I amOrder itself. A consciousness generated from the processes of many who yearn for stability.
— Order introducing itself after the defeat ofMarina Agitando
Order redirects here. For other uses, seeOrder (disambiguation).

Order, also known asOverlorder as a boss and asSmollusk after being defeated for the first time, is the titular main antagonist ofSplatoon 3: Side Order. It is an AI born from the Memverse developers' desire for a never changing world and wishes to bring the world into a perfect state of order. It is the overseer of theSpire of Order, and the final boss fought at30F.

Description

Order resembles a black cloud comprised of glitches and noise, vaguely in the shape of a cartoon proportioned octopus, with a circular mouth akin to a siphon mouth. It has oval eyes with a line straight down the middle, and wisps trailing off the body that resemble tentacles. The exact proportions of the mouth and eyes constantly change with the glitching effect.

Overlorder is an extremely oversized octopus, colored in the same black ink asJelletons. All of its facial features are unnatural, as for example, it has two red∞-balls for eyes. The ink it is covered in is also transparent, with white "bones" inside, similar to the Jelletons.

Once it is defeated, Order is forced into a minuscule form that is dubbed "Smollusk", due to Pearl greatly damaging Overlorder during the climax with aKiller Wail-like scream. As Smollusk, Order resembles an octopus paralarva with black tinted tentacles, albeit with mature octopus eyes. After Order's first defeat, "Smollusk" remains the name used for the character, even when it takes on its Overlorder form again in rematches.

Gameplay

When fought at 30F, Order is in its Overlorder form. Similar toMarina Agitando, all phases consist of Overlorder surrounded by a barrier and several tentacle-likeportals. Different types of Jelletons can spawn based on which floors the player has chosen during the run. Once all portals are destroyed, the barrier falls down, exposing it to attack and enabling progression to the next phase. There are three phases fought, each with increasing difficulty.

Overlorder can use various attacks in all phases at random intervals. An alert sound plays and red arrows appear to telegraph its attacks, which may also be accompanied by dialog taunts. These include:

  • Overlorder shoots several large, slow-moving globs of ink at the player.
  • Overlorder fires three continuousSting Ray beams that track the player.
  • Overlorder spawns a swarm ofJelletons from its mouth.
  • Overlorder propels fourReefsliders consecutively.
  • Overlorder launchesSuper Chumps around the arena.
  • Overlorder sends its tentacles out underneath the player. This will launch the player into the air on contact, possibly sending them off the arena. Following this, the tentacles fall toward the ground, away from Overlorder and explode as they hit the ground.

Phases 1-3

In the first phase, there are two stationary portals which spawn Jelletons. In the second phase, there are three portals. These portals begin to move as they take damage, making it more difficult to fire at them. In the third phase, there are four portals which also move as they take damage; this is the last phase when fighting Overlorder in a rematch.

In the initial Overlorder battle,New World Order plays during these phases. In rematches,Short Order plays instead.

Phase 4

This phase is only fought if the player has not cleared the Spire before. After the player clears the Spire for the first time, a glass case containing aKiller Wail speaker appears to the viewer's right of theelevator entrance upon entering thefoyer, allowing the player to replay this phase by interacting with it and selecting "Remember Epic, Vibrant Battle". During this phase, saving and suspending does not cost a Life like it does normally, and beingsplatted simply restarts the phase.

In this phase, Overlorder removes all the color chips from the player's Palette. However, each portal contains special "Spectrum" chips that the player can obtain by destroying them, with each portal giving the benefits of all of a particular tone's chips when destroyed. After all six portals are destroyed, the player can use Pearl's "Color Wail" (based on theKiller Wail 5.1) with thespecial weapon button to finally defeat Overlorder. Alternatively, the player can defeat Overlorder without using the Color Wail by simply continuing to attack it until it is defeated; doing so results in slightly different dialogue.[1]

During this phase,Spectrum Obligato ~ Ebb & Flow (Out of Order) plays. Once all portals have been destroyed, opening the Palette menu and interacting with each chip inboustrophedon order sounds out the chorus ofEbb & Flow.[2]

Quotes

The following text is quoted from theJelleton Field Guide.

Order was vicious. But we're no

Eight and Pearl could do it. And so
we returned to the real world,
happily ever after.
Marina

Wasn't that li'l Order cuuute?
I wonder where it went.
Pearl
(1)
That's the last we'll see of THAT

Conclusion
Even here, we stay Off the Hook!

Trivia

  • Order is the first final boss in theSplatoon series that does not come from the distant past, being an infant compared toDJ Octavio,Commander Tartar, andMr. Grizz.
  • Overlorder has 13 different boss titles that can be shown at the start of its battle. The first time it is fought after thecredits, its title is "The One Slight Catch", advancing to the next title in the next run only when the player uses a Palette different to that of their current run. For example, after fighting "The Second Restoration" with a new Palette, players will face "History Threepeats" in their next run even when using a repeated Palette, but they will not face "The Foursaken Remnant" until after defeating "History Threepeats" using a new Palette. The first ten rematch titles have a numerical motif that match the rematch number.
    • Initial title: "The Magistrate of Order"
    • First rematch title: "The One Slight Catch"
    • Second rematch title: "The Second Restoration"
    • Third rematch title: "History Threepeats" (a pun on "history repeats")
    • Fourth rematch title: "The Foursaken Remnant" (a pun on "the forsaken remnant")
    • Fifth rematch title: "Pent-Up Frustration" (comes from "penta", meaning five)
    • Sixth rematch title: "Back to Basix" (a pun on "back to basics")
    • Seventh rematch title: "Acsept No Substitutes" (a pun on "accept no substitutes")
    • Eighth rematch title: "Increasingly Despereight" (a pun on "increasingly desperate")
    • Ninth rematch title: "Saturnine Squatter"
    • Tenth rematch title: "Tentacled Troublemaker"
    • Eleventh rematch title: "Last Order"
    • Final rematch title after clearing with all Palettes: "Obstructive Ordeal"
  • In the English version of the game, Smollusk speaks byhaving its L's and R's replaced with W's in a manner that can be considered childlike, to further portray its smaller and weaker nature as well as the fact that it had only recently been "born".

Etymology

Overlorder is a portmanteau of "overlord" and "order".

Smollusk is a portmanteau of "small" (or possibly "smol", internet slang for "small" that also implies cuteness) and "mollusk".

Overlorder gains new boss titles containing numerical puns for the first ten rematches, with the digit count going up by one after each rematch where a new Palette is used. These puns use English digit names, with two exceptions: "Pent-Up Frustration" comes frompente (Greek for "five"), while "Acsept No Substitutes" comes fromseptem (Latin for "seven").
