Sulfone

The structure of a sulfone.

Asulfone is amolecule that has asulfur atom withbonds to twooxygen atoms. The sulfur has twodouble bonds to the two oxygens. It has a single bond with the other two groups. They are usually made byoxidisingthioethers.

They are used in many importantchemical reactions. For example, theJulia olefination uses a sulfone to make analkene from analdehyde. They are also sometimes used assolvents.
