Thiol

From Simple English Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
General formula for a thiol

Athiol is amolecule that has a R–SHgroup. Thiols are likealcohols with anoxygen atom changed with asulfur one. They have often a very strong and bad smell. Thiols are added tonatural gas so that people can smell it. This is becausemethane does not have a smell but can explode very easily.

Thiols are very easy tooxidize. They are also quiteacidic, more than alcohols. When the proton is taken away by abase, the thiol can become anucleophile. It can do reactions likenucleophilic substitution.

One of the naturalamino acids, cysteine, has a thiol in its structure.
