WELCOME TO (A) LATE NIGHT WITH CONAN THROWBRIEN, A TURN-BASED DICETHROWER


here's how you play:

1. Player Turn

Every turn you choose a JOKE TOPIC CARD and roll an initial d6. To play cards, drag them onto the mic. The up-facing side is added to your JOKE DELIVERY score. Then you pick a joke CATEGORY CARD, and roll a DELIVERY DIE. The characteristics of this die will depend on the chosen category. Aim for as high a score as possible (and higher than the audience's score!) without going over 13.


2. Audience Turn

Next, the audience rolls theirSKEPTICISM DIE and reacts. Their reaction ranges from dead silence to riotous laughter. The round ends after the audience ends their turn.


3. Rounds

The game has up to 3 rounds (of three turns each). A round ends when someone busts with a score above 13, at the end of turn three, or when you decide to end the joke (which becomes an option at the start of turn 2 or 3).


4. Scoring & Guests

The difference between your score and the audience's score is added (on a win) or subtracted (on a loss) to yourNIELSON RATING. In the case of a bust, the Nielson rating changes by the amount over 13. At the end of the game, your finalNIELSON RATING determines the guest who appears. The higher the score, the better the guest. There are over 20 unique guests.

whenever i try to launch the game, it's just a white screen. i'm using the itch launcher if that helps

Me too, I have a Intergrated GPU, but I'm only using my actual dedicated card, I don't have Edge installed either

I'm 46yo; been playing vidya since pong. This is one of the most original (and hilarious) games I've ever played! Kudos, Dev!

I love this! If they do sue, you have a great premise for a game about an up and coming comedian on a journey to be a late-night talk show host. 

In disbelief at how good the voice sfx in this game are. Breath-taking experience overall

I’m not good enough at this game, but I hope there is an ending where the show is cancelled due to Jay Later’s meddling.

Super fun game the art is great, the game plays great. Though the controls are a little tricky. But aside from that great game, great concept, great style. 

Fun little game :) My only constructive criticism is that it's a bit tough to drop things on the mic sometimes. Maybe make the item change in appearance a little when it is correctly over the mic

this is a fair point, and you're not the only one to say it. I think it's a matter of the cards needing to be big to describe their content, but then they end up weirdly obscuring the mic itself.


aybe some glowing effect or a more generous hitbox would help.. anyway cheers!

updated with a couple small fixes and rebalanced the EQ of the intro track to make it less ear shattering (though still sufficiently ear shattering)

Hi spelafort! When I launch I get a window open and just a white screen, am I missing a step? excited to play!

I'm sorry, but I'm really not sure what could be causing that. I've tried it on many devices, browsers and platforms and it's more or less always just worked!

This is happening to me too. I'm using Microsoft Edge and it doesn't seem to be working.

I'm sorry, but I'm really not sure how to troubleshoot this one. Edge works fine on both of my devices. Some googling around tells me that it might be related to using Intel integrated video cards. Might be worth updating your drivers (or better yet: switching to non-integrated GPU if possible) and trying again.

I'm using a dedicated GPU and still getting this issue

This is a really great little game. I wish I had more time to play so that I could see more combinations of topics and follow-ups!

i could potentially be misunderstanding the card, but when I use "banter" and one of my dice matches one of the audience die, my score remains the same and does not get set to 13 like the card says it should

I've been trying again this morning and I'm sorry to say I'm having a hard time reproducing this. I do appreciate you letting me know, though, and I'll keep my eye on it!

this game was fun. I can see how it wouldn't be for everyone but I really enjoyed it. I could see myself playing this for a good while on a long night at work.

was unplayable. slow and laggy, unsure what happened

Music at the Instruction page 8s incredibly annoying.

Also, is the game supposed to end with the "change the channel card" and then after that the screen goes into the colored stripes (don't know how or what they are called)?

A lot of this is magnificent, but I really, really want to throw the dice myself. At the moment, it feels like I'm not the one playing the game. Just a click on them would do wonders.

I'd considered this, but worried it would've felt too fussy with the extra click (and the extra 'type' of interaction as well)

I broke it (3x) by getting a bust on Wordplay.

Also, when the audience busts, my Nielsen rating seems to go up by inconsistent amounts.

what platform/browser? Having a hard time recreating this..

I just recreated it on my iPhone (Safari). I used "Dark" to force the audience to roll a die, then they busted and their score was revealed. I think my Nielson rating should have gone up by 1, but instead it went up by 4.

EDIT- I think I misunderstood what was happening here. See my post below.

OK I've spotted the issue in my code. I'll upload the new version ASAP. Appreciate the bug report :)
