Description

Deep Cut serve similar roles inSplatoon 3 to those of theSquid Sisters andOff the Hook in previous games. They provide updates on the currently availablestages andmodes and other news and announcements via their television and radio showAnarchy Splatcast. They also host and perform inSplatfests, with Shiver, Frye, and Big Man each representing one of the three teams in every Splatfest. History

BeforeSplatoon 3

This section isincomplete or is missing information.
You can help the wiki byfilling in the blanks.
Reason:Needs backstory details (middle school info, early songs, etc.)

Six years before the release ofSplatoon 3, the three members were students at the Splatlands Third Junior High School, but they didn't know each other. Shiver and Frye briefly met during recess, then they met Big Man while he was teaching piano practice[2].

Later, due to boredom, Shiver and Frye devised a macabre plan to entertain themselves and the other students, and executed it right during a formal high school ceremony. However, it got out of hand and caused a disaster, ending with the panic of the participants and the destruction of the school. Fortunately, Shiver and Frye escaped unharmed and took Big Man before fleeing[3].

Splatoon 3

This section isincomplete or is missing information.
You can help the wiki byfilling in the blanks.
Reason:More general info needed (Splatfests and Grand Festival, story info onBig Betrayal &Suffer No Fools, etc.

To help the less fortunate inSplatsville,Squid Sisters asked Big Man for a charity song calledLiquid Sunshine, only Big Man hides himself under a secret identity. About a year later, Shiver and Frye find out about the omission and get angry at him, accusing of treason to Splatsville, composing the songBig Betrayal.

Six months later,Off the Hook played a concert in Splatsville, angering Shiver and Frye for trespassing on their territory, thus forming the songSuffer No Fools.

Five months later, due to the growing relationship between Inkopolis and Splatsville, Deep Cut wanted to discuss with Squid Sisters and Off the Hook about a possible reunion, thus forming the supergroupNow or Never Seven, a project that is part ofthe Grand Festival.

Anarchy Splatcast

Anarchy Splatcast isSplatsville's news program, announcing events and updates on new features inSplatoon 3. Deep Cut are the hosts of the program, replacingOff the Hook and their programInkopolis News.

Return of the Mammalians

Deep Cut appear as antagonists inReturn of the Mammalians, appearing shortly afterAgent 3 falls intoAlterna and asserting their right to loot the Splatlands (and thus Alterna, located under it) as bandits, attempting to intimidate theNew Squidbeak Splatoon to no avail before disappearing. Thereafter, being each mistaken for a signal emitted by the missingCuttlefish, Frye, Shiver, and Big Man are fought as the bosses of thesecond, fourth, andsixth sites, respectively. Once each member is defeated, they attempt to escape using a smoke bomb, which always malfunctions and results in sending themselves flying away, revealing a piece of "treasure".

Once all three members are defeated and each piece of treasure is collected, the New Squidbeak Splatoon assemble each of the pieces into a lawnmower-like tool, which theCaptain uses to cut up the Fuzzy Ooze surrounding theAlterna Space Center, getting injured in the process.Agent 1 andAgent 2 agree to go ahead withAgent 3, but before they can, Deep Cut appears, once again trying to reclaim the treasure. To their great shock (and brief incredulity), Callie and Marie acquiesce to their demand to hand over the treasure, stating that they are "done" with it. Touched by their generosity, and now feeling guilty about attempting to fight Agent 3 to the death, they ask Marie to be their boss. She reluctantly accepts, and Deep Cut provides supportive commentary along with Callie and Marie as the player ascends through the Space Center androcket, with Deep Cut also providing the reasons behind their banditry along the way.

At the top of the climb, afterMr. Grizz flies away on the rocket, Deep Cut join forces to propel Agent 3 into space:Frye recruits her eels to form a spiraling launch ramp,Shiver calls toMaster Mega to be Agent 3's transport, andBig Man gives Agent 3 an astronaut helmet-like pair of headphones designed for space. During the mid-point of the battle against Mr. Grizz, Agent 3 is blasted off of the rocket before getting caught byDJ Octavio. Deep Cut and theSquid Sisters watch from the ground and collaborate to performCalamari Inkantation 3MIX, promptingSmallfry's transformation into Hugefry, allowing Mr. Grizz to be distracted as Agent 3 attacks him with DJ Octavio's help.

Once Grizz is defeated, Deep Cut hosts a specialAnarchy Splatcast announcing the return of theSplatsvilleGreat Zapfish. They also discuss the release of a new Squid Sisters single, to which they initially react with indignation before recognizing Callie and Marie on the album cover and expressing their apologies. They then propose that they will go on tour with the Squid Sisters whenever the two like, before acceding to simply playing their new single in the meantime, segueing into thecredits sequence by announcingWave Goodbye.

