Clickbait is asong performed byC-Side. Introduced inSplatoon 3, it is heavily featured both in-game and in various promotional contexts, and can be considered its "main theme", with these traits being similar to the previous games'Splattack! andInkoming!.
Description
Clickbait is a song fromSplatoon 3 performed byC-Side. The song features vocals, guitar, and bass, and is a multiplayer music track forSplatoon 3.
Clickbait has two versions. One is used forAnarchy Battles andX Battles, while another is used forRegular Battles. Because ofTurf War's time limit of 3 minutes and using its last minute forNow or Never!, the Regular Battle version loops earlier, at around the 1:25 mark, unlike the Anarchy Battle version that loops at around 1:47. The Regular Battle version plays in thejukebox.
The full Regular Battle version was first heard in the Release Date Revealed trailer on22 April 2022.[1]
Remixes and covers
Clickbait (Splash Sessions Demo)
The music which plays during theSplatoon 3tutorial segment can be considered a variation ofClickbait, similar toSplattack! (Jam Sesh) andInkoming! (Cloud Edit). This music is divided into three main phases. The first two phases contain variations. It starts with a sparse drum solo, but more instruments are added in as the music transitions between phases following the player's progression in the tutorial. When the end of the third phase is reached, the final 16 bars are looped continuously. The song also plays in thejukebox, with an additional drum solo intro segment at the start. The version inSplatune 3 instead starts with the normal opening, but inserts the drum solo between the first and second phases, including the cymbal roll for the transition out of the drum solo, and also adds a proper ending at the end of the third phase.
Click "Expand" to see the different versions during the tutorial
Tutorial Phase 1
This phase starts with the intro (shortened compared to the jukebox) with a bass guitar slide. It does not resemble the main melody ofClickbait, but consists of drumming and some guitar phrases. It plays at the beginning of the tutorial up to the cutscene in which the player gets theSplattershot Jr.
Tutorial Phase 1 (Weapon Cutscene)
During the cutscene of getting the Splattershot Jr., the drum track from phase 1 continues to play, but the guitar tracks fade out, turning the music into a drum solo.
Tutorial Phase 2
This phase continues with drumming and guitar phrases but is different from phase 1 while still being different from the main melody ofClickbait. It plays as soon as the player regains control from the previous cutscene. This phase starts with a cymbal roll to help the transition from the previous phase seamlessly.
Tutorial Phase 3
This phase starts out resembling the main melody ofClickbait but with some notes removed. These missing notes are added back in on the second loop. This main melody ofClickbait continues to loop for the rest of this phase, with some variation with the drumming on each loop. It plays as soon as the player swims through the first verticalgrate, then continues until the player completes the tutorial and reaches the train platform, which causes the music to fade out.
Tableturf Main Theme
InTableturf Battle, a chiptune style mix ofClickbait produced byAncho-V Games plays until the last three turns.
Lobby Terminal
When the player is near to or using theLobby Terminal in thelobby or the Grizzco Terminal inGrizzco Industries, a short chiptune cover ofClickbait's intro vocals can be heard indefinitely looping. It is louder the closer the player is to the terminal and plays in addition to the usual background music. In-game, the track plays with a filter that makes it sound like it is playing from a speaker; the version of the track inSplatune 3 andNintendo Music lacks this filter.
Bait & Click
DuringBig Run, a distorted and frenetic cover ofClickbait produced byω-3, titledBait & Click, plays instead ofDeluge Dirge during non-Known Occurrence waves, sampling the original along with ω-3's own instrumentation. This cover can also be heard in the Big Run-related announcements in theSplatoon 3 Direct on10 August 2022 and theChill Season 2022 announcement trailer.[2][3][4]
In tweets fromBaker included in the booklet that comes withSplatune 3, they mention hearingBait & Click in a Big Run and say that it was "so incomprehensible" that they "couldn't help but laugh at it."
Double Clickbait
DuringBig Run at theGrand Splatlands Bowl,Bait & Click is replaced by a self-cover titledDouble Clickbait. UnlikeBait & Click, this song is entirely played in ω-3's own instrumentation instead of being mixed withClickbait samples.
