Agent 4 is anInkling who is the main player character inSplatoon 2 and the protagonist ofOcto Canyon, in which they are recruited into theNew Squidbeak Splatoon byMarie. While they do not physically appear inSplatoon 3, they are referenced in the game's DLC campaign,Side Order.
Appearance
Agent 4 can have a variety of appearances, depending on the player's choice of gender, skin color, eye color, and hairstyle, as well as their currentink color. They wear an upgraded version of theHero Suit that once belonged toCallie.[3] They can pick upArmor to wear as well. They wield theHero Shot by default but are later able to use a variety of other Hero weapons given to them bySheldon.
Unlike other Agents who are locked to a single hue outside of levels, Agent 4 sports different ink colors depending on which Sector of the Octo Canyon they are in. These ink colors are respectively Marigold inTentakeel Outpost (also used in most promotional art), Green inSuction-Cup Lookout, Soda inBeaker's Depot, Turquoise inSlimeskin Garrison and Night Lumi Green inCephalon HQ.
In official artwork, Agent 4 is frequently depicted as a girl Inkling with the Haircut hairstyle, orange eyes, wearing the upgraded Hero Suit, with Marigold as their signature ink color.
Personality and traits
Agent 4 is described as a silent squid who goes with the flow even in raging waters, and values freedom and flexibility.[4] They also "blast through any situation with ease."[3] Agent 4 did not know who theSquid Sisters were prior to the events of Octo Canyon; according to the officialSplatoon 2 relationship chart andThe Art of Splatoon 2, this is because they do not watch TV as they are busy with extracurriculars.[5][3] Agent 4, as seen in promotional pictures and art, has a diligent work ethic, a lot of confidence, and is extremely free-spirited. Compared toAgent 3, they are shown to be more easygoing and relaxed, yet slightly upbeat in their mannerisms, and they are often depicted as smiling in official art.
Their favorite weapon class appears to beshooters, as evidenced by their signature Hero Shot as well as theirPalette inSide Order. TheOrder Shot is not only the weapon associated with Agent 4's Palette, but also the weapon used by the leading figure ofParallel Canon, who is a direct copy of Agent 4's data in theMemverse.
History

Background
Not much is known about Agent 4's background, except that they came from a town about 40 minutes fromInkopolis by train.[6]
Splatoon 2
After Agent 4 initially arrives in Inkopolis, they are swept up in Marie's quest to save theGreat Zapfish and her cousin Callie. In Octo Canyon, Agent 4 completes various missions to retrieve stolenZapfish, defeating manyOctarians along the way. Eventually, Agent 4 confrontsDJ Octavio and a brainwashed Callie, rescuing the Great Zapfish, freeing Callie, and finally restoring Inkopolis's power supply once again.
Splatoon 3
Agent 4 is mentioned inSide Order, in which it is revealed thatCuttlefish introducedOff the Hook to Agent 4 sometime after the events ofSplatoon 2, andMarina wanted them to be in charge of theMemverse's system security. Before the events ofSide Order,Order took part of Agent 4's soul, turning it into aPalette. According to a developer interview with Famitsu, Order created theParallel Canon boss by using Agent 4's data due to rumors of them being the strongest, with the masked figure being a direct copy of Agent 4 while the helmet wearers are copies of the mask wearer.[7] If the player has save data forSplatoon 2 on theirNintendo Switch, the appearance of Parallel Canon inSide Order matches the appearance of the player's Agent 4 inSplatoon 2.

Trivia
- In theSplatoon manga,Gloves is Agent 4, withSkull andVintage appearing later as Agent 4.5 and Agent 4.25, respectively.
- Marie's dialogue in certain localizations suggests that Agent 4 is "two years older" than Agent 3, suggesting they are 16 to 18 years old. This contradicts the developers' statement that the playable Inklings inSplatoon 2 are around 14 years old.
- Most promotional artwork and screenshots depict Agent 4 to be a girl Inkling with the Haircut hairstyle (the default Inkling appearance inSplatoon 2), which is also seen in-game at the end of the Octo Canyoncredits, while few pieces of concept art and segments of the credits depict a boy version with the Slick hairstyle. This is less variable than the first game, which had multiple official artwork pieces depicting both Inkling girls and boys as Agent 3.
- This is also the default design used forParallel Canon inSide Order if the player does not haveSplatoon 2 save data on theirNintendo Switch.
- An Inkling girl on the artwork forTower Records has the same features commonly used for Agent 4. She is seen with an Octoling that resemblesAgent 8.
- Agent 4 is nicknamed "Four" and "Agent Snore" by Marie.
- TheOcto Expansion art book,HaikaraWalker, includes a mid-development mockup of Agent 4 in a prototype version of theDeepsea Metro.[8]
- InThe Art of Splatoon 3, Agent 4 is shown to be in an early concept forSplatoon 3'sstory mode.
