Tuesday is the day of the week betweenMonday andWednesday. In some countries, for example theUnited States of America, Tuesday is the third day of theweek. In other parts of the world, Tuesday is the second day of the week.

History of the name

The nameTuesday comes from aMiddle English word,Tiwesday. This word came from theOld English wordTiwes dæg. This was named after theNordic godTyr. Tyr was the God of War, like the Roman war godMars, and Greek godAres.[1]

InLatin,Tuesday is calledMartis dies which means "Mars's Day". In French, Spanish, Italian and Romanian, the (Romance languages), the word for "Tuesday" is nearly the same as the Latin name. Tuesday ismardi inFrench,martes inSpanish,martedì inItalian,dimarts inCatalan, andmarţi inRomanian.

The Celtic languages still spoken use the Latin names,[2] even though none of these languages came from Latin. Tuesday isdé máirt inIrish,Meurzh inBreton,[3]dydd Mawrth inWelsh[4] andDimàirt inScottish Gaelic.[5][6][7]
