Wismar (Low German:Wismer) is a town in northernGermany. It is on theBaltic Sea, in the state ofMecklenburg-Western Pomerania. It is about 45 kilometres (28 miles) east ofLübeck, and 30 kilometres (19 miles) north ofSchwerin. It has a university and a harbor.

Till September 4, 2011, Wismar was anurban district.
