Inkling fighter

Main article:Inkling (Super Smash Bros. Ultimate)

Inkling appears as a new fighter inSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate. They are described on the Super Smash Bros. Blog as follows: "Attacks with a variety of weapons. Covering opponents with ink leads to more and more damage—plus these Inklings are really fashionable!"[2] They utilize theSplattershot,Splat Roller,Splat Bomb,Inkbrush,Blaster, andSlosher for various attacks in their moveset, in addition to theKiller Wail for their Final Smash. Inkling switches to squid form while dashing and spot-dodging, and utilizes it offensively in their pummel, throws, and up special (theSuper Jump).

Although the costumes are designed according toSplatoon's available gear and character customization options, several of them display oddities:

  • The costumes based on the Inkling Boy and Agent 3 both have blue eyes, but Agent 3's are significantly more vibrant. Excluding theblue eyes with colored pupils added inSplatoon 3, only one variation of blue eyes exists.
  • The lime and purple Inkling costumes have purple eyes, and the turquoise costume has teal eyes. These eye colors were only added inSplatoon 2.
  • The indigo Inkling has matching indigo eyes. To this day, noSplatoon game features this hue.

Mii Fighters can wear custom outfits based onSplatoon characters. The Inkling costume returns fromSuper Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS andWii U, appearing as the default orange female or blue maleInklings fromSplatoon depending on gender, with the outfit section being exclusive to Mii Gunners and wielding the Splattershot. The standalone green Inkling Squid hat also returns. Additionally, aSplatoon 2 costume debuts, appearing as the default pink female or green male Inklings fromSplatoon 2 depending on gender. Again, the outfit section is exclusive to Mii Gunners and they wield theSplatoon 2-design Splattershot.

Additionally, some paid DLC costumes were sold separately. Costumes based onCallie andMarie were released on30 June 2020 and allow Mii Fighters to dress as theSquid Sisters' normal outfits. The Callie outfit is exclusive to Mii Brawlers and the Marie outfit is exclusive to Mii Gunners, wielding theHero Shot. On19 October 2021, anOctoling wig (wearing theOctoleet Goggles) and aJudd hat were also released.

The Squid Sisters also appear as an Assist Trophy, an item that helps the player defeat opponents. Upon being summoned, they set up a dance stage and the camera slowly zooms in as they perform a song, restricting the playable area. One playablestage fromSplatoon,Moray Towers, is also a stage inSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate. In similar fashion to its original appearance, it is constructed mostly of ramps and features Judd andLi'l Judd in the background, judging the winning fighters. It includes many original and remixed versions ofSplatoon series music that play while players are fighting on the stage. If a song from a Splatfest is playing, the stage will be set at night, though its layout does not change.

amiibo functionality

TheInkling amiibo figure released for the game.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate supports a wide variety ofamiibo figures, including a majority of the figures from theSplatoon series. A new figure based on theInkling fighter was released alongside the game.

amiibo figures that correspond to playable characters (including those outside theSuper Smash Bros. amiibo series) function as Figure Players, which are computer-controlled characters whose behavior and customizations are saved to the amiibo figure. The Figure Player learns from the fighters it fights against, leveling up in the process (up to level 50), and can also be fedSpirits to modify their stats. After battling for a bit, amiibo can bring gifts to the player. Gifts can include a random Novice/Advanced class-Spirit, a small amount of gold, a small amount of SP, Snacks of all sizes, Spirit Board items, and a random unlockable song. The more it battles, the more gifts it will have to bring back.

The following amiibo figures are recognised as Figure Players. While most of them will have the Figure Player default to Costume 1, any of the Inkling Boy figures will instead default to Costume 2.

The following amiibo figures reward Spirits of the corresponding characters the first time they are scanned:
