Top quark

From Simple English Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Aproton and an antiproton smashing into each other produce a top quark and a topantiquark, which then quickly decay into more things.

Top quarks ortruth quarks are the heaviest knownelementary particles (particles that are so small that they can not be divided). Allquarks are elementary particles, and since they arefermions (which means that no two of them can exist in the same place at the same time), they have aspin of 1/2. Top quarksinteract with all four of thefundamental forces, which aregravity, electromagnetism, strong force, andweak force. Almost all of the time, top quarks will decay into abottom quark and aW boson, although it can sometimes decay into astrange quark.

One top quark weighs about as much as oneatom oftungsten. Since top quarks are somassive, scientists have been able to make predictions about themass of theHiggs Boson, the only type ofboson with anintrinsic spin of 0 (scalar boson). Unfortunately, top quarks are only believed to be able to exist for 5x10–25 seconds.