Trivia

  • Deep Cut is the only idol band:
    • To be a trio.
    • To have a male member.
    • To have a member who is avertebrate.
    • To not have a song that plays in acredits sequence.
    • To not be silhouetted in their album artwork.
  • According to aSplatoon 3 developer interview, Shiver and Frye do most of the singing while Big Man composes the tracks. The same interview also reveals that each of Deep Cut's members are descendants of families that have overseen Splatsville's traditional festival (the predecessor toSplatfests) for generations.[5]
  • Each member draws inspiration from different cultures, demonstrated both by their designs and their solo songs during the first half of Splatfests; Frye is based on Indian culture, Shiver on Japanese culture, and Big Man on Brazilian/Latin culture.
  • Deep Cut'slogo (top right) is based on its Japanese name, resembling a stylized version of the hiragana "すりみ" ("Surimi"), as well as JapaneseSenjafuda.
    • The logo has multiple variants seen inAlterna: a red and blue one that can read as "ふうか" ("Fūka"), a white and green one that can read as "まんた" ("Manta"), and a yellow and green one that can read as "うつほ" ("Utsuho"). These are based on the names of the members of Deep Cut.
  • The circularmon emblem shown at the beginning ofAnarchy Splatcast broadcasts consists of three "み" (Japanese hiragana character read as "mi", an alternate reading of the number three).
  • Similar to the Squid Sisters and Off the Hook, the voice line used for Deep Cut's catchphrase "Catch ya later!" resembles the trio's Japanese name, "Surimi-rengo".
  • The members of Deep Cut wear different stylized Noh masks as part of their thief personas, consisting of a shark, eel, and manta ray mask for Shiver, Frye, and Big Man respectively. The shark and manta ray masks in particular resemble akitsune andhannya mask respectively.
  • According toan interview with Deep Cut seen in the 2022 winterNintendo Magazine, the trio were not close at all during childhood, with Big Man stating that they "knew OF each other", with the members saying hi in passing each time their families got together.
    • In the same interview, it is revealed that the group only started getting closer with one another during middle school, with Frye and Shiver bonding over music and Big Man joining later on.
  • Like the Squid Sisters and Off the Hook, Deep Cut will wave when the player zooms in on them from outside. Their waving animations change after the player completes Return of the Mammalians, with them recognizing the player asAgent 3.
    • This is similar to Off the Hook's waving animations changing when the player is anOctoling inSplatoon 2, as they recognize them asAgent 8.
  • In the Eeltail Alley dialogue during Anarchy Splatcast, it is stated that the trio had deep-fried tofu at food stalls after school together.
  • If Big Man's signature color is considered to be red, Deep Cut's signature colors are the primary colors intraditional color mixing: red, yellow, and blue for Big Man, Frye, and Shiver respectively. If Big Man's signature color is considered to be gray, Shiver and Frye's colors (blue and yellow) are complementary while Big Man's color (gray) is a mix of the colors of the other two usingdigital color mixing.

Etymology

The termdeep cut is used to refer to a more obscure song by a well-known musician. Like the Japanese band name, "cut" in the band's name is also a reference to minced seafood. It may also be because the members take a "cut" of the pay when they steal.

Translation notes

  1. Also a pun on スリーSurī, the Japanese pronunciation of the English word "Three", and みmi, an alternate reading of the number three in Japanese. The suffix for organizations "-連合" was often used in the names of biker gangs, such as "関東連合" (Kanto Rengō).
  2. Alternatively,tri- ("three" prefix) +d'enfer (literally "from hell", but figuratively "terrific" or "a hell of a").
  3. Triglio is a nonexistent masculine form ofTriglia and plays on the assonance between "Trio" andTriglio.
  4. Samhap is a Korean dish with three ingredients. The name also comes from 삼합회 (Triad).
  5. ほな(hona, "Well then")is a Kansai dialect. Shiver speaks with a very pronounced Kyoto variant of Kansai dialect. 解散(kaisan, "dismiss")is also a pun on 海産物 (kaisanbutsu, "seafood").
  6. In this context,de mazzel is slang for "see you later".
  7. The wordmaous /maousse is used almost exclusively to describe the size of fishing catches.
  8. Extension of their catchphrase only used during theSplatoon 3 Splatfest World Premiere,Return of the Mammalians, and theYouTubeSplatoon 3 Direct.
  9. A fish-themed modification ofCi vediamo dopo! ("Catch you later!")
  10. A wordplay on the idiom 后会有期 (hòuhuì yǒuqī , "see you again"). The idiom can be translated differently depending on the context and tone of the conversation. Other translations, used for more serious situations, include "we shall meet again some day" and "hope to see you again some day". The character 有 (yǒu, "have") is replaced by the similar-sounding character 鱿 (yóu, from 鱿鱼, "squid").
  11. A wordplay on the idiom 後會有期 (hòuhuìyǒuqī/qí , "see you again"). The idiom can be translated differently depending on the context and tone of the conversation. Other translations, used for more serious situations, include "we shall meet again some day" and "hope to see you again some day". The character 有 (yǒu, "have") is replaced by the similar-sounding character 魷 (yóu, from 魷魚, "squid").
  12. Haesan is also pun on 해산물 (Haesanmul, "seafood").