Bait & Click (Mutation)
A cover ofBait & Click is played in theGrizzco building during Big Run, replacingHappy Little Workers - 24/7 Mix. It notably features fewer digital elements and timpani strikes compared to ω-3's other songs as well as being significantly slower, creating a feeling of tension.
Other versions
Clickbait (Demo Tape)
A demo version ofClickbait can be heard on theSquid Research Lab on the Nintendo website.[5] The instruments sound less "live" and the vocals are less filtered. The vocal part exclusive to the Anarchy Battles version can be heard in this demo for a few seconds before it fades away.
The full version of this demo is included inSplatune 3 as track 36 in Disc 3. It does not loop but includes an ending the same way as the"In the Studio" version.
Clickbait (September 2021 Direct)
A shorter demo version can be heard in first part of theSplatoon 3 trailer in theSeptember 2021 Nintendo Direct.[6] While it is very similar to the aforementioned demo version, this version skips some parts of the song, and the beginning of the guitar sequence is cut off by static noises as the trailer transitions to the reveal of theReturn of the Mammalians mode andNine Out of Tension starts playing.
Clickbait (Splatoon 3 Direct introduction)
At the beginning of theSplatoon 3 Direct on10 August 2022[2], the music starts with the first phase ofClickbait (Splash Sessions Demo) with the longer intro, but quickly transitions into the third phase, then transitions into the full version ofClickbait.
Clickbait (Instrumental)
In an unlisted commercial shared by Nintendo of America on9 September 2022,[7] a version of Clickbait without the vocals can be heard playing throughout the video's entire duration.
Clickbait (Live)
The live version ofClickbait performed during theDeep Cut Concert at Nintendo Live 2022 is somewhat similar to the versions used in the actual game. It starts with the Turf War version ofClickbait, then a second loop is played, this time with a different guitar section for the latter half. After that, the song continues with the extra section in the Anarchy Battle version. Following that, an original transition is performed, in which the music gets faster by increasing the tempo twice (first to 184 BPM, then to 188 BPM) to eventually match the tempo ofSea Me Now, then transitions into it at the end.
Clickbait (In the Studio)
The behind-the-scene video uploaded by Nintendo[8][9] uses the Anarchy Battle version of the song, but the musicians play an additional ending section instead of looping like in-game.
Clickbait (Splatune 3)
The version ofClickbait inSplatune 3 is the same as the in-game Anarchy Battle version during the first loop. The second loop features a different guitar section in the middle, similar to the version performed inDeep Cut Concert at Nintendo Live 2022. After the second loop, the track ends with the same ending featured in the behind-the-scene video.
Bait & Click (Chill Season 2022 trailer)
In theChill Season 2022 announcement trailer, another version ofBait & Click was heard. This version is extended from the one in the Big Run announcement.
Samples and interpolations
Inkopolis Plaza train jingle
DuringBig Run, a jingle that uses the melody ofClickbait's opening vocals can be heard playing by the train station inInkopolis Plaza. This replaces the usual melody ofCalamari Inkantation and plays just before the train passes the station rather than when the train has stopped.

Trivia
- Clickbait (Demo Tape) was used as the alarm sound for the Ichiban KujiSplatoon 3 Inkling and Octoling Clock.
- Additionally, the original version ofClickbait is an optional alarm sound forNintendo Sound Clock: Alarmo.
- Tableturf Main Theme is the onlySplatoon 3 song in theNintendo Music app to be featured in two of the game's main playlists as opposed to one (not including "Extended-Playback Collection"), being present in both the "Splatsville" and "Tableturf Battle" playlists.
Etymology
Clickbait refers to a deceptive tactic used on websites to trick someone into clicking on something via misleading thumbnails or titles, as well as a pun on fishing baits.
Bait & Click is a play on the term "bait and tackle", the latter of which refers to equipment used for fishing, and "point and click", a common phrase regarding ease of use in website design. It could also be a play on the term "bait and switch", referring to the song's intro being the first few seconds of the original Clickbait.
Double Clickbait is a pun on "clickbait" and the term "double click", a type of input involving pressing a computer mouse button twice in quick succession. The usage of "double" could also reference the song being an even more chaotic and intense version ofBait & Click.
