Thuringia (German:Thüringen) is aBundesland ofGermany. It lies in central Germany and has an area of 16,251 km2 (6,274.5 sq mi). This means Thuringia is the sixth smallest state in Germany byarea. It has 2.1 million inhabitants,[1] so it is the fifth smallest state in Germany bypopulation. Thecapital isErfurt.

History

1920 theGrand Duchy ofSaxe-Weimar, theDuchies ofSaxe-Meiningen,Saxe-Altenburg and Saxe-Gotha (part ofSaxe-Coburg and Gotha) and thePrincipalities ofSchwarzburg-Sondershausen,Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt,Greiz andGera united to make theFree State of Thuringia.
1949 Thuringia andErfurt became a new state of theDDR
1952 It became divided in three DistrictsBezirke (Erfurt,Gera andSuhl)
1990Thuringia became aBundesland in the reunited Germany.

Geography

Thuringia borders on the German states ofLower Saxony,Saxony-Anhalt,Saxony,Bavaria andHesse.The most conspicuous geographical feature of Thuringia is theThuringia Forest (Thüringer Wald). In the northwest Thuringia includes a small part of theHarz mountains. TheSaale river runs throughJena.The biggest mountain in Thuringia is with 982m theGroßer Beerberg in theThuringia Forest.
