Tariff laws can be sweeping, affecting entire industries—and countries—with the stroke of a presidential pen. And they can be just as quickly increased, or removed, causing increased confusion. But what is sometimes forgotten in the macro-economics of tariffs are the stories from small and medium-sized businesses. Beyond the monetary toll, how can one run a business amid such uncertainty?

Luxury label Lafayette 148 is one such business struggling to work through the chaos. The company still has 95 percent of its production coming out of its vertically integrated factory in China—making rejiggering its supply chain to offset China tariffs a lot more challenging. Not to mention costlier for loyal customers.

“The last thing that we want to do right now in this economy is raise our prices, but … you can’t run a company negatively. At least we can’t as a small business that’s privately owned without having some equity from outside,” said Deirdre Quinn, Lafayette 148 co-founder and CEO in a
Retail Rx fireside chat video with Ian Fredericks, president and CEO of Hilco Consumer-Retail.

“You can buy cheaper fabric and hope that the customer doesn’t notice. But that’s not the direction I want to take,” she said, noting the company’s commitment to Italian fabrics and meticulous craftsmanship. “[The pressure to cut back on quality] also happened during COVID, [but] I don’t believe in going downstream.”

While Lafayette 148’s 20 stores in China and e-commerce business could be seen as a hedge against an American consumer who might pull back, one problem remains for the global brand: pricing. “A complication that’s going on right now is, ‘How do you price items?’ You used to do this global pricing, but it’s not fair that the rest of the world is paying the retail price that I have to pass on in America [due to tariffs].”
