TheSplatfest Tee is a piece ofclothing in theSplatoon series.

InSplatoon, it is a 3-star item produced bySquidForce and comes with the primaryabilitySpecial Saver. It is only available between the announcement and conclusion of aSplatfest, and requires the players to pick a side in the Splatfest. It cannot be ordered from another player.

InSplatoon 2, it is a 3-star item produced bySquidForce and comes with the primaryabilityAbility Doubler. It is only available between the announcement and conclusion of aSplatfest, and requires the players to pick a side in the Splatfest. It cannot be ordered from another player.

InSplatoon 3, it is a 2-star item produced bySquidForce and comes with the primaryabilityAbility Doubler. It is only available between the announcement and conclusion of aSplatfest, and requires the players to pick a side in the Splatfest. It cannot be ordered from another player.

InSplatoon 2, theSplatfest Tee Replica became available for all players to wear at any time from version5.0.0 onward after the end of Splatfests; it is made by the same brand and has the same main ability as the regular Splatfest Tee.

Appearance

The Splatfest Tee's base design is a simple short-sleeved T-shirt accompanied by a plasticevent wristband worn on the right hand. The Tee's color as well as the graphics on the front and back change to reflect theSplatfest team the wearer has chosen. The per-team graphics feature the related team icons andtext. The per-team shirt color typically closely matches the related team'sink color, whereas the wristband dynamically changes color according to the player's currently active ink color. Each Splatfest event features a different Splatfest Tee design per team.

At the left side of the Splatfest Tee's hem is a small white tag with theSquidforce logo in black. On the upper back of the shirt is SquidForce's name in white squid language text. Both the SquidForce logo and name are additionally written out on the accompanied wristband.

The Splatfest Tee designs are static and do not change to match the player's ink color. In scenarios resulting in the use of alternate ink colors that don't match the relevant Splatfest team colors, such as ifColor Lock is used during Splatfest Battles or if players on the same team go against one another in amirror match, the Splatfest Tee design will not change.

The generic design inSplatoon 2.

The Splatfest Tee features a generic grey "default" design in certain special cases:

  • On theEquip screen.
  • In cases of beingmatched with another player from a differentregion where a region-exclusive Splatfest event was upcoming, and that player was wearing a Splatfest Tee. Such players may also appear inhubs.
  • In the brief period after Splatfest events where the Splatfest Tee may still be worn by players present in a hub.
  • When disconnected from the internet, wherein the related hubs will revert to their normal appearances as if no Splatfest event is occurring. The player would need to reconnect to the internet by going to theLobby in order to re-load the Splatfest and reinstate the Splatfest Tee's appearance.

Splatoon

Splatfest Tee designs inSplatoon feature flat colors and two different graphics based on the related team icon and illustrations between the front and back. The wristband glows in the dark.

This version's default Splatfest Tee design is deep grey featuring theSquid Sisters' Splatfest emblem on the front and on the left sleeve.

Splatoon 2

Splatfest Tees inSplatoon 2 are similar to theirSplatoon incarnation, with some key differences: the left sleeve features eitherPearl orMarina's emblem depending on which team the player chose, the illustration graphics are now typically the same between front and back sides, the SquidForce tag along the hem is instead triangular, and the SquidForce name rendered in squid language text seen on the shirt's back now glows in the dark.

This version's default Splatfest Tee design is deep grey featuringOff the Hook's Splatfest emblem on the front and on the left sleeve.

Splatoon 3

InSplatoon 3, the solid color of the shirt has been changed to atie-dye pattern and the SquidForce logo hem tag is square; no parts of this version of the Splatfest Tee glow in the dark. Thespecial SplatfestsGrass vs. Fire vs. Water,Power vs. Wisdom vs. Courage,Lightly Salted vs. Consommé vs. Salted Seaweed, andPast vs. Present vs. Future feature alternate non-tie-dye designs.

The back design and right sleeve of the Splatfest Tee changes to feature either theHohojiro,Onaga orManta clan emblems depending on if the player chose Shiver, Frye or Big Man's team, respectively.

