TheSplattercolor Screen is aspecial weapon inSplatoon 3. It is a canister which creates a large, mobile ink sheet that can give opponents slight damage and a visual effect.

Appearance

The Splattercolor Screen, when activated, generates a clear canister filled with swirled ink, resembling a bottle of bubble solution. When thrown, the canister deploys a large, thin arch-shaped bow of the user's ink color which inks the ground as it slowly moves forward. The ink is held in shape by two plastic structures resembling straws on either side. The ink screen also produces bubbles as it moves. The ink screen has a swirled or marbled pattern and translucent portions which look like the product of the Japanese paper marbling techniquesuminagashi (墨流し).

Splatoon 3

The Splattercolor Screen was first added toSplatoon 3 inChill Season 2023 (version 6.0.0).

When activated, the user will produce a small canister that can be thrown with to produce the sheet on impact. Once the sheet spawns, it inks the ground directly under itself. After spawning, it takes 1 second for the sheet to start moving, and 5 more seconds for the sheet to reach the full speed of 0.04 units per frame. Every 45 frames, the sheet will produce droplets at preset locations. The sheet lasts for about 9.33 seconds.

While the sheet is active, enemies passing through it will take 40.0 damage and trigger the visual effect, causing the screen to darken and become monochromatic for 6 seconds. The visual effect is not directly tied to whether the player actually takes damage and cannot be avoided by armor (for example from theSquid Roll), but can be avoided by moving through the sheet with full invincibility (for example, while riding theReefslider).

Additionally, although the Splattercolor Screen is not actually a solid object, the opaque parts are still treated as such for the purpose ofThermal Ink andHaunt. Consequently, any enemies affected by these abilities may be seen through these parts of the sheet. After health bars were added in11.0.0, having an enemy's Splattercolor Screen blocking direct line-of-sight or having the visual effect will stop you from seeing an opponent's health bar.

Quotes

Here's Ballistics to show off a newspecial that probably could have helped your team in theSplatfest.

It's called theSplattercolor Screen, and it forms a massive wall! Now, anyone can walk through the wall, but enemies that do so will lose the ability to see color.

— @SplatoonNA on Twitter[1]
Not quite a shield but unlike any other offensive weapon, this device produces a large, slowly moving sheet when you press to deploy. Enemies who touch the sheet will take damage and briefly lose the ability to perceive color! Anyone who even LOOKS upon the sheet will be mildly disturbed.

Translation notes

  1. It is currently not certain whatPLED is an abbreviation for but it is possible in reference topolymer light-emitting diodes.
  2. Fromunsichtbar ("indiscernible") andBarriere ("barrier").Unsichtbar usually translates to "invisible", but the less common translation "indiscernible" better reflects the distinguishing issues caused by the Splattercolor Screen's grayscale effect.
  3. Frompantalla ("screen") andtinta ("ink").
