The Treaty of Tordesillas

Atreaty is a writtenagreement between two or more parties, which may becountries or other important groups, about any subject. Treaties usually settle or avoiddisputes.

Countries may agree to end awar or to declare war on a commonenemy by promising to come to the aid of another country if it is attacked. They may allow allow each other'scitizens or merchandise to crossborders freely, such as theEuropean Union, which is the result of treaties between most countries inEurope.

In general, treaties are usually used to settledisputes, or to avoid disputes.
