Avoivodeship, also spelledvoivodship,voivodina orvojvodina[1] (Romanian:voievodat,Polish:województwo,Serbian:vojvodina (војводина),vojvodstvo (војводство) orvojvodovina (војводовина),Hungarian:vajdaság,Lithuanian:vaivadija,LatinPalatinatus in Poland), is ageographicaladministrative division dating to medievalRomania,Hungary,Poland,Lithuania,Latvia,Russia andSerbia (seeVojvodina), ruled by avoivod (voivode,wojewoda). The voivod (literal translation: "the one who leads the warriors", is the same as to Dux Exercituum / Herzog) was originally the military commander next to the ruler.
