Appearance
The Squid Hairclip is a hairclip of the "S" from theSplatoon logo on it with a pair of cartoon eyes from the same logo at the top. How it is worn depends on the wearer'shairstyle.
- Topknot, Hipster, and Cornrows (Inkling): The Squid Hairclip lacks the metal clip and is worn on the hairstyle's knot, including in the originalSplatoon where only the Topknot hairstyle is available for Inkling boys.
- Other hairstyles: The Squid Hairclip is worn on the side of the hair above the wearer's left ear, although its exact placement varies between hairstyles. InSplatoon 2, it lacks the metal clip when worn on masculine hairstyles.

The School Hairclip is available through use of any generation of theInkling Girl amiibo.

The Squid Hairclip comes withSwim Speed Up as the primaryability. As a 2-star item, the Squid Hairclip comes with two additional slots for secondary abilities, which may be increased to a maximum of three slots with aSuper Sea Snail or 30,000 cash for each slot. Sinceit is made by theamiibogear brand, it has equal chances to roll any secondary ability.

To unlock the Squid Hairclip, the player must play the first set of missions from the Inkling Girl amiibo:
- 1.Octotrooper Hideout — Catch That Zapfish!
- 2.Lair of the Octoballs — Splat Your Way to the Top!
- 3.Rise of the Octocopters — Leap to Victory!
- Boss 1: Squish, Squash, Smash...The Mighty Octostomp!
The Squid Hairclip is received after completing the boss challenge.

The Squid Hairclip comes withSwim Speed Up as the primaryability. As a 1-star item, the Squid Hairclip comes with two additional slots for secondary abilities. The star level may be increased withSuper Sea Snails for 1 (second), 5 (third), 10 (fourth), or 20 (fifth) Super Sea Snails per star. Increasing the star level to 2 stars will add another secondary ability slot for a total of three slots. Increasing the star level beyond 2 stars will increase the gear experience gained by a cumulative 3.333…% up to 10% additional experience at 5-star level. Sinceit is made by theamiibogear brand, it has equal chances to roll any secondary ability.
