Tufa

Tufa columns atMono Lake,California.

Tufa is aporous variety oflimestone. It is formed by theprecipitation ofcarbonateminerals from water at normal temperatures.

Geothermally heatedhot springs sometimes produce similar (but less porous) carbonate deposits known astravertine.

Do not confuse with the rock made ofvolcanic ash, which is calledtuff.
