Technical drawing, also known asdrafting ordraughting, is the act anddiscipline of making detaileddrawings. These drawingsvisually communicate how something works or how it is to be made.

Technical drawing isessential for communicating ideas inindustry andengineering.[1]

To make drawings easier to understand, people use familiarsymbols. They use standardunits of measurement,notation systems, visual styles, andpage layouts. These drawingconventions areinternationally acceptedstandards. Technical drawings are auniversal way of communicating complexmechanicalconcepts. Technical drawing are very different from theexpressive drawing of thevisual arts. Artistic drawings may have many meanings. Technical drawings are understood to have one intended meaning.[2]

Technical drawings are used to makeelectronic parts as well asmechanical parts.[3] They are used incommercial andresidentialconstruction.Roads,bridges, andwastewater systems are just some of the things that need technical drawings. Almost anything that is manufactured requires technical drawings.[3]

Adrafter,draftsperson, ordraughtsman is a persontrained to make technical drawings. Aprofessional drafter who makes technical drawings is sometimes called adrafting technician. Professional draftspersons bridge the gap betweenengineers andmanufacturers. They contributeexperience and technicalexpertise to the design process.
