Nintendo Direct
Nintendo Direct is a series of online presentations hosted by various staff members ofNintendo several times a year to make announcements about various subjects across the company. On several occasions,Splatoon games have been mentioned and revealed in these videos.
Splatoon
Nintendo Digital Event @ E3 2014
During this presentation on10 June 2014,Splatoon was announced to be released. A trailer, featuring various multiplayer aspects, was shown, as well as a short interview withTsubasa Sakaguchi,Hisashi Nogami, andYusuke Amano in Japanese. Various elements in this trailer were either altered or not included in the final version of the game.
Nintendo Direct: 5 November 2014
During this presentation, the first trailer ofSplatoon'sstory mode was shown. It debuted various types ofOctarians and showcased many levels.
Nintendo Direct: 1 April 2015
During this presentation, theSplatoonamiibo series was announced, as well as the release date of the game.
Splatoon Direct
On7 May 2015, a few weeks beforeSplatoon's launch, a Nintendo Direct specifically about it was made. This presentation went into detail about various aspects of the game, some of which had never been seen before.
This Direct revealed many important characters, includingCap'n Cuttlefish, theSquid Sisters and theirSplatfests, and the shopkeepersAnnie,Moe,Jelonzo,Crusty Sean,Sheldon, andSpyke, alongside their shops inBooyah Base. It also revealed theUrchin Underpass,Arowana Mall, andSaltspray Rigstages, as well as a glimpse of the upcomingCamp Triggerfish.
TheSplattershot,Aerospray MG,Jet Squelcher,Blaster,Splat Roller,Dynamo Roller,Inkbrush,Splat Charger,Splatterscope, andE-liter 3K were also shown off in depth, alongsidesub weapons andspecial weapons.
Other newly-revealed topics includedgearabilities and the use ofSuper Sea Snails, theSplatoon Global Testfire available the next day, andarcade machine mini-games. It was also announced that Inkling costumes would be available inSuper Smash Bros. 4 from the next day.
Nintendo Direct: 12 November 2015
During this presentation, version2.3.0 was shown off, including the new gear. Two new stages,Museum d'Alfonsino andMahi-Mahi Resort were shown.
Nintendo Direct: 3 March 2016
During this presentation, version2.6.0 was announced, and many new weapons in theSheldon's Picks range were announced.
Splatoon 2
Nintendo Switch Presentation
After being previously teased at theNintendo Switch reveal trailer on20 October 2016, this presentation on12 January 2017 fully revealedSplatoon 2. It showed off the newSplat Dualies,sub andspecial weapons, the new hub world ofInkopolis Square and hinted at a new single-player campaign. Also showed off various waysSplatoon 2 could be played.
Nintendo Direct: 12 April 2017
During this presentation,Splatoon 2 had its release date announced, as well as a preview ofSalmon Run. A new line of amiibo was announced, as well as confirming that the previous figures would be compatible. However, their functionality was not confirmed.
ARMS Direct
Although revealed as focusing exclusively onARMS, this Direct on17 May 2017 also showed a trailer forSplatoon 2'sstory mode, and the final chapter ofSquid Sisters Stories was released afterwards. New themed accessories were also shown off, such asSplatoon-themedJoy-Con,Switch Pro Controller and carrying case, as well as new bundles. These were not announced in the North American and Australian Directs.
Nintendo Spotlight: E3 2017
This presentation on13 June 2017 briefly talked about theSplatoon 2 World Inkling Invitational that was being held at E3 that year.
Splatoon 2 Direct
This Direct on6 July 2017 looked at the new customization options, the new shops and their owners,Murch, newgear,amiibo functions, provided an overview of the modesRegular andRanked Battle, and revealedLeague Battle. It also included further details onSalmon Run,Octo Canyon, andSplatfests, the reveal ofOff the Hook andSplatNet 2, the announcement of upcoming content updates, including theSplat Brella and theBubble Blower, and the announcement of theSplatoon 2 Splatfest World Premiere.
Nintendo Direct: 13 September 2017
Revealed thatKelp Dome was returning on15 September 2017, whileSnapper Canal and theTenta Brella were revealed as coming in further updates.
Nintendo Direct: 8 March 2018
Showed contents of version3.0.0, including 100 new pieces ofgear, Rank X, new stages such asPiranha Pit,Camp Triggerfish, andWahoo World andCallie appearing inOcto Canyon after finishing the story. Showed off the reveal trailer for theOcto Expansion and the reveal of anewSuper Smash Bros. game in whichInkling would debut as a fighter.
Nintendo Direct: E3 2018
This Direct on12 June 2018 showcased various elements of theInkling's moveset inSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate and revealed theSquid Sisters as a newAssist Trophy.
Nintendo Direct: 13 September 2018
Revealed contents of version4.0.0 and the following updates, including a new stageSkipper Pavilion, new weapons from theKensa Collection, two new sub-weapons (Fizzy Bomb andTorpedo) and two new special weapons (Ultra Stamp andBooyah Bomb).
