Transylvania is a historical region inCentral Europe. In the past, it was administered byHungary, as an independentprincipality, belonging to theOttoman Empire, and a province ofAustria-Hungary. It has been part ofRomania since the end ofWorld War I in 1918.

The borders was made up by theSiret River from east, riverTisza from west of north and south by theCarpathian Mountains.

Transylvania's main city,Cluj-Napoca, is seen as the region's informal capital. But Transylvania was also ruled fromAlba Iulia during its dependence from the Ottoman Empire, and the seat of theTransylvanian Diet was moved toSibiu for some time in the 19th century.

In popular culture, Transylvania is mainly known as the seat (and origin) ofCount Dracula. Thisvampire story byBram Stoker is based on a local noblemanVlad III the Impaler, known for his cruelty. It also was the home ofElizabeth Báthory.