As of version5.0.0, players mayadjust their Splatfest Tee into an oversized version.

This version's default Splatfest Tee design features a light grey to deep grey tie-dye design, with a monochrome version ofDeep Cut's Splatfest emblem at the front's center. The back features greyscale renditions of the Hohojiro, Onaga and Manta clan emblems side by side.

The wristbands accompanying the threePast vs. Present vs. Future Splatfest Tee designs uniquely did not dynamically change color based on the player's ink, instead featuring all three of the event's related ink colors.

Splatfest

Upon choosing a team at the Pledge Box inInkopolis Plaza,Inkopolis Square, orSplatsville, the Splatfest Tee was automatically put into the player's inventory. On the days leading up to the Splatfest, it could be equipped and unequipped at will, but was automatically worn for the duration of the Splatfest itself and could not be switched out during that time.Jelonzo,Jelfonzo, orJel La Fleur would comment on this, informing the player that they could not equip any new clothing bought. Once the Splatfest ended, the Splatfest Tee was removed from the player's inventory; when the player returned to the Plaza or Square at the end of the Splatfest or upon starting the game, they automatically wore theBasic Tee,Fresh Octo Tee, or theTri-Shred Tee (Depending on the game and species). Because of this, havingSpyke orMurch re-roll itsabilities is not recommended.

InSplatoon 2, scrubbing the Splatfest Tee with Murch cost onlyCash 2,000 rather than the standardCash 20,000, making it an effective way to build upability chunks quickly. Starting in version4.0.0, the Splatfest Tee continued to gain experience after filling all three slots, awarding a random ability chunk every 7500 points - this only occurred during the Splatfest itself and not in the period of time following the announcement before the event.

The scrubbing discount from the previous game returns inSplatoon 3, again only costingCash 2,000 instead ofCash 20,000 to scrub. Adding Abilities to the Splatfest Tee costs less ability chunks as well: adding a different primary ability costs 6 ability chunks, while adding a non-duplicate secondary ability only costs 3.

