Thebes is a city in CentralGreece in Boeotia. Today, about 23,000 people live there. It lies on the border ofBoeotia andAttica.Archaeologists have found aMycenaean settlement. They have also foundclay tablets written inLinear B script. Thebes was once a super-power in Greece until the rise ofMacedonia. It became a dominant power after their victory over theSpartans at theBattle of Leuctra in 371 BC.