Super Mario Bros. 35th Anniversary Direct
This Direct on3 September 2020 revealed theSuper Mushroom vs. Super StarSplatfest event taking place to celebrate the35th Anniversary of theSuper Mario Bros. series. It also revealed various merchandise coinciding with the Splatfest including T-shirts and keychains.
Splatoon 3
Nintendo Direct: 17 February 2021
At the very end of this Direct,Splatoon 3 was revealed for the first time, and with a 2022 release window onNintendo Switch. It revealed the new setting ofSplatsville andthe Splatlands alongside a new stage (later namedScorch Gorge), many new customization options,Smallfry, new and returningmain andspecial weapons, including what was later named theTri-Stringer, and new movement options. While hard to spot, theSplat Bomb was also shown to return.
Nintendo Direct: 23 September 2021
Splatoon 3's single-player mode,Return of the Mammalians, was revealed during this Direct, confirming the appearances ofAgent 3, theSquid Sisters,the Captain,Craig Cuttlefish,DJ Octavio,Judd,Li'l Judd, theFuzzy Octarians, andAlterna. In multiplayer,Eeltail Alley, theBig Bubbler, theZipcaster, andC-Side were revealed, as were the names ofScorch Gorge, theTrizooka, theKiller Wail 5.1, and theCrab Tank. The returns ofMuseum d'Alfonsino and several main andsub weapons were also confirmed.
Nintendo Direct: 9 February 2022
This presentation announcedSalmon Run Next Wave forSplatoon 3. The trailer detailed theSockeye Station stage, theFish Stick andFlipper-FlopperBoss Salmonids, the Egg Throw move, and hinted at the appearance of theKing SalmonidCohozuna. Afterwards, the game's "Summer 2022" release window was confirmed.
Splatoon 3 Direct
This Direct on10 August 2022 revealed theHagglefish Marketstage alongside the returns ofHammerhead Bridge,Mahi-Mahi Resort,Inkblot Art Academy,Sturgeon Shipyard,MakoMart, andWahoo World, withFlounder Heights and another new stage (later namedUm'ami Ruins) coming through updates.
Thesplatana class ofmain weapons was announced with theSplatana Wiper, as well as theTacticooler,Wave Breaker, andReefsliderspecial weapons and the return of severalSplatoon 2 specials. It also confirmed the new shops,Naut Couture,Man-o'-Wardrobe,Crush Station, andHotlantis, and their owners, with the return ofMurch.
In terms of battles,Anarchy Battles were confirmed to replaceRanked Battles, new functionality of thetest range was shown alongside the customizablelocker room andSplashtags, as well asTableturf Battles. Additional details were also revealed forSalmon Run Next Wave andReturn of the Mammalians.
InSplatsville,Crab-N-Go was shown off with the returns ofthe Shoal,Photo Mode, andrecon.SplatNet 3 and newamiibo figures were also announced, followed by the confirmation of major updates for two years including major DLC starringOff the Hook. Finally,Splatfests were confirmed to return, hosted byDeep Cut and includingTricolor Turf War battles. TheSplatoon 3 Splatfest World Premiere demo, featuring theRock vs. Paper vs. Scissors Splatfest, was confirmed to be held on27 August 2022 with pre-orders available immediately afterwards.
Nintendo Direct: 13 September 2022
This presentation briefly confirmed theGear vs. Grub vs. FunSplatfest as the first post-launch Splatfest forSplatoon 3 to be held on24 September 2022 at00:00 UTC. It also reconfirmed the existence of future content updates coming soon.
Nintendo Direct: 8 February 2023
This presentation saw the announcement ofSplatoon 3's paid DLC,Splatoon 3: Expansion Pass. The first wave containedInkopolis Plaza and the second wave teasedSide Order. TheExpansion Pass was able to pre-order after the Direct, with the first wave stated to launch in Spring 2023 and the second wave by the end of 2024.
Nintendo Direct: 21 June 2023
This presentation briefly announced theVanilla vs. Strawberry vs. Mint ChipSplatfest as the seventh post-launch Splatfest forSplatoon 3 to be held on15 July 2023 at00:00 UTC. It also reconfirmed theFoggy Notion Challenge. Additionally, the North American version covered Nintendo Live 2023 Seattle including theSplatoon 3 Championship 2023, while the European version covered theSplatoon 3 European Championship 2023.
Nintendo Direct: 14 September 2023
At the start of this presentation, more details were revealed for theSide Order DLC forSplatoon 3. The mode's location of theSpire of Order was shown off alongside its roguelike gameplay withcolor chips,Palettes, andJelleton. The returns ofAgent 8 andPearl were confirmed andAcht was revealed to appear. It was also given a launch window of Spring 2024.
Nintendo Direct: Nintendo Switch 2 – 4.2.2025
During the presentation of theNintendo Switch 2's GameChat,Splatoon 3 was one of the showcased games.[1] The game's compatability with the Nintendo Switch 2 has been confirmed prior on its official website.[2]
