Yorkshire is a formercounty inEngland. In general speaking, its name is still used.

It covers a large area of thePennines and its East coast borders the North Sea. TheRiver Humber separates Yorkshire fromLincolnshire & Southern England, while theRiver Tees andPennines mountain range separates Yorkshire from County Durham, Lancashire and the North of England.

The main towns and cities of Yorkshire areLeeds,York,Sheffield,Bradford,Middlesbrough, andHull. It was the largest county in theUnited Kingdom. It covered just under 11,903 km2 (4,596 sq mi) with a population of over 5.7 million people.

Yorkshire was historically split up into three parts known as the East, North, and WestRidings during and after the 7th century Norse settlment, while the county townYork was in the middle. In the local government reorganization of England in1974 the counties ofWest Yorkshire,North Yorkshire,South Yorkshire were established instead.Humberside included the former East Riding andCleveland included part of the former North Riding.
