Tracheotomy andtracheostomy is asurgery on theneck to open a direct path by cutting a hole in thetrachea (windpipe). They are performed byparamedics,veterinarians, emergencyphysicians, andsurgeons. Both surgical and percutaneous techniques are now widely used.
Tracheostomy was written about inancient Egyptian tablets,[1] but, in the 12th century, Ibn Zuhr described the first correct tracheotomy operation for people who weresuffocating (could not breathe).[2] The current tracheostomy was described in 1909 by Chevalier Jackson, an American doctor.
