Description

Acid Hues is an electronic pop song, with both singers trading lines back and forth over a frantic yet energetic beat. It was one of three songs that had a chance of playing duringSplatfestRegular Battles (more specifically, the "Splatfest match" version described below). It can also be heard inSquid Beatz 2 after hearing it in a Splatfest at least once, though this requirement has been removed as ofversion 5.2.0.

The song is alsofeatured in the soundtrack forSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate. By default, it has a chance of playing onMoray Towers, where a special Splatfest version of the stage is used if played. InWorld of Light, it can be heard in the sub-worldPower Plant. It can also be heard in theSounds section in theVault menu. InSplatoon 3, the song can be heard in thejukebox as ofversion 7.0.0 if theSplatoon 3: Expansion Pass has been downloaded.

Lyrics

The booklet included withSplatune 2 gives the official lyrics forAcid Hues. The lyrics are nonsensical; the Japanesehiragana andkatakana simply give the pronunciation. According to a Famitsu interview,^[1] the former is used to indicate Pearl's lyrics inInkling language, whereas the latter is used to indicate Marina's lyrics in Octarian language.

Origin of Order

Origin of Order is a remix ofAcid Hues that can be heard in theSplatoon 3: Side Order DLC whenMarina explains theMemverse, the accidental creation ofOrder, andgrayscaling toPearl andAgent 8 after the first climb ofSpire of Order. Part 1 ofOrigin of Order uses the vocal motifs fromAcid Hues and slightly reorders and rearranges them as an instrumental melody, while part 2 adds such a motif partway through the song. WhenPearl poses near the end of the cutscene this song is played in, a snippet fromAcid Hues's percussion is played.

Other versions

Acid Hues (Splatfest match)

DuringSplatfest matches, the version that plays removes a portion of the vocals from the verse after the song's two-minute mark, presumably to ensure a better transition toNow or Never! at the match's one-minute mark. Therefore, most of the changes can never be heard in-game.

Acid Hues (Live)

Duringlive performances, an extended version ofAcid Hues is used. Although each performance is different due to the live bands, they retain the same strong structure. The singing is also clearer than in the original song. The main difference from the regular version is a new rap verse byPearl, along with a definite ending to the song. A recording of this version from their first live concert atHaicalive at Tokaigi 2018 can be found inOctotune.

AtTentalive at Tokaigi 2019 andHaicalive Kyoto Mix, the song is shortened and a different ending is used to segue intoColor Pulse.

Acid Hues (Grand Festival)

During days one and two of thePast vs. Present vs. Future Splatfest, an extended version ofAcid Hues is performed byOff the Hook at theGrand Festival Grounds, based on the live concert versions of the song, particularly the performance featured in theHaicalive at Tokaigi 2018 concert. Revisiting the Grand Festival Grounds via use ofidolamiibo and selecting the "Colorful Evenings" option will allow the song to be replayed, along with the rest of the set list from the first part of the Splatfest.

Acid Hues (Grand Festival battle)

During thePast vs. Present vs. Future Splatfest, a slightly sped-up version ofAcid Hues with different mixing was played. This might have been a different approach to ensuring a smooth transition toNow or Never!, similarly toAcid Hues (Splatfest match).

Etymology

Acid refers toAcid music, which Off the Hook's music has influences of.Hues likely refers to the colors of ink seen during Turf Wars.