Trivia

Ajellyfish inSplatoon 2 wearing a sleeveless Splatfest Tee.
  • Real-life versions of various Splatfest Tees have been produced, either for purchase or as a promotional giveaway, although many were not exact replications of the in-game Tees. These include:
    • Autobots vs. Decepticons: PAX Prime 2015 attendees who participated in Splatfest matches at the Nintendo booth had the chance to obtain real-life versions of the Splatfest Tees for their team. These tees were also given away on social media.[1]
    • Land Food vs. Seafood: Variants of the Splatfest Tees worn for this Splatfest were available for purchase from online magazine Clip!SAGA, as theSaga Prefecture collaborated withSplatoon.[2][3]
    • Pokémon Red vs. Pokémon Green: Splatfest Tees were offered at Pokémon Center stores in Japan the day the Splatfest began.[4]
    • Callie vs. Marie: Splatfest Tees were produced for Japan and the United States. In Japan, these were produced by Editmode and came with a matching wrist band. The default Splatfest Tee design also went on sale at the same time.[5] In the United States, different versions of these Tees with English text were given away at event held concurrently with San Diego Comic Con 2016. They were also given away on social media.[6]
    • Default Splatfest Tees fromSplatoon 2 have been sold at the Nintendo New York store.
    • Splatfest Tees for theSanrio-sponsored Japanese Splatfests were available for purchase, featuringHello Kitty,Cinnamoroll,My Melody, andPompompurin.[7]
    • Chaos vs. Order: Splatfest Tees were able to be purchased internationally via the My Nintendo Store in the days leading up to the Splatfest. They were also sold in-person at the Nintendo New York store.
    • Super Mushroom vs. Super Star: Splatfest Tees were available to purchase internationally starting the day the Splatfest was announced, during the Super Mario 35th Anniversary direct. These were also the first Tees to be put up for sale in South Korea, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.
    • Grass vs. Fire vs. Water: Splatfest Tees were sold online in Japan, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, and Hong Kong. In Japan, customers had to enroll in a lottery for the chance to purchase a Tee. In most regions outside of Japan, Tees were available for pre-order to be delivered at the start of 2023. In the United States, a limited number of Tees were sold at the Nintendo New York store.
    • Power vs. Wisdom vs. Courage: Splatfest Tees were sold online internationally via the My Nintendo Store, as well as in-person at Nintendo stores in New York, Tokyo, and Osaka.
    • Red Bean Paste vs. Custard vs. Whipped Cream: Splatfest Tees were sold on the Japanese 7-Eleven website.
    • Lightly Salted vs. Consommé vs. Salted Seaweed: Calbee hosted a giveaway where winners could get one of 600 Splatfest Tees for this Splatfest. There were 200 Tees per team, 100 of those being in either a size S or L.[8]
    • Past vs. Present vs. Future: Splatfest Tees were available to purchase internationally online and in-person at Nintendo stores in New York, Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto. Matching wristbands were available to redeem with Platinum Points.
  • Splatfest Tee designs have been reused five times:
  • The promotional images forSplatfest Power show the Cats vs. Dogs andRice vs. Bread Splatfest Tees andink colors, despite it having not existed when these Splatfests occurred.
  • InSplatoon, the logo on the default Splatfest Tee is similar to theSquid Sisters' outfits. InSplatoon 2, the default logo is an icon representingPearl andMarina, withInkling text resembling the Japanese word "fesu" (フェス), short for "festival".
  • The wristband glows in the dark. InSplatoon, this could only be seen duringSplatfests themselves, as they took place at night. InSplatoon 2, the glow could also be seen during the day if the wearer was in the shade.
  • When anamiibo was used inSplatoon 2 to save a gear loadout that included the Splatfest Tee, it was replaced by theBasic Tee once that Splatfest Tee was no longer available, likely due to it being the only piece of clothing that every player is guaranteed to own.
    • If the player's avatar was anOctoling when doing this, it instead switched to theFresh Octo Tee for the same reason.
    • Loading a Freshest Fit with a Splatfest Tee that is not available would ignore the Tee, not changing the player's current Clothing.
  • InSplatoon 2, Splatfest Tees originally needed 4000, 8000, and 12,000 experience points to level through the three slots, for a total of 24,000. However, some players were scrubbing only after filling the first slot, getting a new chunk every 4000 XP. To encourage full slot leveling, this was changed in version1.3.0 to three equal tiers of 7500 each, for a total of 22,500.
    • A similar thing happened inSplatoon 3: At launch, the first ability needed 2000, the second ability needed 8000, and the third ability needed 14000. However, inversion 3.0.0, it was changed so that every ability needed 7500.
  • InSplatoon 2,jellyfish have a sleeveless version of the Splatfest Tee (which is inaccessible to players) in addition to the original style.
  • According toThe Art of Splatoon, the Splatfest Tees are government-funded since Inklings tend to donate coins as they do not want to deal with the leftover change.
  • The Splatfest Tees for theSplatoon 2Squid vs. Octopus Splatfest feature writing that is similar to the kanji for squid (烏賊) and octopus (蛸), even though in-game, the terms "squid" and "octopus" when referring to Inklings and Octolings are written in katakana (イカ and タコ, respectively). This could be because the Splatfest was regarding "ancient creatures" (with squids and octopuses now evolved into Inklings and Octolings) as seen in the opening dialogue.
    • Something similar happened in theChaos vs. Order Splatfest, which featured writing similar to English, with CHAO (Chaos) and ORDR (Order). This and Squid vs. Octopus were the only ones with some sort of human writing on the shirt.
  • The writing on the back of the shirt differs from Splatfest to Splatfest. If it was worn when a Splatfest is not going on, the shirt reads 'Which do you like'.
  • This piece of gear was available in theSplatoon 3 Splatfest World Premiere, and was the only available clothing during the event.
  • The Splatfest Tee cannot be placed in alocker, as it does not show up in the player's locker inventory.
  • After a Splatfest ends inSplatoon 3, the player reverts to wearing theTri-Shred Tee, likely due to it being the only piece of clothing every player is guaranteed to own.
