Development notes of Project Memverse in the seventh entry ofMarina's Dev Diary.
This is theMemverse. It's a prototype VR... that is, a virtual reality that I made.
Marina explaining the Memverse

TheMemverse is a virtual world as a part of★Dramatic Days in Orderland★. It features an uncolored version ofInkadia and it serves as the mission hub forSplatoon 3: Side Order.

It contains theOrder Sector,[1] a mysterious colorless world resemblingInkopolis Square, inhabited by various sea creatures[2] and governed by its own set of rules.[3]

Description

Based on the design of theOrder Sector, the Memverse resembles an off-white version ofInkadia, drained of color and covered in bleached coral.

It is part ofProject Memverse, created when theChaos vs. OrderSplatfest ended, having the purpose of restoring the memory and thoughts ofSanitized Octarians and primarily contains the Order Sector and theSpire of Order.

Inthe eleventh entry of Marina's Dev Diaries, she names the temporarily-titled Project Memverse "★Dramatic Days in Orderland★."

Story

Marina describing the Memverse.

Inthe first entry of Marina's Dev Diaries, it was mentioned that the idea of Project Memverse originated when theChaos vs. OrderSplatfest ofSplatoon 2 ended with Team Chaos as the winner.Marina came up with this project to assistAgent 8 and all theSanitized Octarians thatKamabo Corporation victimized. The name of the project was not yet finalized. She also preparesOff the Hook's highly anticipated world tour while developing her project.

Inthe eleventh entry of Marina's Dev Diaries, she officially names Project Memverse as "★Dramatic Days in Orderland★." In the same entry, she realizes that theSea-Cucumber Phones, which she was planning to use as entry points into the virtual reality, have a security flaw that could be exploited to pull anyone inside against their will — which is exactly whatOrder ends up doing.

In the events ofSide Order, Agent 8 wakes within it, encountering thePearl Drone; they must ascend theSpire of Order to save Marina in thetutorial. They also metAcht in the Spire.

Jellyfish,Inklings, andOctolings whose minds got trapped into the Memverse, includingAcht on the left.

After completing the tutorial ofSide Order, Marina, who was mind-controlled by Order through aController VM and wired into a large tentacle blob asMarina Agitando, is saved by Agent 8, Acht, andPearl, and starts discussing the issues of the Memverse.

She explains that it is her "prototype virtual reality," and the only things that are "real" are their minds. Marina also reveals that the fuzzy cloud they encountered when rescuing her was Order, which took control of her and hijacked the entire project.

Its ultimate goal is to create "a colorless and changeless world of order," and forcibly connect as many people to it as possible. To keep pulling people into it, Order uses a process calledGrayscaling to neutralize the will of everyone trapped in the virtual world. Anyone who goes through Grayscaling also slowly starts to lose their free will in reality as well, losing the world they had been living in.

Credits

The Memverse as seen in thecredits, with theInkopolis Tower.

After clearing the 30th floor of theSpire of Order for the first time,Agent 8,Off the Hook, andAcht ascend in a glass elevator, where thecredits roll.

During the credits, the Memverse is viewable from the sky, andInkopolis Tower can be seen on the right side of Agent 8.

The credits can be viewed again in theFoyer of the Spire of Order by inspecting a glass box to the right of theelevator containing a rainbowColor Wail speaker, also used to replay the final phase of thefinal boss battle and recall the first time inInkopolis Square (afterversion 7.1.0) using the same speaker.

Trivia

The white appearance of theOrder Sector in the Memverse, with the coral scattered throughout it.
  • The Memverse's completely white appearance, including theOrder Sector, is a deliberate reference tocoral bleaching in the real world.
  • The name "Dramatic Days in Orderland" comes from Marina's personal taste in names, as it shows her love of manga.[4]

Etymology

Mem comes from memory, as withmem cakes; usage of-verse as a suffix comes from "universe" — or possiblymetaverse, a term related to concepts ofvirtual reality, which also derives from "universe".
