Tamil Eelam is a proposedstate forTamils inSri Lanka. It was one of the reasons for theSri Lankan Civil War. The main leader wasVelupillai Prabhakaran, the leader of theTamil Tigers.

Tamils number just over 11 percent of the Sri Lankan population. They live mostly in the coastal regions of north, east and west Sri Lanka. The dominantSinhalese people are just under 75% of the population.
