Isobel Marion Dorothea Mackellar, writer, was born in Sydney, New South Wales, to Sir Charles Kinnaird Mackellar, physician, and his wife Marion, daughter of Thomas Buckland. Core of my heart was written in about 1904, appearing in several publications before being included as My country in her first book, The closed door, and other verses (Melbourne, 1911). Three further volumes of verse were published in 1914, 1923 and 1926. Mackellar also published three novels between 1912 and 1914, but wrote little after the death of her father in 1926.
