrow's Nostalgia Today.
